Lamp oil!
« on: November 21, 2021, 07:43:54 AM »
Yeah I need lamp oil (petroleum oil) as my sole source has retired and gone back to Chang Mai.
I use it for sharpening tools and never found a better substitute. If anyone notices a place that sells it, or sells hrricane lamps that need lamp oil, please drop a quick hint!
Thanks.

Are you talking about a kind of honing oil?

I looked in many places for some. Spoke to a couple of locals and they suggested using a light cooking oil. Coconut is very good but failing that I just use vegetable oil.

Thanks. Nah, olive oil etc, tried 'em all. Only WD50 comes anywhere near but isn't the same.

Up to you, as the locals say. :(

Personally, I find the cheapest brand of cooking oil to be effective. I use the cheapest as it's less refined.

Our village sharpener guy uses it too. Villagers seem to be happy with the results.

Maybe you should give it another go. A small bottle is not more than a few baht.

Thanks. I'm pretty sure this wasn't on Lazada a few months ago when I looked, but more fool me, there it is!

LAZADA ???

I guess it depends on your standards. I tried all kinds of cooking oils, they do work up to a point but I want an axe you can shace your arm with. Thanks anyway.

I like my tools very sharp. You ask about standards, I can't stand using any cutting tools that won't perform like a knife through butter.

Most "vegetable oils" in UK now are 100% Rapeseed oil. This gives exceptional results.
