Title: Buying a Truck
Post by: Freddy on April 25, 2014, 10:05:15 PM
Hi Guys.  Will be moving out to Lam Plait Mat in September and top of the list is buy a truck. Had a look at previous posts in motor section but nothing since 2011 so can anyone update/advise me please. I want the truck in my name. Will my passport and UK licence be enough at the dealership to register to me if I am buying outright.

I was told that it was easier to buy a car in my wife's name and it is. The dealers don't like the hoops involved if the Farang wants it in his name but it can be done. We are talking about a new truck, aren't we?
Get an international driving license while you are in the UK and think about getting a Thai license when you get here, easy peasy.
I am pretty sure that even if buying outright you will need a certificate of residence before driving off. Don't worry about the rest of the paperwork until you get here.

Thanks mate. Plan is to come in on AO visa and then extend to retirement. Yes a new truck. We have a house built. Is the certificate of residence a quick fix I can get done in Burriram before I change to retirement visa. Will get the international license and understand I have to get the thai driving license within 3 months of residence. Heads spinning with all the bits and pieces need to do first few months but will work through it I'm sure.

My advice is to make sure the truck is in your name. You will need a residence certificate from Immigration. Now the big question is .....They are easily obtained when you have a retirement extension but I'm not too sure when you haven't.Are you married to yourThai lady?Be very wary about putting things into their names because if everything turns pear shaped you will still have some 'wheels'. I've been here a long time & I've seen many 'disasters',one very recently too, where the guy has lost his home, his 1 years old truck & all he has now is a m/cycle............They had been married for 8 years!!

Thanks for the advice. Exactly why I want to have the truck in my name. Although together for 3 years (half of which she has spent in the UK on tourist visas) there aint never no guarantee in life !! My dilemma is, do I rent/borrow truck for 3 months whilst waiting for retirement visa conversion or buy day 1 or 2 and put in her name. I will ponder that one for a bit !!! :).

No need for an International License.

Your UK License translated to Thai (can be done locally) will suffice.

Having a retirement extension to your Non O Visa is not a requirement to getting a Thai license .....

But getting a residence certificate without one may be problematic ... though doable.

Try the police station in Lamplimat / Buriram.

Worse case scenario would be a wait of 2 months. IE: 90 day non O on arrival - apply for retirement extension with 30 days left to go.

Good advice. To my knowledge e you can get a certificate of residence on an O-visa single entry at Kap Choeng Immigration which is your immigration office for Buriram. This where you need to go for your retirement extension. You will need two letters one for the dl another for the vehicle.Cost at KCI 500 baht each or 1000 baht total or you may try your local cop shop the have been know to supply these letters. Also  no need for translation of your UK dl or need of an IDP.

1. Kap Choeng Imigration

2. The local cop stations have their own.

3. You spelled the word "form"

If you go the Buriram police station way they have their own (badly written) forms.

Here is an Immigration Bureau template ......

Other option is to pick one up from KCI.

AND if you use the local cop shop make sure your LTD will accept it as some will only accept from immigration or embassy.

And thank you Somnat. Greatly appreciate all the advice and guidance I'm getting. Closer I get to the move date the more Qs are popping up and it's good to get the various viewpoints and options.

Gotlost - Thankyou for your help also. Bit confused though (easily done) When you refer to letters x 2 from KCI or cop shop do you mean the certificate of residence or are these letters I need to obtain the certificate ??

I'm calling the them by their legal and technical name. Certificate of Residency . A letter is only good for one thing and you will need two one for dl another for buying a vehicle and the letters only have a validity of 30 days. The letters at immigration cost 500 baht each. Your cost for 2 letters, 1000 baht.
Even if you get these from your local cop shop you still need two.

Once I fill out the "Request for Certificate of Residence" form do I have to go to KCI or can the local police dept issue the "Certificate of Residence"

If it is easier try your local cop shop OR amphur office but make sure that the LTD will accept them as I said before some will only accept a letter from immigration or embassy. If the locals won't do then you will have to go to KCI.

Hi Freddy. I agree 100% with Nookies #3 reply post. NEVER put your vehicle in your wife's name. No exceptions !!

You are leaving yourself wide open to potentially completely lose a huge investment ... 1 million baht (or thereabouts)

I highly recommend that you rent a vehicle for a couple of months until you get organised. DO NOT be hurried or pressured into making a quick vehicle purchase registered in someone elses name.

I know this is a very negative post, but the harsh reality is ... if things go wrong down the track ... she WILL drive away with your truck if it's in her name.

The above is pretty sound advice. thumbup If needbe just buy a runner bike038 for 50k to 200k that you can walk away from by putting n your wife's name. When talking about 1.2m it is n your name.  moneysmile Besidesyou needtime to research whats is on the market and best for you.

Thank you all for your help and advice. Truck will be in my name!!  Have heard the new Vigo model will be released towards end of year so waiting a couple of months will work ok. New model if good or discount on the existing.

Just bought a car ast week in my name and the rules have just changed in the province of Buriram.  You must have a Tapien Barn (yellow family book), a valid passport and a valid Non "O" visa - Nang Rong wanted / insisted i have a business visa Non "B".  They didnt want to see my work permit or driving licence.  It took about one hour to complete and it was very easy.

Thanks Andy.  How easy is it to get the house book. We have a house built and my wife has one already. Do I get added to that one or do I have to get my own one.

I saw things differently, it isn't cheap paying every month, but if things go wrong both I and the wife lose a car. Better than paying outright.

Andy, just re-read your post and you refer to yellow family book, not house book. Sorry. Same question though, how do I get one of these. Do I get one individually or is it a shared document with the missus?

You have to go to your local Obbador Office and get them to order you a Tessian Ban (Yellow Book).  You'll need to get some proof from imigration that your are married and thats it.  The book says you legally live at the house and you have legal rights to it.  Don't let any body fob you off in the Obbador, as they don't like issuing them - but it's your right - also some Thai wifes don't like doing it, but that's life in Thailand.

Good luck.

I'm pretty sure that you do not need to be married to be in the Yellow Book

There used to be a rule that you could only put the car in your name if it was paid for in full. Is that still so?

I refer to her as my wife but not legally married so hope Nookie is correct that this not the requirement. She's cool with me being on house book, family book or any book for that matter.

My thai GF insisted I had to have a Yellow book and made the enquiries from other falang partners. A visit to the local council offices and a interview with the tasseban leader ( a neighbour) resulted in the speedy issue of the Yellow Book

Wise words and I'd just like to add..

If you get the truck in your name, then keep the log-book away from prying eyes/hands. I did all the above and still NEARLY lost a Million Baht truck when the book was stolen and name changed to a finance company. It took me around 2 years and 200k to get the bloody thing back!!!!!!

LOCK THAT BOOK AWAY!
