Hummingbirds
« on: March 21, 2011, 08:10:43 AM »
This is specifically for Isanbirder and TBWG

We have what would appear to be a Hummingbird nest in the garden, The parent birds resemble pictures on the internet

Three chicks which are constantly fed by the 2 parents . However it would seem that Thailand does not have Hummingbirds.

Any ideas what these might be, The nest is like an elongated tube suspended from a branch in an orange tree.

More blue on the head of the one we think is the male. The female is rather plain

I get a couple of maroon red birds very small with very long beaks in the garden,,,,The colour reminds me of the male bullfinch

Exactly the same Boloa except that it does not have a purple throat. the female is identical to photos of the female sunbird

Obviously a sunbird. I will check his undercarriage further!

The first picture is a Purple Sunbird (I don't think there is a Purple-throated... but the English names tend to change a bit), and the second an Olive-backed.  Both are common here, Olive-backed perhaps more likely in a garden.  In Chiangmai I had an Olive-backed nest just outside my front door, so that I disturbed it every time I went out... and apparently it likes this kind of situation !  This morning I was watching a Purple feeding its young in the nest.  Females, by the way, are very similar, olive above and yellow below;  the Olive-backed is a brighter yellow.

I think we probably have an Olive backed Sunbird. Three chicks a week old. Nesting outside the back door.

Thanks to all who contributed.
