Post by: PrakhonchaiExpatServices on July 20, 2011, 10:41:33 AM
Prakhonchai Expat Services are pleased to present a 3 night discovery tour to Siem Reap from where you can visit the world famous Angkor Wat. The price of 3,250 Baht per person includes return  minibus/coach travel from Prakhonchai to Siem Reap and 3 nights, plus breakfast,  in the City River 3 star hotel.  For single travellers the cost will be circa 4,400 Baht.
The basic itinerary is as follows:-
22 Aug     07.30 Leave Prakhonchai  - arrive hotel by 13.00
23 Aug     09.00 Visit to Angkor Wat  (optional)  +$27.50 per person
24 Aug     Free Day
25 Aug     12.00 Depart hotel  - arrive Prakhonchai approx 17.00
The itinerary allows time on the day of arrival to discover Siem Reap and perhaps visit the National Museum that has a whole floor dedicated to Buddha. A useful source of information prior to visiting Angkor Wat.  There are several Buddhist temples in Siem Reap including  Wat Preah which is close to the City River hotel. Alternatively, you may wish to relax with a glass of Angkor draft  beer for 50cents (15 Baht) in Pub Street !
The price of 3,250 Baht is based on 2 people sharing a superior double room at the City River hotel. A deluxe room is available for an extra $7 per room per night. City River hotel is situated 5 minutes from the centre. The rooms are well-appointed with a small fridge. The roof top pool offers panoramic views of Siem Reap. www.cityriverhotel.com (http://www.cityriverhotel.com)  Alternative accommodation is available at (a) My Home guest house at 3,000 Baht per person (single pays 3,950 Baht). About The Tour.
The tour will depart from Prakhonchai on Monday 22nd August at 07.30 am. It is approximately two hours to the border crossing at Chong Sa Ngam. We will have a rest-stop for 15 minutes, about 40km from the border.
At the border we need to ‘check out’ of Thailand and then get a visa to enter Cambodia – this costs $20. Thai citizens do not need a visa. Our initial impression is that the officials at the border are ‘user-friendly’. We will be met by our minibus/coach who will take us to our hotels in Siem Reap – just under 2 hours.
We will take guests to reception at their respective hotels - after that it is ‘free time’.  For those who have pre-booked a trip to Angkor Wat details of their tuk-tuk driver will be provided.
We do not wish to ‘over-organise’ this trip and believe everyone should be free to enjoy Siem Reap/Angkor Wat as they choose. However, we are quite prepared to make recommendations, on an individual basis, if guests so request.
Angkor Wat is a beautiful historical site and a ‘must see’ in our view. Siem Reap itself is a well-developed tourist city that is almost European in feel – there is vast array of restaurants and bars offering Khmer, Italian, French, Mexican and Indian cuisine – and a KFC. Thai wives will find khao pad and a som tam equivalent! Guests may wish to consider a trip to the floating village on the Tonle Sap (the largest freshwater lake in S.E. Asia).
On Thursday 25th August we will check out of the hotels by 12 Noon for the return journey to the border, and back to Prakhonchai.

Important Information:
Everyone must have a current passport. Thais do not need a visa but all foreigners will need to take $20 and a passport size photo. Arrival and departure cards will need to be completed for Thai immigration. Those with Marriage/Retirement visa will need to obtain a re-entry permit in advance.
US$ will be required in Cambodia. Change is usually given in Riels – approx 4,000 to one Dollar. We can obtain US$ by pre-order. You can use Thai and international cards in local ATMs to obtain Dollars – we recommend this as a ‘back up’.
Be aware that you will be approached by children, and landmine victims, to buy books, postcards etc. A polite refusal usually sees them move on quickly (they are not like Indian tailors in Pattaya!) and the same applies to tuk-tuk drivers.
Finally, Siem Reap seems to be a safe environment in which to enjoy your trip, just take the usual precautions regarding money and personal possessions.

ANGKOR WAT INFORMATION
Angkor Wat is regarded by many as the 8th wonder of the world.  Even a half-day trip around the main Angkor Wat, Ta Prohm and Bayon will probably have you agreeing with them!  Some people say that you need 3 days to explore the entire Angkor Wat city complex. We think that anything up to a full day will give you a good experience of these magnificent temples. Additional excursions are available for those who wish to explore further.

We recommend a one day pass for $20 per person. You can visit as many temples as you wish and your pass must be shown at each temple. We can also arrange a tuk-tuk for 2 people sharing for $15 for the day. The tuk-tuk drivers are very experienced and can give advice on which temples to visit. They can also take you to a local restaurant for lunch. They are ‘yours’ for the day so make the most of them – or just head back to the hotel when you have seen enough. The drivers will be keen to take you out the next day – feel free to make your booking if you have ‘hit it off’ with your driver. Tips are probably expected and $5 (if satisfied) would be the norm. For those who want an escorted tour we can arrange to book a local guide.

We can arrange for the tuk-tuk to pick you up from the hotel and take to buy your one day pass. From there it is likely that you will first go to the main Angkor Wat and then to Ta Prohm where Angeline Jolie filmed Tomb Raider. Don’t miss Bayon which has 216 faces etched into it.

Tips: Be aware that you will pestered by children trying to sell books, postcards, food etc. They are quite polite but can become irritating. Cold drinks are expensive around the sites so you may want to take your own. Some tuk-tuk drivers will provide bottled water from a cool box.

