Buri Ram (Thai: บุรีรัมย์ - "City of Happiness").

Not quite sure what the name Buriram really means?

I believe it use to be called Muang Pae, but that was awhile ago.

Probably way off track here..... but "BURI' is often used as a word when tobacco is involved.

That sounds obviously and prosaically right.  Certainly the Thai -buri is used as a suffix in many placenames (Lopburi, Inburi, Wichianburi etc).  My question was actually prompted by a sign outside Ramkhamhaeng University Campus which says, if I remember correctly, "in honour of King Buriram".  Romantic but wrong?  I'll check the wording again next time I go past.

Indeed the meaning of Buriram is The City/Town of Happiness. Buri is the part that means City/Town and Ram is the Happy bit.

The word Buri meaning cigarette would actually be spelt Buhri.

Hope this helps

You're thinking English, not Thai.  The English letters 'ram' can represent several different Thai words, not just the one you quote.

Yes indeed. This is one of the reasons that I decided to learn how to read and write Thai.

รัมย์ = ram = Happy

รำ = ram = by product of rice.Or Thai dancing. This word is very unusual as there are 2 meanings but only one spelling and one pronunciation.

ราม = ram = a hero in classical Thai literature.

บุรี = buri = town/city

บุหรี่ = buhri = cigarette

Hope this helps.

I started this thread after seeing the stone sign outside Ramkhamhaeng University Campus.  I went past it again today;  the exact wording is
REGIONAL CAMPUS IN HONOUR HIS MAJESTY KING BUREERUM

The strange spelling is just an alternative transliteration.  What I think has happened is that the sign has got garbled in the translation, and should read/mean
"Buriram Regional Campus in Honour of His Majesty the King"

I don't really think "King Bureerum" is even a fantasy, just a mistake in the translation.
