I've checked it already and there are no signs saying TESCO will open branch in Buriram.
This rumours going on since BIG-C not opened yet.. (2 years ago).
The question is; Do we really need Tesco in Buriram? and what benefit this branch will give us,The Buriramians.. ;)
Everytime I pass in TESCO in KORAT (Nakhon Ratchasima) I find nothing intersting for me,not something I can't find in Buriram anyway.
I think "Big-C" and "Makro" are a big relief to our expat's life here concerning food issues, real "farang style" food and so on with wide vareity of products and lower margins of profits due to competition.
But I am not so familiar with the "Tesco" advantage over the others in this particular area.
Of course "Tesco" can bite some part of the market share of Big-C. confused5

Tesco Lotus plans expansion in Thailand
Bangkok Post: 19 Aug 2009
www.BangkokPost.com
Tesco Lotus hastens expansion in Thailand
Tesco Lotus, the UK hypermarket chain, will pour slightly more money into its expansion in the Thai market next year beyond the normal average investment of approximately 7 billion baht per year.
Steve Hammett, CEO of the local Tesco Lotus operator Ek-Chai Distribution System Co, said the company had had robust investment in Thailand for several years. At least six hypermarket outlets, more than 10 Talad Lotus stores and some Lotus Express outlets will be opened this year, bringing its total to about 600 outlets in all formats.
It is expected that the number of new outlets to be added next year will be a bit more than in 2009.
Tesco is present in 13 countries and the United States, India and China are the next big targets for the company's business expansion.
Ek-Chai Distribution System has tried to persuade Tesco to increase its investment in Thailand every year since inception.
"I don't see an economic recovery yet but it can't get any worse," said Mr Hammett.
The company will launch its Clubcard reward programme tomorrow. It tested the market with pilot programmes in Hat Yai and Ko Samui stores over the past few years and received good customer response.
Thailand is the seventh country in the world and the second in Southeast Asia where the Clubcard will be available. The company anticipates 4 million members in the first year. Shoppers earn Clubcard points that are converted into cash coupons four times a year.
Several retail operators such as Central Department Store, Tops Supermarket, Carrefour, Future Park Rangsit, M Card and recently The Mall Group also offer loyalty cards.
"It is more important to be the best, not the first," said Mr Hammett. "Compared to other competitors, nobody has a scheme like us: it is free to join, we offer cash coupons, there is no minimum requirement and you can redeem at all 62 stores nationwide."

I was talking to a mate of mine in the UK recently who knows someone that had something bought from a Tesco by someone else (I have all the contacts) and he said he heard from a distant cousin twice removed that Tesco Lotus might indeed build a branch in Buriram next year sometime with all their expansion plans. It all depends on the current economic situation and what the Baht will do against the Turkish Lira if the Zim dollar recovers to pre-unilateral-declaration-of-independance status on the back of the tobacco crop failing again next season.

At these stores, especially in the U.S., I avoid club cards like the plague. Color me paranoid if you like, but all of my health insurance questionnaires asked if I smoke. I do not. But I have had roommates and other friends who have asked me to pick them up a carton of cigarettes while shopping. With a club card I would have a record of having purchased cigarettes. If I were to contract lung cancer (I lived in Anchorage, AK and Los Angeles) an insurance company can throw that data right down my throat and deny treatment.
According to a marketing course I took at University of Alaska, the real purpose of club cards is to save money on snoopers hiding behind two way mirrors in stores to collect data on what people are buying. If you are diligent, you can save money with club cards. But I shopped in stores where lower income people shopped and found better savings. In Thailand, I shop at the big stores only for items I would not find in open markets. The canned dog food I buy at Big C in Pattaya, for example, is 52bt a can. At the dog grooming shop it is 40bt. Meat, eggs, fish, rice, most tubers and herbs are readily available at the local markets far cheaper than at the supermarket, and the shopping is far more fun. If I could find a good outlet for cheese, canned tuna, and Campbell dried soups outside the big markets, I would never go there again. Incidentally, I have done it in Pattaya and I hope it can be done in Buriram, I get my booze at the same outlets as the larger restaurants do at the same price with delivery for beer by the case.
My point is this: Club cards purport to be a means to saving money. When the consumer saves money, corporate profits are reduced. Yet club card markets keep the club card. So they must be making money with them.
In Anchorage Alaska, there is a large and very popular bar called "Chillicoot Charlie's." Over the entrance they have a sign that says: "We cheat the other fellow and pass the savings on to you." At club card retailers, I always feel like the other fellow.
-
Well the clubcard here can save significant amounts when used to purchase the 'Clubcard only Offers'

