I was very definitely informed that I had to carry my passport at all times. I have never had to show it, I have a Thai driving licence which has always done the job, apart from when I visit immigration of course.
If you google 'carry passport ' you will find many references to the fact that you can be ARRESTED if the police officer doesn't like your face / thinks you have too much money.

Exactly Starman......Which is why when you renew your passport you only have to send a copy not the original with your application.This only happens to renewals from Thailand not any other country in the world!!

That is not what Nookie is talking about.

If you renew a British passport from Thailand you only need to send a copy of your existing passport with your application. That is because the Embassy understand that the law of Thailand states that you must have your passport with you at all times.

If you renew from Singapore, for example, you need to send the original passport.

Nothing about keeping the old one. In actual fact the British embassy return old passports with the corners cut off. In Thailand it is the passport holders responsibility to cut off the corners when the new passport has been received.

I renewed my pp in March in Chiang Mai at the US Consulate At no time was I with out. They did not take it. When I returned to pick up my new pp (6 days) they canceled my old one. A for a UK pp ALL UK pp holders in Thailand must now go to Bangkok  in person to apply for and return in person to pick up their new pp. They retain their original pp until they have their new pp.

However, I have over 50 years experience dealing with US and/or Foreign militaries.  If the checkpoint is ordered to verify foreign passports and restain those that do not have it, regardless of the law, rule, regulation, etc, you don't have a passport you will almost certainly be stopped.  Military are not police, they have different views, and during a coup it is not a good time to challange whether the military is violating the law.

So for the forseeable future I plan to carry my passport when traveling out of Buriram city.  A minor inconvience.

Each government will have advice but even with the full weight of ThaiVisa, nobody can come up with evidence if there is such a Thai law.

I carry a laminated credit card size copy of my passport, plus always have at least 3 driving licences/Thai tax card at hand but like already suggested, its the luck of the draw who you happen to meet. I think if I were going away from home for a couple of days, I'd take my passport to ease possible problems with the Army in this current time.

There are laws here of course, but the beauty here is that you can always pay your way out of minor infractions,it's not the end of the world.

You have to go to Bangkok to renew your passport now.. sending copies is not the way nomore... you turn up in person show your old passport then your allowed to keep the old one til the other arrives... Its all done back in the UK now.. so nomore Hong Kong, singapore or wherever.. Total x up thats why they have a massive backlog..

you dont have to go in person to pick it up.. You can nominate anybody to pick it up for you with a signed Declaration and ID from them..
