Buying your own internet mast.
« on: March 20, 2013, 03:58:15 PM »

Have finally had enough of my slower than slow air card internet access out here in the sticks, and went to see TOT this morning to get a price for buying my own mast to receive wi fi internet.
Was quoted 40,000 bht for fitting the mast and 590 bht per month for 50hrs service @ 10Mbps
One week up and running.
Also went to see CAT who were not so interested, but sent me to see a private guy who i believe owns a computer shop somewhere near Tweekit. He quoted the same price for the mast, but asked 845 bht
for the same speed, but with unlimited access. One year contract, up and running in 7 days.

Anyone had any experience with either company or service?

I used to use a dish from a company called CS Loxinfo, was paying 3000baht per month (not sure what the speed was supposed to be). But it was shite!!

Over the 3 years I had it the speed got slower and slower, no after sales service (well this is Thailand) and after I told them to get rid, they tried to charge me extra (which I did not pay, I just told them to come and get the dish before I throw it away).

In December I bought a dongle from TrueVisions in Surin and it works a treat, pretty quick and good working video on Skype - make of the dongle is HUAWEI. Very happy with this redman

I use that too. The speed is good and initial setup costs are cheap. The problem is the 5gb data per month limit.

Not sure of what your guys are speaking of.. a 15m mast? Are we talking about a Wi-Fi repeater with antennas?  The last time I was in Pon's village the only thing I saw was the old style satellite dishes. I didn't see any Wi-Fi masts, at least not on individual residences.. Please tell me more Nookie and what kind of speed do you get out it?  Right now I'm in hog heaven over here in Florida.  I've got unlimited 25/25mb receive and transmit over a fiber optic cable.  15m mast?  Man that's a 50 ft tower if I'm hearing you correctly.. I'm just really interested where I can get the best bang for my buck out there in the sticks?

25/25mb - you are in for a shock Voodoo.

In the boonies the options are limited. Nookie subcontracts a signal - getting your own may well prove difficult/nigh on impossible/not economically viable.

I am currently exploring sharing a relatives signal from 4km away (they are one of six people who shared the cost of a 20k+ installation and 6,000 Baht per month).

I am told it will cost 5,000 Baht for a booster + whatever I negotiate for the monthly fee.

You will recognise that I have no security of tenure - if we ever fall out with the relative he could cut off the signal.

Best I can do.

My speed test:

Ping 437ms
Upload speed 0.06 Mbps
Download      0.08 Mbps

Impressive Huh ?