Chatting to a Thai lady in the market this morning who was sad at the prospect of her sales getting even worse with the imminent arrival of Tesco in Buriram. She has been told that they are planning to open a store on Route 2074 Buriram-Khu Muang road.

Hi Steve
A few years ago I wrote tongue in cheek to Sir Terry Leahy the then CEO of Tesco regarding a superstore in Buriram. Not expecting a reply I was pleasantly surprised when he wrote in person advising me that Philip Clarke would contact me about it as he was the director in charge of overseas development.
Well Philip Clarke did contact me and said that they were intending to open a store in Buriram, as nothing happened I assumed that this had been put on hold.
However, Philip Clarke is now head honcho at Tescos after Sir Terry's retirement and bearing in mind overseas is his forte plus has been bringing in substantially higher returns than Europe I forsee a Tesco Superstore in the not too distant future! crazydance

If Tesco Lotus do open in Buriram it is to be hoped that they have learnt from their lessons in Surin. The superstore there is an abomination. It opened some 6 months before Big C, yet was immediately surpassed by Big C. At the time there was no fresh food (i.e fish meat, vegetables) and no bakery or deli. Even now some years on, after trying to improve there is very limited fresh food, and the store is largely boycotted. Just last week there were only 4 booths selling cooked food in the cafeteria as against 10 when they opened - and that is mainly to the clearly underworked staff.
When the Surin Big C car park is full to overflowing it is hard to find 20 cars and pick ups at Tesco!
The 2074 is the wrong side of town for me so when it opens I'll stick to Big C and Makro.

You are quite right about the Surin Tesco. You would be hard pressed to ever find any milk or bread there. Some random products can be found in Tesco thats not available in BigC but generally as Nick says
,the place is not good. The only saviour seems to be that they open 4 1/2 hours earlier in the morning AND the clothes seem to be of European quality IMHO.
-
There is a cracking piece of land in Prakhonchai, on the 24 just 300 metres from the lights, on the left, heading towards Nang Rong.
A big plot that has housed a Tuesday night market and has variously been touted as a site for a 5 star hotel (LOL!), a Big C and a TESCO Lotus
A TESCO Lotus would fit on there a treat.

Dear members,
I have made some questioning in the area and these are my findings:
Tesco Lotus Store Buriram will be built road 218, just as you exit Buriram city toward Wat sawang arom,
You'll see the area just opposite the temple.
*See video of the area Tesco Lotus will be built on.
Tesco Lotus Express Buriram is planned to be on road 226, near the moat of Lamplaimat district.

Tesco after Carrefour outlets!
LONDON (SHARECAST) - Britain’s largest supermarket Tesco is one of ten bidders battling it out to win the Southeast Asian business of French supermarket chain Carrefour.
Up for grabs are 61 stores in Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand worth an estimated £650m.
Tesco already has a big operation in the region, mostly in South Korea, but also in China, Japan, Malaysia and Thailand, where the majority of Carrefour’s shops are.
Some of the world’s big name retailers are involved in the auction process, including Singapore-based Dairy Farm and Aeon of Japan, although Wal-Mart is thought to be sitting it out.
Carrefour is the second largest retailer on earth after the American behemoth. Tesco is third.
The UK firm reported “encouraging†first quarter growth in Asia of 15.4%, or 4.9% at constant exchange rates, despite political uncertainty in Thailand and Korea.
It made a trading profit there of £440m in the 12 months to February, 24% higher than the year before. Sales leapt 20% to over £9bn. Korea accounted for £4.5bn of sales and profits of nearly £300m.
“Our Asian markets offer a significant long-term opportunity,†the company said.

