Tabien Rot ... car passport
« on: October 23, 2008, 09:04:19 PM »

I was under the impression that once an International travel permit ( Tabien Rot) is issued it is valid for the life of the vehicle.

However looking at my document it shows the period of validity as 17/12/07 - 13/11/08 there is a position to extend the period within the permit so I suppose I have answered my own question but there is only 1 option to extend and the original period is odd and I just can't see the logic.

Any ideas?

I have been hearing a car passport is needed to drive in Cambodia and Laos.

Where is this "passport" obtained?   What are the requirements?

Go to the local registration centre. On the way to Prakonchai past the Imobile stadium. They will issue one.

The car must be fully paid for and not on credit. Not sure of all documents but car reg, house book and ID of registered owner is a must.

Laos is easier to get into but be sure to up your insurance cover. You do need to buy Laos insurance at the checkpoint into Laos but it does not offer much cover.

Getting into Cambodia, so I have been told, is much more difficult

When I went to the local Buriram transport office they could not issue a car passport, although that was a few years ago.

I believe that only provinces that border another country are allowed to issue them.  I have obtained a couple in Nong Khai and also Ubon Ratchathani. The Nong Khai office is only a couple of kms from friendship bridge. But Ubon office is 80kms from border as I found to my cost!

They are issued at the LTD in Surin and are not needed for Cambodia only Lao, Malaysia and Myanmar. Also driving a personal vehicle into Cambodia at the Chong Chom crossing if the vehicle is in your in your name is a piece of cake. Only problem is Cambodia will not insure a Thai registered vehicle and your Thai insurance is nfg in Cambodia. As for the vehicle passport they are only good for  one year and must be renewed every year.
