Alcohol sales ban for Visakha Bucha
Published: 23 May 2013 at 16.47Online news:
Sales of all kinds of alcoholic drinks are banned from midnight Thursday until midnight Friday, May 24, Visakha Bucha Day, Deputy Public Health Minister Cholanan Srikaew said on Thursday.

The ban has been imposed under Prime Minister's Office's Announcement No 2 of 2009.

Properly registered hotels are, however, exempted from the ban under the Hotels Act.

Mr Cholanan said health offices throughout the country will work with local police to enforce the ban.  Violators are liable to up to six months in jail and/or a fine of 10,000 baht.

Visakha Bucha Day falls on the full moon day of the sixth lunar month.  It commemorates the birth, enlightenment and death of Lord Buddha. thailandflag

Isn't that a bit disrespectful GL ?

I think the point is that sales are banned to mark the biggest buddha day of the year - serving booze in coffee mugs doesn't make it non-alcoholic as far as I am aware, As I understand it, the selling is the offence - whether in a glass or a mug. yes , you can give it away and put it in a glass for all to see - technically, not illegal. Back to respect.

Don't get me wrong, I am not saying I agree with all that - in fact I hate the hypocrisy that will see Thais buying and drinking at village shops on 'no alcohol' days.

Just broadening the debate.

CoCo I get what your saying, but alot of this is tongue in cheek stuff, and I don't think most of us here are Budhists....I for one don't believe in religion, but IF I did Budhism would be a better way to go,unless you are a total tool like some of the "locals" read Thai's ....that only take it seriously when it suits them.
