My TG wanted a vehicle, decided we needed a truck, and specially wanted a Ford Ranger Wildtrak.

Did about the same as you, gave her 225K baht and told her the dealership would finance her with no additional money.  So in a surprise she actually listened to me, she went to Ford dealership and with no previous credit history, no driver's license for a car, got the vehicle.  She could have taken it home then, but being Thai they had to wait for a lucky day.

In my earlier currupt youth I sold cars.  No dealership is going to let you walk if you  have 25% to put down.  As that would cover any depreciation on the vehicle in case of repossession.  Unless you have a large history of defaults and/or bankruptcy.  And while she did not get the Ford Credit special, she got near the same thing from the bank that the dealship uses.

My point is that there was no reason to offer up the land as collatteral.

Keith ,why have so many Americans who reside over here been 2nd hand car salesmen in their murky past?

Because a lot of Amercans were raised that any work is good work, and don't believe in going on welfare.  So they take what job is available.

After they kicked me out of the Army I needed a job and I was very ignorant of places that needed my skills.  So I tried car sales.  Failed at it as I was too honest.  It was very educational on what how the industry worked, the only ones that lie more than car salesmen are car buyers.   BTW, in addition to being a used car salesman I also did new cars and was one of the experts in new trucks.

Luckily I got laid off from that job and found my true calling as a rocket scientist.

One of my favorite quotes are that "Successful people are those that have failed, picked themselve up and tried again."  My guess is you have failed more than once.

Hi Guys,
The OP asked me several times to remove this topic but as I find some of the posts here are quiet valuable I kept most of the posts while keeping the posts unrelated to the OP.
All advised given on this topic are good for future visitors who might learn from it.

My view: How hard can it be to check pricelist of a car on the Internet?! But I guess whats done is done and we all learnt the lesson.

Cheers. sawadi :)

BTW, some advice on buying trucks:

1.  Ensure the rear axle is limited slip/traction lock.  What this means is that if you are trying to move, with this feature both wheels with spin, it you don't have it only the wheel with the least traction will spin.

2.  Unless you are living in a total mud evironment, don't get a 4 X 4.  99% of the time limited slip will work just as good.

3.  Torque.  This basically means the ability to accerate going uphill or towing.    However, I would get the most I could.

4.  4 Door.  A 4 door is really nice, and I am glad I have it (and would buy the same).  But if you don't have people in the back seat often consider a supercab (have to pull the passenger seat forward for people to get in back).  My understanding (not positive) is that the yearly taxes for a 2 door truck are less than a 4 door.

5.  Back up cam.  The bigger the truck, the harder it is to park.  A back up cam is a great help.  But make sure the cam provides voice and distance.

6.  Hi rider.  This is more ground clearance.

So if you are cost concerned, I would recommend a 2 Door high rider with limited slip, and if have passengers, got to a 4 door.  But I would be hard pressed to recommend a 4 X 4 for most of us.

What a load of bollox.

The whole scenario of having a post entitled "how to avoid being scammed by Thai gf/wife" really does piss me off.

Drop the "Thai" word. I have heard more people complain about messy divorces in their own country than I have people getting ripped off in Thailand.

If you are worried about being "scammed" then you are with the wrong woman/man. Regardless of race, religion or how many brothers she/he. has.

You will need to relax - it will be too bloody hot to do much else :)

In an attempt to get back in the vicinity of the original topic I would like to suggest that you do not do anything that you would not consider doing in your home country. How many people would buy their girlfriend (or even wife that you lived apart from) a house, etc. Long distance relationships are difficult when you live in the same country and speak the same language, attempting a long distance relationship with someone in Thailand increases the odds against it working. Not impossible, but more difficult to be sure. Use your head, the one on your shoulders, and good luck.