If you do nothing else before your visit have a look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Angkor_Wat (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Angkor_Wat)

A ‘templing’ blog here:-

About Siem Reap
Siem Reap is where you will stay on your visit to Angkor. The town is actually a cluster of old villages and later overlaid with a French colonial centre. Note the colonial and Chinese style architecture in the town centre. Often missed are the many opportunities to experience traditional Cambodian ‘Apsara’ dance performances, craft shops and silk farms.
Siem Reap is centred around the Old Market and Pub Street. The former offers a host of sights and smells whilst Pub Street has something for every taste. The centre can be accessed within 10 minutes on foot from any of our chosen hotels. Tuk-tuks are readily available and will usually cost $2 per trip in town.
Angkor Wat is about 15 minutes away by tuk-tuk and the Tonle Sap 20 minutes.
We are happy to provide ideas for local restaurants based on our own limited experience – however, half the fun is trying something for yourself.

We have had a couple of unexpected additional bookings for the trip on Monday 22nd August.

This has resulted in us hiring a second minibus for the Thai side of the journeys.

It means that we have additional places available should anyone make a last minute decision to go to Angkor Wat.

I had the fun and pleasure to be on this trip. It was a great four days and have to say that Ray and Nick had the whole thing well organised and made the experience of Siem Reap and the Angkor Wat a memorable occasions. The evenings were also fantastic discovering differant restaurants and watering holes and we managed to fit in some other interesting excursions. I am looking for help arranging a trip to Seam Reap.  The time of your scheduled trip does not work for me, but your itinerary is very close.  I would like to go about 2 January and return to Thailand about 6 January or 7 January.  I will be in Buriram (Nan Rong) for the start but would want to go to Bangkok and on to Chiang Mai after the Cambodia trip.  Most likely I will be traveling with my Thai fiancee.  Can you help me organize this?    Thanks

How much could you fit into a 2-day trip ???

This is  a list of what I would want to see while in Siem Reap:

 1 ) Angkor Wat
 2 ) Bayon Temple
 3 ) Angkor Thom
 4 ) Ta Prohm
5 ) Banteau Srei – Can be done with Kabal Spean?
 6 ) Preah Khan
 7 ) Pre Rup
 8 ) Banteay Samre
 9 ) Phnom Bakheng

Do you think a traveller would be be able to fit all of this into 2 days in Siem Reap ???
I know most of it lies within the Angkor Archaelogical Park, but I hear it's quite massive...if not, what would you say are the MUST-SEE's vs. the "nice to see if you have time"

I've heard of people hiring drivers to get them to all these locations--is that something that Prakhonchai Expat Services could arrange to maximize your time there, or is it doable without a driver ???

Thanks so much!  WW

Welsh Wonder - I will attempt to answer your questions.

Banteay Srei and Kabal Spean can be done together. They are situate some 30/40 kms from Siem Reap, and Kabal Spean itself is on top of a mountain which realistically takes 1 hour to reach. Therefore whilst these 2 can be visited in 1 day, there would not be much time left for anything else.

The first 4 can easily be visited together, and depending on what time you started and how long you spent at each, could easily  be visited in a morning.. Most of our guests visit this group, and generally have seen enough by lunchtime.

6,7,8 and 9 are not much visited, but since they are within the main Angkor area, I would suggest they could be visited in the afternoon.

After that lot you would need to enjoy more than a few 50 cent draft Angkor beers in Pub Street!

Prakhonchai Expat Services can indeed arrange all the necessary transport from Siem Reap to take you  to all these fascinating locations. The choice is yours -either a tuk tuk or a taxi. Bring some friends and the costs are negligible.

Perhaps you would care to join us on our next trip on 20th February, which is already booking fast with 18 names to date.

I would just add that IMHO it is important not to try and do too much in a short period of time. If seeing "X" number of attractions is MOST important to you then add another day (or more) so you can view at your leisure. I believe that soaking up the ambiance is as important as the visit itself. I could not put a price on the sense of tranquility I felt trudging back from Kabal Spean, in a tuk tuk, as the sun was beginning to set. I would also suggest that some of the ambiance would have been lost if traveling by minibus.

Everyone will have a different view and holidays/sightseeing are very personal.  I would not have missed the cultural Smile of Angkor show with buffet - others would not perceive value at $38.

For me, half a day seeing the Angkor Wat, Ta Prohm and Bayon is sufficient. That said, the trip to banteay srei and kabal spean was very worthwhile. Note: avoid wearing flip-flops for kabal spean - they are not conducive to walking 1700 metres uphill and over some parts of rough terrain. Also - think twice if you are carrying over 125 kgs in weight,or have a heart condition.

It is slightly disappointing that you must have an Angkor wat day pass to visit kabal spean because it means you cannot take it in on the way to Siem Reap from the border. A shame because there is also a very nice hillside restaurant en-route.

I have never made the effort to visit the temples at dawn or dusk  - those who do make the effort are suitably rewarded. A prefer the comfort of my bed or the call of the 50c Angkor draught (the latter at dusk!).

('draught' beer is the more traditional spelling).

It would however be possible to visit Kabal Spean and Banteay Srei on the last morning of a 3 day tour, by going there en-route to the border, obtaining an Angkor day pass in Siem Reap and taking lunch at the hillside restaurant, before departing Cambodia at the Choam border crossing.

Probably just me.  I was interested in the Sihanoukville tour in March but I have meetings to attend on the 15th.

What I want to do is travel from Buriram to Siem Reap and stay there a few days before going on to Phnom Penh and on to Sihanoukville for a couple of days before crossing into Thailand.  Basically the opposite journey of the March tour.

Don - obviously, anyone can arrange their own itinerary. We do benefit from having a team of suppliers that we work worth and we would be happy to put a trip together for you. Perhaps you can PM with what you would like to do and the sort of budget you may be working to i.e.do you want 5 star accommodation, back pack hostels or somewhere in between ?

We booked a 4 day trip for 3 guys last month and arranged taxis, minibus, hotels etc.
