F1 champs to put on special show

Rajdamnoen Avenue will be closed on December 18 to make way for a show from the Red Bull team - this year's winners of the Formula 1 World Championships - to mark His Majesty's 83rd birthday. The event will be held at 2pm.

Metropolitan Police Area 6 deputy chief Pol Colonel Wallop Prathummuang said the avenue would be blocked from the Phan Fa intersection to the Khok Wua intersection for an hour and a half.

Chalerm Yoovidhya, chairman of Red Bull in the UK, said the team had already wowed fans in important cities across the globe.

Mark Webber, a famous Australian F1 champion, and Sak "Kiki" Nana will be joining the Red Bull Drift Team Thailand for the Rajdamnoen show.

Bangkok gears up for F1 Red Bull show
Bangkok Post: 11 Dec 2010
Bangkok gears up for F1 show

Ratchadamnoen Klang Avenue will be closed next Saturday - not for planned demonstrations by the red or yellow shirts, but for an exhibition of Formula One driving.

Although only a show for F1 world champion team Red Bull Racing, co-organiser Bangkok Metropolitan Administration is confident it will be an adrenaline-pumping event for motor sports fans.

The event, the first of its kind in the capital, will give Bangkokians the chance of a glimpse of an expensive race car in their own city, said Deputy Bangkok Governor Taya Teepsuwan.

The idea of turning Ratchadamnoen Avenue into a race track is not new. Prince Birabongse Bhanudej Bhanuban - better known as Prince Bira - planned to close roads in the Sanam Luang and Ratchadamnoen area in 1939 for a "Bangkok Grand Prix".

But Prince Bira's dream was dashed when World War II broke out.

Saturday's show is part of City Hall's efforts to help realise the late Prince Bira's dream, Ms Taya said.

More than 10,000 people are expected to book their places along the sides of Ratchadamnoen Klang Avenue to see Red Bull racer Mark Webber drive his RB26 car on the 107-year-old road.

The three-lap course will get under way at Phan Fa Bridge, pass Democracy Monument and circle at Khok Wua intersection where the race will also finish.

Red Bull Beverage Co executive Chalerm Yoovidhya told a news conference last week the event was aimed at celebrating His Majesty the King's 83rd birthday and also to commemorate Prince Bira.

"Red Bull cars have been on show in several places and cities around the world - from a frozen lake in Canada to a beach in the Dominican Republic," he said.

"It's time for another special show on the historic street of Ratchadamnoen."

Ratchadamnoen Klang Avenue will be closed from 2pm to 3.30pm with a considerable number of security officers at the event.

Motorsport enthusiasts welcome the event and say they will not miss it. But some wonder if the road is good enough for an F1 car and others see the course as being too short.

"Mark [Webber] and his car are in top form, but the road surface is not. The poor road conditions could spoil the show," said one message posted on the http://www.aeracingclub.net webboard.

Ms Taya admitted the exhibition was a publicity event for Red Bull Racing and the City Hall but it was not without a cause.

"What Bangkok will definitely get from the Formula One show is a good image," Ms Taya said. Ms Taya also hopes that the exhibition will lead to larger-scale car racing in Bangkok although Thailand is a long way from holding F1 races like the events in Singapore and Malaysia.

"This is just the first step. We will see if the people like the idea or not."

HM greets F1 Star Webber ahead of event
By Onravee Tangmeesang
The Nation 2010-12-18

Mark Webber may have spent much of his life in the fast lane, but time must have stood still for a while yesterday for the Formula One racer.

"Good luck for next year," His Majesty the King, making yet another rare public appearance, told Webber as the monarch came down from his hospital room to view the Red Bull Racing team's Formula One car on display at Siriraj Hospital.

The Australian also presented to the King a model F1 car.

Chalerm Yoovidhya, chairman of Red Bull Company in London, revealed that the King showed keen interest while viewing the car.

"We learned that HM the King has interest in Formula One racing. So we asked for permission to bring the car for him to view at close quarters.

"He asked about the competition and wanted to know the power of the car's engine," Chalerm said.

Webber will drive the car along Rajdamnoen Avenue this afternoon in the "Street of Kings Rajdamnoen Red Bull Bangkok 2010" show, which is expected to draw huge crowds.

HRH Princess Chulabhorn Valayalaksana will preside over the event. Red Bull and the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) jointly organised it.

The event will comprise three parts.

The first part will be a parade of jazz music in honour of the beloved monarch, who himself has musical talent. Renowned jazz musician Sekpol Ounsamran, widely known as Mr Saxman, will lead the parade.

The second part features the Red Bull Best Wishes to the King. In this part are heartthrobs "Dome" Pakorn Lam and Ananda Everingham.

The third part includes a show run by Webber and Red Bull Drift Team Thailand. Actresses Patcharapa Chaichua and Sherman Boonyasak will be in the show too.

Having touched down in the capital early yesterday, Webber, along with Red Bull team officials, began the day by visiting Siriraj Hospital to sign a well-wishing book to HM the King. The presence of the Australian driver, who finished in the third spot in the recent World Driver's Championship season, attracted huge interest at the hospital, with fans scrambling for his photo and signature. Webber's team-mate Sebastian Vettel won the championship, while Red Bull itself won the Constructor's Championship.

The Red Bull team then returned to the Dusit Thani Hotel for a welcome lunch hosted by Bangkok Governor MR Sukhumbhand Paribatra. At the table, they were joined by Chalerm and Saravoot Yoovidhya, managing director of Red Bull Beverage.

Webber, 34, spoke of his pleasure at taking part in the event when the country was still celebrating of the King's birthday.

"It was a pleasure for me to be here and an exciting opportunity for myself and the team. I appreciate the work of everyone involved in making the historic event happen.

"I'm very excited about driving the car on the streets here tomorrow and would like to invite everyone to have a look."

The Street of Kings Rajdamnoen Red Bull Bangkok 2010 event is held to celebrate HM the King's birthday as well as to enhance Bangkok's image, showing people around the world that Thailand has returned to being a peaceful country.

With Bangkok hit by unseasonable rains during the week, the Australian dismissed the concern that the weather might ruin the event by confirming that the car was tuned to run under any condition. There was more good news for local fans after the organisers decided to increase the number of laps Webber would drive the car from two to four.

People can enjoy the show free of charge.

"The show run will stretch along Rajdamnoen Avenue to the Democracy Monument," Sukhumbhand said.

He believes the show will bolster Bangkok's image and boost the city's tourism.

Metropolitan Police deputy commissioner Maj-General Panu Kerdlarpphon yesterday said many roads would be closed to traffic for the event between 1.30pm and 3.30pm.

He also urged people to use public transport if they wanted to see the show because parking space was very limited.

Metropolitan Police Division 6 deputy commander Colonel Wanlop Prathummuang said more than 100 policemen would be deployed to facilitate traffic flow and ensure safety at the event.

Webber demonstrates car for Thai King

   Sunday, December 19th 2010, 10:39 GMT

Mark Webber, Red Bull demo in ThailandMark Webber demonstrated Red Bull's Formula 1 showcar in front of a crowd in 150,000 in Thai capital Bangkok yesterday as part of the Thai King's 84th birthday celebrations.

Webber, who had met King Bhumibol Adulyadej on Friday, demonstrated the car on the city's Rajdamnoen Avenue. The crowd was the largest so far for one of Red Bull's showcar events.

The team's programme of street demonstrations this year has already seen its car running in Dubai, Poland, Lithuania, the Dominican Republic, Colombia and Northern Ireland, as well as more traditional F1 nations such as Britain, Italy, Australia and Germany.
