I also think the Kasikorn would be your best bet. In my experience, they have been the most "farang friendly" compared to TMB, SCB & GSB. Then again, like most agencies in Thailand which have multiple offices / branches (eg immigration & driving licence centres) it could depend on the particular branch or even the member of staff processing your request....

Are you not getting confused credit card or debit card.............Debit Cards are readily available if you have a bank account with the said bank......Credit cards are not.For a farang to have a Thai Credit Card you have to operate your own business together with holding the correct work/business visa.

I have the usual Kasikorn ATM, which functions as a debit card. But from that you can apply online for a Shopping Card, which is allocated a 16 digit number, and operates in the same way as a credit card, whereby you can buy online, book flights, hotels etc, but there is no credit. The payment is immediately debited to your account.
I find it very useful.

I have a bank account with Bangkok bank, but i have been advised to try different banks to see what is available.
But reading your reply seems to have put an end to my idea of obtaining a Credit card here.
Another member Prakhonchai Nick as also given me some advise,so i will pursue that line of inquiry first and see where that takes me.
Thanks for your reply and advise.

You may want to try Aeon Bank too as its not Thai owned, they may have different rules re Farang Credit cards????

I went to the Citibank office in Bangkok as I have been a Citibank Cardholder for 20 years. They said I need 10 million baht on deposit with them. The credit card desk at Big C is Citibank.

To do banking online here in America and have the money available when I go there to Thailand is what I am looking for. I see BankokBank has an office in New York. The money can be sent to BKK Bank as a transfer from my bank (no charge) but when I gets to BKK Bank it goes to Thailand and the conversion is the current rate IN Thailand. This sounds like the way to go for me. I checked with Kasikorn but they said I could not open an account unless I was there. What bank are any Americans out there finding is the best to use?
I appreciate the help.

Be careful otherwise you may find you're paying the deposit on your truck AGAIN!

Thanks Nookie, but that is exactly why I want the account in my name. Personal account that only I have access too. (It will be inherited by TW I am sure, but I am not telling her about it.)

An expensive way to learn!

SCB will do it, you need to have double the amount of wanted credit on a "locked" bank account unless you have work permit and an income to show in Thailand.
-
Why have credit card if you need to have same (or even doble) amount inside the bank ? Then regular debit card will be a much better option and (guess) with lower charges smilenod.

And you are a traveling man I presume? Have you tried to make reservations or other things abroad with a Thai debit card. The question was not if it was good or not but if it was possible. brick1
