Everyone loves a good looking Thai woman that has 'snake wrangling' in her resume'. cool1 She's getting ready for bed and sees something move under one of the 'tewpaas'. Further investigation determins its a small cobra (little over 1/2 meter) caught in one of those sticky glue traps.
She removes the snake and trap to place it outside by the road where it is left overnight to be killed the next morning by someone else. In keeping with Buddhist tradition couldnt kill it in her house for fear of 'bad ghost following you around'..... Ahhhh Issan. I informed her that when I am there in 2 weeks if I find a poisonous snake in the house ...its gonna die. told her I already have bad spirits following me around ...any new ones can kiss my ass then straight to the back of the line.
I'll take a few bad spririts over a dead wife or daughter whether she likes it or not! sawadi

Totally agree with you Kodan. bravo1
In my years in Thailand I have "dealt" with more than 250 snakes. chairhit With kids around, you cannot take chances.
What incidentally is a "tewpaas"?
-
"Tewpaa"... I probably really screwed up the spelling but its those stand alone closets that EVERY thai house has. You know the typical thai house 4 tewpaas ... NO chairs nowinkbar

I can understand your concern over the snake being around your family, but that does not give you right to the kill it,their are plenty of people around that would be more than willing to help you remove the snake, remember we all have the right to live.

Your sentiments are appreciated Celticman BUT when there are young kids around, and no help is readily available there really is no other alternative.
Snakes can kill!
Welcome to the forum!

As nice as that sentiment is, I would not jeopardise my family whilst we phoned dial-a-snake-adviceline.
That goes for anything that would threaten my families well-being - I am not victimising snakes.

If I am in the jungle and unknowingly violate a poisonous snakes personal space it will inflict a venomous bite which will kill me in its defense of home and family. I am simply allowing equality in my defense of home and family. Before you start with the 'snake doesnt have the ability to reason as we humans do' ....it was you that equated reptiles and humans with the 'we all have a right to live' statment.
This being said .. I do agree with you about needless killing of anything. We all have a right to live unless you endanger my family. Then...you life expectancy is significantly diminished reptile or not.
Oh and ... Welcome to the Forum party4

Had many snakes in my house. Wife usually calls someone over to catch it. They then take it home and eat it.
Have to agree that anything that is a danger to the family has to be removed. If it has to be killed then OK. If it is killed and then eaten even better.

When I'm in Thailand I have had many experiences with snakes in the house out door toilet, and just generally in the garden especially after it has rained alot, but there seems to be more around these days.
Me and my father-in-law are always in charge of killing them for the same reasons as coco and Praconchai nick says, we have loads of kids and toddlers in our home and the snake gets it or manages to escape. when we kill them we do eat them (me and Father-in-law) as for some reason the women won't? although they will eat anything else that moves.
It is a shame but my family is more important and we don't take chances although when the Dad tells me oh that one was safe I do feel guilty. If I see one in the jungle or fields I just try to get as far away as possible but normally the snake has the same thing in mind and legs it.
snake tastes great but i'm not not keen on snake labb when my father in law insists on keeping the skin in the mince ,too crunchy for me.
I might as well add that scorpions don't fair much better on my land either. Oh yeah and those narly looking centipedes.
-
Kill them yes, because they do represent a danger especially to the kids, but eat them.NO! And I hope John, you don 't eat the scorpions, although I believe many Thai's do..
-
Na Nick,
I don't eat scorpions, but have tried most of the other Thai favourites, rats , live ants etc.But hate eating the bugs and silk worms no good!!
Have you noticed that the seems to be more snakes around the house in recent years ?
-
Aww com'on Nick....snake is pretty good ... especially fried. As for scorpions I would try them if given the chance but you seem to have some super secret expat inside info on NOT eating them... Do Tell.
John ... going to toilet always makes me nervous when I think about snakes. Ours has a low ceiling.... definately not made for farangs. And at night no frigging way am I gonna walk back there to take a piss when I can do it in the yard. Anything more invovled than pissing can wait till morning when I can see anything evil in the night vampv

Yeh Ive eaten just about everything that has been offered in the last couple of years. Malang, rat, beetles, I dont mind the crickets... they are kinda tasty. But then I grew up in America in the South so Im used to eating things most wont. Most Thais find it amusing seeing farang eat various offerings. More than once Ive gotten the "ooohhhhhh" followed by a round of Chang. hungry1

Quick funny story about the first summer my wife spent in the UK.
whilst sorting out our back garden which had been neglected for over a year since I spent most of it as a newly wed living with my wives parents in tapek, she started to attempt to cut down a huge pampus grass and I was in the house doing something or other when I heard her scream so loudly I thought she was being attacked, she came running in terrified and jumped into my arms weeping.
I calmed her down and asked what was wrong so she told me about this dangerous animal in the garden that hasd come out of the grass.
So I took her by the hand and asked her to show me where it came from, what I saw looking up at us with gentle eyes was a hedgehog and my wife was petrified until I picked it up and explained what it was and it was harmless.
I suppose you can understand her never seeing this animal before and all the spikes, but coming from a woman who I would spend days hunting land crabs with and witnessing daily her pulling scorpions out of holes with her bare hands only to drop them quickly and laugh ,it seemed crazy.
Anyway every time I think of this it always cheers me up, Although the first time I killed a scorpion you would think I was fighting a tiger I was so scared.
I just what your used to I suppose.
When ever I used to ask her if something was poisonous she would say only if it bites you LOL

