Hi All,I know this might be a point of heated disscussion, but I was having a talk with a Thai friend of mine a couple of weeks ago,and I'm not "Thai bashing",as I have many good Thai friends, but he was TRYING to explain to me how Thai's view us as stupid, and how we will never understand the true Thai ways etc....and the best bit....Thai's are smarter in basically everyway, then Farangs.I was quick to point out that WE invented, mobile phones,TV's,washing machines, electricity etc etc...and Thai's,to my knowledge, haven't invented anything....I was not answered and looked at with a vacant expression. So what do you good people think??Am I wrong, regards JasonB.
-
Just ask yourself : is there any Thai nobelpricewinner ever, is there ever any real Thai invention made ... I live here now since 2003 and my concensus is that Thai people feel themselves SO superior to anyone that you just have to live with it.
I know it takes years to "accept" it or "live" with that notion but to answer your question : YES ... we are in their opinion dumbasses that pick up the girls that no "decent" thai would want to be seen with except in a shorttime motel ... and most off the time they can bankrupt a foreigner in a few months time so that he has to "flee" the country to go back home and lick his wounds ... sawadi pi mai khun JasonB

Hi Dundeem, yes mate, but cunning and lying to fleece us of our money does not equate to being mentally smart,I've only been here for 3 years, but I worked this sh$t out fairly quickly.I'm lucky that my misses has put herself though uni and is a teacher who actually thinks about the world, and how and why things work, outside of Thailand, regards JasonB.
-
Don't wish to knock you Jason but Uni degrees & teaching jobs are nearly all bought.I taught English in Pattaya for nearly 5 years & found that the average Thai teacher is just as thick as the average Thai
-
That goes for a lot of the Falang teaching here to, not all but a lot
-
Thai way of thinking is very different from foreigners, I think Thais are smarter when it come to everyday's life wisdom. About inventions, etc, that is something else.
-
Hi Nookie,I'm aware that a lot of Thai's more often then not,buy their degrees, but the misses wants to learn about the world, and other ways of doing things.I have found that Thai's are really good at taking something that is stuffed and repairing it so it works again, but as for invention,it seems beyond them,at least for now.As for farang teachers, well we all know they are good, and bad,in equal amounts.

If we are so stupid how is it we have all the money ?
There is much arrogance in Thailand. The bottom line is how much are you prepared to put up with ?
As Speros a BM said to me on another thread "we are all foreigners here" how correct he is. Up to us if we wish to stay. If we do we must fit in. We all have to ask ourselves how much will we put up with to do so. sawadi

Oh Mate,JT,don't get me wrong,I ffing love Thailand, and the people in general, but some things get me,I believe it's up to us small band of expats,to show them different ways to think....the Thai's I have met that were educated o/s,are a world apart from the locals here.As they have seen the other side,so to speak, regards,JasonB
-
Sorry,I forgot, also I tend to drive in a careful and correct manner on the road,I indicate, allow traffic to enter, and wave them on etc,in an attempt to teach them about courtesy on the road, maybe some will rub off to them....maybe,JasonB.

I think you will find the Falang don't have all the money at all, take a look around you at all the building work and new cars on the road this is Thai investment not Falang.
Whilst the Falang tighten the Perse strings the Thais keep on investing.
-
Yes Mate,we don't have all the money, and the gold shops, over the last couple of days, have gone MAD withThai's buying gold,I seen 2m even 3m Baht changing hands, but they are the minority in my view, the average Thai is working for 8k a month.....as for the buildings going up everywhere,it's more likely the banks money,or the underbelly of money from other things?? Not sure...but for surethe rich are controlling most of it,and they are only a fraction of Thai's...the rest are just surviving.
-
How many of those new cars will be back on the forecourts when they can't afford the next payment or insurance in 12 months time, also the property charnotes will be in Thai Chinese hands very soon.
Having returned from Malaysia & Cambodia recently I feel that the Thais are in for a rude awakening when Asean comes into effect in 2015. Malaysian taxi drivers and Cambo street kids can speak better English that Thai English teachers. Also they have a work ethic and are keen to work and learn rather than expect people to give them money for minimum shoddy effort.
Thais superiority complex is ill founded, they are fed this cr@p because it suits the ruling elite, however it will bite them in the a*se when they are bottom of the pile in 2015, then maybe I willl get a few more baht for my pound!

Jason, I fear that you may be assuming an ability/willingness to learn that is not there.
As said earlier, they have invented fcuk all and their best attribute is to copy something from elsewhere.
-
Have to agree totally, with the above two posts....unfortunately.

red bull

I dont think thai are any smarter or dumber then the average falang. But they do have a different outlook on life.
-
Agree with "most" of what has been said.
Just one thing. What language are people using when talking to the locals? If one learns to speak Thai, as I have, there tends to be a totally different, more informative and brighter conversation.
Just one more thing. Let's be fair, there are (have been) some f*&king stupid farangs here.

Thai's invented waste-bins made out of car tyres and walking ATM's

Please don't misunderstand me Jason I love Thailand too. I particularly love Issan. However we have to be realists. TBWG and Co-Co have made very well put points. These two gentleman have more experience than I with Thailand. On my last trip in February my son accompanied me. My advice to him was to enjoy the experience but to be aware that Thailand was not quite the place he thought. Unfortunately my warning proved too true. Whilst in Rayong my son witnessed a Farlang killed. A minor dispute ramped up and out came a knife. Other experiences have shown me that the Land of Smiles can quickly turn on a Farlang. We are indeed the foreigners here.

Star man has got it right, and Thailand wouldn't be Thailand with western ideology
Surely the reason you are here is to get away from that...
Simply put like it or move on people the choice is yours

I see it nothing more than national pride in a lot of ways, good on them it's of no real harm to us, seen it in really failed countries such as PNG. No offence is really meant by it in the most.

Well said!

well Thais are very patriotic, they love their mother land and then they vigorously and determinedly strew plastic rubbish all over it. If they don't burn it, of course. The UK wasn't much better when I lived there 40 years ago, so I won't criticise the Thais more than I would criticise any stupid behaviour I see anywhere.
Driving down the road during the time that rice was lying out to dry, over 8 Km I only saw one guy that seemed to have a rake suitable (and very simple) for the purpose, a big contrast to Europe where people actually think about how to make their tools just that little bit better every time they use them.
But sure, I hear stories EVERY DAY about what seem to me to be stupid Farangs, my wife saved a guy from being beaten up by the Thai husband of the girl he was courting, 30 years younger. This morning.
