Top Google search terms by Thai users
Bangkok Post: 10 Dec 2010
What gets Thailand googling?

The red shirt rallies, a Korean boy band and a country song about a prodigal son top the list of Google searches by Thai users over the past 12 months.

The world's leading search engine announced its Global Search Terms of 2010 yesterday, showing Thai users keyed in predictably popular terms as well as some surprising ones.

The tallies of the searched words have been divided into several categories.

In the news section, the term satanakarn sua daeng (red shirt situation) tops the list, followed by khao nam tuam (news about floods) and "Ja Pien", referring to Col Sompien Eksomya, the policeman whose murder in Yala in March triggered a wave of sympathy across the country.

Coming in fourth is yoob pak prachatipat (disbanding the Democrats) while "Seh Daeng", the nickname of Maj Gen Khattiya Sawasdipol - the outspoken soldier shot dead on May 13 during the red shirt rally - places fifth.

Ranked sixth is "Arisman nee", translated as Arisman flees, which refers to the incident when red shirt leader Arisman Pongruengrong made headlines when he was lowered by supporters from a hotel room to the ground below as police tried to arrest him.

In the celebrity section, the top search was for CN Blue, a Korean boy band. Second is Zee, a Thai singer sporting a Korean look, while I Love Kamikaze, a Thai girl band, comes in third.

Rungnapa "Annie" Brook, a Thai star embroiled in a bitter scandal with her superstar boyfriend, Rattapoom "Film" Tokongsap, came in fifth after Canadian sensation Justin Bieber.

The fastest-rising search term is Pleng Look Tevada, a bouncy northeastern song by Sanook Singmart.