Kodan I have another funny story about this subject,
Whilst living with my wives parents when we got married she fell pregnant and in middle of the night (well for the village community )about 10pm my wife wanted green mangos and we knew a mango tree in some jungle next to our home and nobody would go and get them, so she asked me and with some protest I said OK, took a machete and a torch and off I went, shitting myself about snakes/scorpions/and all other night time things you know how loud the jungle is at night.
Anyway I found the tree got some mangos and came back in one piece, the whole family were so proud and were saying stuff I could not understand, but I knew they were bigging me up and it felt good so I asked my wife what they were saying and she said that I was really brave, and we all were smiling and nodding at each other when she added that they were too scared of the ghosts. Same irony as her not being scared of real danger .
I love the Thais
-
Hahaha thats funny!! :D Good on you for taking care of the wife in the middle of the night!!
Yeh the ghost thing is pretty serious. My wife woke me up one night in a hotel saying two men were just there and described them. I scan the room quickly .. jump outta bed ready to do battle....with me willy leading the way. slapfight Check the door to see if its locked from the INSIDE ( I was on the 7th floor of the Thepnakorn) then checked the bath then check the windows ..... all was clear.
I tried to tell her she'd had a dream but she was having none of that. I soon realized further discussion was going to lead to a pissed of wife so pulled her close and assure her that 'no ghost were gonna get her' ... she fell alseep..... I kept an eye out for further paranormal activity. newsleeping
I got none of the 'bravery accolades' you did...but then I didnt go into the jungle spot1

It was not much of a choice I was more scared of a pregnant wife with food cravings than the jungle LOL
Your story has just reminded me of a very strange experience I had at my in laws home the first time my wife and I came back to Thailand.
We had been back in the village maybe two or three nights and had gone to bed, I woke up for no reason to see the silhouette of my wife sat up next to me in bed, rubbing my eyes I asked what she was doing and when I took my hands away from my eyes no silhouette and she was sleeping behind me. Pretty freaky hey?
Anyway I told her this the next morning and she went straight to her grandmother and told her what had happened.
she was told that the Mountain was upset (Panom rung, we live at is foot) because we had promised to take a pigs head to it as soon as we returned to Thailand and had not done so yet. so that was it motorcycle everywhere to find a pigs head and up we went made the offering, and it never happened again.
but it was a very strange experience.
-
Typical village beliefs Jon - but did you really believe it?
-
Jon, Nick
I got no problem with a few ghost roaming around. I grew up in a haunted house so these things seem almost normal to me. Everybody knows Buriram with its Khemer background is rife with witchcraft and beautiful thai women that put spells on Farang. nowinkbar
You cant do anything of significance in a village in Buriram without consulting to see which day and time is best. And it Always invovles the white dude paying up for something party11

Jon - take more water with it or, leave the Chang alone redman
The foot of that mountain must be covered in pig's heads! we have land a couple of clicks away and the guy who dug out our 40m x 25m pond asked for a pig's head so he could make the offering before he started work. The idea is to obtain good weather and conditions so it is a smooth job.

Anyone wanting a pigs head for these stupid purposes, whether wife, family or contractor would be told by me to go and buy their own bloody pigs head.
I will NOT be involved in any of this lunacy!
Anyone who coughs up for all this crap needs to think again!
-
Nick,
I don't really know if I believe in the Pigs head thing, but I truly saw my wives silhouette sat up in bed when in fact she was sleeping behind me, maybe it was the chang I don't know?
But it did freak out the family as I'm sure with your Thai experience you can appreciate, we have taken many pigs heads up the mountain for many different reasons over the years, does it work in some cases our luck had changed but many times no change at all, what else would you expect, even when we go to the temples the monks will advise us to do these ancient pre Buddhist practices to help out. It is all placebo science but it keeps them happy just like bits of string around your wrists.
I quite like it all and they are always happy when this stuff goes on. Thinking about it I'm quite superstitious also, I always touch wood, salute magpies, won't open umbrellas inside, so I probably need to take some water with my Chang like CoCo says but as long as it doesn't hurt anyone it's all good no?
No dark magic which must be bad if it works or not as the intentions are negative and some will get hurt one way or another.
How much is a Pigs head today ? last time it was about 350 bhat, small price to pay for calm in the house.

Jon ... for what its worth I agree with you. Yeh I agree with you that it is Placebo Science but it works for them. If it works for my wife and makes her smile ... well .. thats good enough for me. Just look at all the pro atheletes that MUST have that necklace or those socks in order to win. Western culture is not so different but we do it privately.
And yeh....350 bt for a head is worth every penny if you are the hero that keeps peace in the house.
-
Soooo this thread about a cobra in the house has become a thread about pigs heads
You guys trying to tell me something ?? Fortunately my wife doesnt do the pigs head thing ... she leaves that to the khemer side of Buriram so Im not forking out 350bt every other week. All in all I dont think she has too many superstitious rituals as pronounced as a pigs head. She likes to do Merit and believes in ghosts and cant kill a COBRA IN HER HOUSE but all in all I think I'll keep her
-
It's not just the khemer/Thai community that do the pigs head thing ,our Village is Laos/Thai and the locals are always buying Pig's heads for offerings to bring good luck !!!!

Well ....69,000,000 Thais Cant be wrong!!! winkboy
