Road Safety Center urged 17 provinces to be on high alert against Songkran road accidents and fatalities
BANGKOK, 14 April 2012 (NNT) – Thailand's road safety center has called on dozens of provinces to be extra-alert on the rise in road accidents during the Songkran holidays.
The Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department's Director-General ViboonViboon Sanguanpong, also the Deputy Chairman of the Road Safety Directing Center, said that statistics collected during the past 6 years showed 17 provinces have seen more than 40 deaths during a single annual festival period.period.
These provinces are Roi Et, Chanthaburi, Suphan Buri, Surat Thani, Khon Kaen, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Chonburi, Saraburi, Ayutthaya, Phetchabun, Lopburi, Bangkok, Chiang Rai, Nakhon Sawan, Chiang Mai, Nakhon Ratchasima and Phitsanulok.
Mr. Viboon added that the total road fatalities in these provinces are approximately 45.45 percent of the total deaths seen throughout the country during the same period.
He said that the main causes of the deaths included drunk driving, speeding and the absence of head helmets among motorbike riders.
Therefore, officials in all of these provinces have been urged to work integratively with related agencies to cut down road accidents through stricter legal enforcement and social approaches, in order to save as many lives as possible, particularly during the week-long Songkran festival celebrations.

I've just checked the Bangkok Post website, which gives a total of 114 deaths over the first three days. Compare that with the daily total, year-long, of 34 a day (post on TV). If BP is right, that's pretty good.
Yes, I know any deaths are a sad waste of life, but only 12 more for three days of 'sanook, sanook' is pretty good by Thai standards.

TAN_Network 4th day of 7 danger days for Songkran road accidents saw 210 deaths, 2,288 people injured in 2,134 accidents mostly caused by drunk driving 5 minutes

210 for four days is pretty grim. Last year it was 271 (or 279, I don't remember which) for the whole seven days.
BTW, 144 was right yesterday; Bangkok Post got it wrong.

there are two ways you could look at this situation one is great loads of dick heads been taken of the roads now. and two we can feel sorry for the Innocent Thais or fallangs who obey the law and still get wiped out by a piss head. i think in the not to distant future songkran will be a alcohol free event with strict law enforcements applying. we had a party this year on 13/14/15 on the 14th there were about 300 people there and i was talking to 5 police men and there wife's and they all were driving and drinking whiskey makes you think a guys happy songkran

A total of 320 people were killed in 3,129 road accidents over the “seven dangerous days” of the Songkran holiday, from April 11 to 17, the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department reported on Wednesday.
The fatalities were up from 271 last year by 49.
A total of 3,320 people were reported injured in road accidents during the seven days, a drop from the 3,476 injured reported last year,
The department on Tuesday reported the six-day road toll at 282.

UK has below 2000 traffic fatalities in a year, about the same population as Thailand, so you would expect 40 deaths a week in a normal week, but even if you double that for a bad week you don't get anywhere near 282.
