BEREAVEMENT BENEFITS IN THAILAND

The Pensions Act 2014 became law on 14th May 2015, when it received the Royal Assent. It comes into force on 6th April 2016

With effect 6th April 2016, Thai Widows, living in Thailand, will not be eligible for any benefits under new laws which are known as Bereavement support payment.  To be eligible to receive benefits (formerly known as bereavement benefits).....

(1) A person is entitled to a benefit called bereavement support payment if—

the person is ordinarily resident in Great Britain, or a specified territory, when the spouse or civil partner dies,

Thailand, unfortunately is NOT a specified territory.

CoCo ........does this refer to state pensions only or does it affect private pensions also. Obviously I will check out with my pension company but currently my wife will recieve a spouse pension upon my death.

This just relates to Bereavement payments Freddy. It is all part of the pensions changes in 2016.

Occupational pensions are separate and there is no issue with a widows pension. Scheme rules vary, my wife would be entitled to 50% of my pension less 5% for the age difference being 19 years.

Cheers Co Co. It was a bit of a dumb question in hindsight.
Under my scheme I think she gets 100% for 5 years then reduces ( I think without checking) to 75%) till she passes , so not a bad scheme.

There is never a 'dumb question'................  you might get some dumb answers mhihi

We tend not to think about these things very often, but is nice to know that many Thai wives will be comfortably taken care of after we are gone.

Nice idea toffo but unfortunately the British embassy seem to inform the DWP and the pension payments cease immediately.

Does the IOM fall under DWP ?

We have had 3 cases this year where the state pension stopped immediately.

When a Foreigner dies, it's reported (by for example the Hospital) to his / her Embassy who then report this to the relevant authorities, so unfortunately your "trick" will not work.

Spot on.

For a death in hospital the embassy has to give consent for the body to be removed for cremation. ALL deaths in Thailand have to be reported to the police within 24 hours.

So the answers  are either,  get a private pension or don't die in Thailand otherwise your  money will go to some of the upstanding new British passport holders..
and not the family you have made and kindly and generously taken care of for all your years in Thailand..
go figure that logic, must be from the Zelous Hisos😠
Where did this info come from?