Here are some pictures from the area, TODAY, there are people mostly working on the ground and surface, not sure when they will really start the constructions of the place but I assume 1-3 months until they start to build it. The area is smaller than Big-C place.

H'mmm not a lot of progress to be seen! But in my experience there is not a lot to show whilst all the ground work is going on.
Once that is completed then structure tends to up very quickly, as happened with Big C and Mackro. Time will tell.

Tesco Lotus Express is a small store. The one that they are, maybe ,building in Muang Buriram is,as I understand, going to be a superstore. There is already an Express store in Lamplaimart.
I wouldn't get too excited. I went into the one in Pak Chong not so long ago. It is sooooooooooooo expensive.

Nothing wrong with Hooters, Nookie.

-
I have been told that the old site is now defunct. The land was cleared, by the owner, for inspection by Tesco. The owner is a very rich pig farmer. He decided to ask for alot more money than the land was worth. Tesco told him to go forth and multiply.
There is now a large plot of land being built up not far up the road. Travelling from Big C towards Nang Rong go to the set of traffic lights and the new site is on the left about 400 metres after the lights.
I have a feeling that is going to take some time though. The land will have to be built up quite alot as this was once part of the flood plains. There will have to be a lot of pipes laid to divert the direction of the water.
Ironically it is being built right next to a pig farm, although not the one owned by the guy mentioned above. Gets a bit whiffy when it's been raining.
Will check out some more. If it is not p&@#ing down with rain later I will stop on the way home and ask someone.

Both are Tesco EXPRESS which they are operate 24 hours same '7-11' so maybe its just a question of franchise purchases in that areas.
If open in Buriram it should be a big Tesco lotus similar in Surin.

If open in Buriram it should be a big Tesco lotus similar in Surin.
Tesco's dont have franchises they own them
-
I think TESCO have left it too late in Buriram. They screwed up in Surin after apparently having the advantage of being first on the scene.
Their strategy is for expansion of 'Express' stores and I think this is the best you can expect in Buriram (maybe Prakhonchai too) - I wonder how much power the Taweekit family hold ?

There is A Taweekit store in Nong Ki!!!!

According to one of the builders they are going to Nang Rong once the Nong Ki store is finished

There is hope for Prakhonchai if one horse towns like Nong Ki and Nang Rong can get a TESCO Lotus Express.
Didn't know about Taweekit in Nong Ki but at least the Nang Rong one has a KFC attached - very nice fish fingers !

I doubt if they are that bothered,Tesco seems to be on the up compared to the other Supermarket chains.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tesco_Lotus
Although Big C seems to be number one in Thailand after taking over Carrefour and now owning 111 hypermarkets against Tesco's 87. However, if other retail formats are included, Tesco is larger with some 704 stores nationwide. party6

Its a bloody shame Carrefeur decided to pull out of Thailand as the fruit, veg & bakery depts were excellent...I was in the store in Pattaya a couple of weeks ago,,,what a shithole it is now!!

No hope of them coming to Prakonchai in the forseeable future!!
The only half decent stuff from THAT KFC is the fishburger & the Fish Fingers, forget the 'Chicken'
-
They are already building a Tesco Express in Nang Rong, I saw it yesterday morning. It's on the road going from the 24 to the top end of the market.

If Nang Rong and Nong Ki are one horse towns, I would say Prakhonchai has two. Who owns the other one CoCo?
-
I actually thing TESCO Lotus is shite and I would even put Big C (which is also shite) ahead of them. The only decent store I have been was in Bangplee.
Although I don't get there very often, I rue the loss of Carrefour.

