Maybe something like this would be more in keeping.

I also have the TOT microwave receiver mast which was originally installed in our village of Ban Wa on highway 226 between Krasang and Nong Daeng - we were getting our signal from the tower at Nong Daeng about 4km away.  Cost was 22k all inclusive and monthly cost just under 700.  The metal mast was on top of the concrete pole to get maximum effect.  Have just moved the mast to a house on the northeast outskirts of Mueang Buriram - 4,000 to move and re-install.  A neighbour has the same setup and his metal pole is at the top of his concrete pole; however, when they put mine in here the metal pole is level with the concrete pole - works well and same as at Ban Wa so no problem. I assume I get signal from the city TOT office which is only a few km away. My understanding is that there is only one package available so no choices on speed.  I am not overly IT literate but the three checks I did at Ban Wa on download speed showed 9.96, 9.83 and 9.24.  In general usage it seems variable when downloading large items depending on time of day but no real problem streaming sports, etc.  A friend in Surin province halfway between Krasang and Prasat swears by the pocket wifi setup.  At the time of installation the TOT option was the only one available to me outside of the main town areas.

Lindsay, good one but you mention that a friend prefers pocket wifi, IMO that is a 3G SIM in a MiFi and thats not comparable to WiNet as that is quite expensive if you use large amounts of data.

I use on average 60 GB of data a month, which is mostly consumed by using IPTV.

If I would use 3G I would have to spend approx 699 x 20 = +/- 13.000 THB per month (explanation 3GB Data with a Ais 12call Sim will cost approx 699 THB).  With WiNet I only have to pay 700 and I can use as much data as I want. I know people who are using close to 200 GB of data a month

Edit: Added link to Ais 12 call 3G data package prices

Congrats,

Just make sure when they come and install it that they Setup the wifi in the Tp-Link with your desired Wireless name and password and please select as Wireless security WPA or WPA2 and NOT WEP.

Sure it will work out. Total install work (including running the  CAT 5E cable into the house) was approx 2 - 2.5 hours tops.

Forgot my laptop at the rental to do speed tests, but I just did a Firewall check via Gibson Research grc.com site and come to the conclusion that the network isn't completely closed from the Wan side.

The firewall check finds all ports closed, but port 80 which is for Internet access via Browser (so your configuration) is Wide open.

I have been searching high and low for the password to disable this in the Admin side of the WiNet box, but I can't find that password to access the settings. TOT left me only with a standard user id password but that only allows me to watch the status of the Winet connection. :(

Re: Viruses, it could be, as your Winet box is open for access from the Internet (which is generally never a good thing), however it doesn't mean that people can access your wireless as I posted earlier set a strong password for Wireless and as Security for wireless WPA or WPA2 and NOT WEP (which is easy to hack)

If you wanna test it for yourself goto Google and type in grc.com and in the search results that appear click Shields Up, the page that appears then should be self explanatory but if you get stuck just shout.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shields_Up

Good tests to do there is common ports which in an ideal situation should say "Stealth", but in my case it said "Failed" with Port 80 HTTP open.

Question for all members who have TOT WiNet installed.

Do you have the Admin Password for the TOT supplied WiNet box which sits on top of the tower ? If so, care to share that with me via Pm ?

Note: I am NOT looking for the xxxxfxxx@ with totwinet pwd as that is only User access, and I am also NOT looking for the PWD for the TP-Link that TOT supplied (which is usually admin with password tot).

Thanks in advance.
