Title: Sense of humour absent on BE
Post by: Adam on January 26, 2017, 04:44:41 PM
Who is editing shouts in the shoutbox?

What was wrong with my comments

1 Venus Williams into the Aussie Open Final - The Donald Trump making America great again.
2 Now Serena joins her sister in the final President The Donald Trump - Making America Great Again

The making America great again was deleted by someone other than myself.

How is that offensive in any way?

It is a joke, it is English sarcasm. I am relating the success of the Williams sisters to Trumps election. No need for it to be deleted.

IT IS A JOKE, maybe not hilariously funny, but a joke none the less.

Adam ... both of your Shoutbox references to "Make America Great Again" are still there and visible on my BE Shoutbox ?

What are you smoking ... and where can I get some ?  redman

In Adam's defense, a lot of things have been disappearing.  Such as:

-Global Warming Thread
-  Funny Photo Thread
- I started a thread on a Bangkok Delivery food service last week, gone without a trace or explanation
-  My shout comment with a link for Nookie to buy a Master Baiter shirt.

The current term being used in the US is Snowflakes, guess we cannot upset them.

We have a report system. Posts get reported. we check it and decide.

We explain already that funny photos deleted was a mistake.

Global warning I'm not sure. Will look. I do remember that many posts were not on topic.

You may have hit the nail on the head Adan when you identified the fact that it might actually have to be funny to qualify....................

(Note...... more British sarcasm)

At least BE isn't adding Ad-blocker detection with a 30 second timeout to it's system

Mod,

Have you deleted posts and not told the poster?

Furthermore, have you deleted threads and not told the initiator?

The shouts are back now in full.

But both were missing Making America Great Again from the shout.

1 Venus Williams into the Aussie Open Final - The Donald Trump making America great again.
2 Now Serena joins her sister in the final President The Donald Trump - Making America Great Again

The rest of the shout was there.

If the whole of the comment was missing, or a random part of one, but the same phrase from two separate comments. It just seems odd to me.

Whatever, they will vanish in a day or so anyway.

It seems that Mod will delete posts he deems offensive.

Please read my post. There is report button. We deleted what is reported. It is not about what we think. We are not English first language speakers. We listen to members.

It is not about us and whats we don't like.

Please read everything before say something bad about us.

Thank you.

So if I decide I don't like something and report it, it gets deleted? A minimum of three reports, I should have thought, as well as a message/warning to the poster would be in order?
We do appreciate your work, Admin, we wouldn't be using the forum if we didn't.

As Davu says, more than one report should be required before deciding something is offensive or inappropriate.
It's probably the same person reporting every time.
Perhaps he'd like to own up and state what his problem is. (it's doubtful)

I have to agree with NongKi Bloke and Davu. This is a public forum, and pretty much every topic has posts that are likely to upset someone with a different viewpoint.

So Mod is telling us that if one person doesn't like a post for whatever reason .... it gets deleted ?

Sorry Mod ... that's rubbish.

There are lots of posts and several topics that give me the utter heebie-jeebies, but I don't rush to the Report Button ... I just move on. They are simply members voicing their opinions.

We all acknowledge that a Moderator is essential, but you can't open the door for some grumpy members that hate the world in general, or a spammer, to report everything they don't like.

(Mod ... as English is not your first language, you may have to Google heebie-jeebies)

A Moderator whose first language is English would be a huge plus; American English = even better.

Would American-English actually help in understanding humour?

Sorry. Maybe my English is not good.

I try to say that we do not delete posts that are not reported. Not that if one person reports we delete.

Also the start of this was Adam say about shout box. Admins cannot edit shouts. Only.delete. No change on shout box yesterday.

American - English would be helpful in attempting to understand Brit English.  My humor is about as dry as anyone here; understanding what a Brit thinks is humor is not a problem for me.  Understanding what they think is funny . . . . will save that for a different day.

I love English humour, it is witty and a great play on English words.  I find US humour more child like similar to slapstick and not really funny at all.  Australians love English humour.

The weakness in the system is, I am sorry to say, having it run by a non-native speaker.  (No criticism of Mod;  she is doing her best.)  It is not, and should never be, the number of reports that counts;  it's what they complain about.

And surely Mod could enlist the help of a native speaker when in doubt.  There's a good telephone service.

I am sure you do, Mod (a thankless task), but somehow a lot of spam gets through.  How?

Of every action a Mod does???

Just a thought?

Yesterday I wrote (can't remember exact wording)

'Agree, I also don't report posts. If I don't like something, I just ignore it. Life's to short'

This is just an opinion on a subject being discussed. I accept opinions differ however I fail to understand how my comment would warrant removal ??

So if your post is deleted with no explanation or notice that is fine with you?   I was talking about my specific post.  Plus it is obvious from Freddy's post that this happened to others.

But I do agree that if Mod deleted your post I probably would not be interested in an explanation.

Agree. I don't expect public explanation of another members post is removed however it would be nice to understand the reason if one of mine is removed. Just common courtesy.

I confirm now that no posts have been removed yesterday and today.

There are some members have problem posting. When you post you can enter again and check the post is there. Some people say their post is added but it is not.

Sorry, I've been out of touch, but I would never call Nookie a spammer.  He's been helpful to me on more than one occasion.  But all these people with dotty names are spammers, and are of much more harm than those who criticise a single post.