With the exception of the Surin main store opposite Big C and makro, I would rate Tesco-Lotus ahead of Big C.But the small Tesco-Lotus on the ground floor of Surin Plaza is excellent.

These are Bangkok Barbies ( pale skin ,one has even died her hair blonde ) .....Both were married to ActionMen before......the Dowry was massive ....mainly because they both came with all their ex ActionMan Husbands gear

You were scammed Ken. They were used goods and shouldn't have commanded any dowry whatsoever! A reasonable offer for their baggage would have been OK

Have you really been using the Makro in Pattaya 'for a few years'........It hasnt been open for 2 years until mid December!!!!
Perhaps you are getting confused with all the visits you pay to the Buriram Store!!

FYI - Tesco have opened what it sounds like is an express mart in Ban Kruat. I havent seen it yet as I'm in the UK but this is the start of the end for other local marts etc....it's a shame to see this happen in such a small place.

It's something that is happening the world over, see this link (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1394087/Is-end-Mom-Pop-stores-Mini-Wal-Mart-express-stores-coming-town-near-you.html)
Just as it did with all the local small Hardware Shops in the UK years ago when the big boy like Payless ,Homebase ,B&Q and Wickes DIY opened their big DIY centers ,seems to be the way of the world

Why is it a shame?
The Mom and Pop shops have had it good for long enough, mostly overcharging left, right and centre.

It will make the local supermarkets in Nong Ki charge the 'proper' price, not the proper price plus 10%

Until they go bust. The quality of fresh foods in Tesco Express is likely to be superior to that elsewhere, and in my experience the staff are likely to be more efficient and tasty too!

There will always be Mom and Pop shops in the Villages, there is no way 7/11 or Tesco will move in to these area's as there is just not enough money to justify it.In the last few years about 10-15 small shop shops have opened up in or just outside our village, how they find enough trade to stay open mystifies me or maybe they don't and are being sported by their son's or daughter's working elsewhere .Believe it or not being a shop own is still has some sort of status symbol out in the Villages !!!
-

Tasty maybe but efficient confused1
I was told by a local you have to have a school certificate to say you have reached a certain standard of education even to be coincided for an interview with Tesco or 7/11. smilenod
One of the games I like to play is to go into 7/11 or Tesco and buy some goods .Say it comes to 315 bath, you give them 500 or a 1000 note and let them ring it up so the change come up on the Cash Register. You then give them the odd 15 baht .A look of horror comes over their faces confused4 as they are totally baffled but what you have done....priceless.
And these are the youngsters that have a school certificate ,good job they don't just take anybody on. ::)

Ken, I would hardly call Pattaya a village.
Whilst Surin is smaller I doubt that the large estate, on which you acquired the house for Nok, is classed as a village either

We got bored in Surin ,so Nok's cousin who lives just outside Nong Yai in Chonburi offered us some land in her Village.Nice and quiet but close enough to nip into pattaya for a take away ( 51k ) ,if you know what I mean

Efficient -in a Thai way!. They do more than the lasses in Big C, IQ etc who only stare into their mirrors all day long!

Yes I know what you mean Nick. When I met Nok she was working in a small shop and they had 5 staff. When I asked her why they need so many staff in such a small shop she replied " Well....... you need one lady to go and get the food, one in case the other 4 are in the toilet, one because 4 are always talking on the phone, one as the other 4 are always eating and one to server the customers"
Our Local Tesco Express is far more efficient as you say Nick, there they have 8 members of Staff, but they are all willing to help you thumbup

Looks like the deal could be back on. The same place as rumoured before.
At the Junction of the Bypass with the Nang Rong- Buriram Road. On the left as going out of Buriram. Between a school and the Nissan showroom.
Starting to build up the land.
Still only gossip. No signs up yet.

Now its official - Tesco Lotus in Buriram
