How will England get along???.........Beat the Pakis in the 2nd warm up game yesterday,,,..
Peterson & Collingwood scored some runs.....Broad another 5 wicket haul
-
My bet is South Africa, with Australia as a dark horse; I don't think India have the bowling, though it's true they know the pitches well. My hope is for Sri Lanka to win, with Bangladesh as a real outsider.
England? Well, good luck, but they have to shake off their post-Ashes torpor.
-
India off to a flier with Sehwag in spectacular form
-
With batting like that, who needs bowlers? As I write, Kenya struggling at 62-6.
-
I blinked. They were all out for 69!

How pedantic can you be??? Stick to Gaelic Football swordfight

just because you got it wrong again.pedantic big word for you ????stick to your ladyboys with your mates slapfight
-
Ever heard of a metaphor, Jimbo? In case you hadn't realised, "stick to" is another metaphor.
-
After which silly interruption, can we get back to Cricket?
Good win for Sri Lanka... everything seems to be going according to expectations. Now let's see if Zimbabwe can spring a surprise against Australia!
-
10 wkt win for NZ

Pundits reckon W/C cricket has had its day...
Twenty 20 will be the new kid on the block!!!

Pundits reckon W/C cricket has had its day...
Twenty 20 will be the new kid on the block!!!
I don't know about "pundits", but try telling that to Boycott! In fact, Haroon Lorgat (if I've spelt him right), President of the ICC, said the future of the game lay with 20/20. Heaven help the game if he's right! 20/20 cannot develop batting and bowling skills, both of which need a longer format... and without such development, 20/20 will degenerate into a clone of baseball.
-
I have to agree with you 100%....Like you say if it does happen then there is no future for the game as we know it.
-
what you say i fear is true.I like all forms of the game.........but when i watch live 20/20 games at different grounds the crowds are there unlike the county championship games whereby there are so few people.Test cricket is different at least for now as most games are sell outs or there abouts.A lot depends on the spectators appreciation of the finer points of the game...........being able the batthrough long periods.......witness tussles between batsmen and bowlers when few runs are scored..etc the popularity of the cross bat slog seems to be winning with the 20/20 format. Wonder what Mr Boycott would have to say on the matter
-
20/20 is cricket for the instant gratification generation. But, as you say, it brings in the money, without which the longer forms of the game couldn't survive anyway.
-
Netherlands are building a good score against England
-
"instant gratification" ...sounds like your kind of a game nookie ..:-)

I bet those maidens had googlies ..LOL

Well, England won, just. All credit to the Netherlands team, especially Tendo (I can't spell his full name). But a win is a win is a win.
-
India 229-2 against England, Tendulkar 115 n.o. Looks like England won't win this one.
-
Well, England didn't win, they tied! A fitting result after superb centuries by Tendulkar and Strauss, great bowling by Bresnan and Zaheer. The best match of the tournament so far.
-
Just been watching the highlights,,,,,,,,,,,What a cracker
-
Just been watching the Windies thrash the Dutch........clinical display. Reminiscent one how they used to dispatch all comers in their heyday. Roach 6-26 awesome

Never heard of the guy before
-
There are a lot of guys like that around these days, Nookie! Like Chris Woakes, who set an ODI record and then vanished. And Shahzad, who seems to have replaced him.
-
Well played, Ireland! England deserved to lose; they couldn't hold their catches, and their bowling lacked penetration.
-
At least 4 catches put down...Som Nom Na
-
Interesting match today... Australia's fast bowlers against Sri Lankas eccentric mix of slows + Malinga.
-
England have a lucky 6 run victory over SA
-
Lucky, Nookie? It was a tremendous fight-back from the time when SA were 123-3... and we got them all out for 165. The tension of the last overs was just what makes ODIs a great form of cricket.

Very Very Lucky!!!
-
Good cricket... but we won, so I won't argue!
-
Sri Lanka V Zimbabwe
Sri Lanka 268/0 off 42.4 overs
I think this is a record opening partnership for I day cricket or maybe just the World Cup
-
The 1st wicket went down on 282...now 302-5 off 47 overs
-
Poor Zimbabwe! I shall be glad when the group matches are over, and the top eight sides can get down to the real thing, elimination matches against sides of somewhere near the same standard.

I agree with you there,,,however you do get the odd upset
-
Here's a suggested alternative format. The top six sides (?on Test rankings?) go straight into the quarters. The remaining eight play in two elimination groups of four each, the winners of each group to enter the quarters. This would reduce the number of games, give the minnows a better chance of reaching the quarters. Top 6 teams could arrange friendlies among themselves for practice if they want to. And fewer games would have a foregone conclusion.

Sounds a bit elitist to me,sport is all about taking part. Some of the lesser nation's might enjoy playing the top players/nation's ,even if they lose. And as Nookies says "however you do get the odd upset" which all adds to the fun of watching

Any kind of a championship is elitist by definition. And I think my suggestion would give the minnows a better chance of reaching the quarters and maybe progressing further.
But, Up the Irish!
-
Will they or wont they beat the Windies to qualify??

the Windies will turn them over.........end of tournament!

England are good at living dangerously! West Indies and Bangladesh both have to lose their final matches in the group section for England to progress to the quarters, though.
-

Very True,,,another enthralling chapter to come??
-
Great fun today. Netherlands 306 (a ten Deschoate ton), with the last four wickets falling to runouts in the last four balls of the fiftieth over. Ireland 177 before a wicket fell.
-
England through to the quarters. Australia beaten at last, by Pakistan, so Pakistan go top of Group A. In a few days, the real thing starts!
-
It could have gone either way at one stage
-
India clobber the Windies!!
-
Now we're down to the real thing, with the minnows disposed of, some with honour, some without.
The quarterfinals pit Pakistan v. West Indies and India v. Australia in one half, and New Zealand v. South Africa and Sri Lanka v. England in the other. The first match is on Wednesday. I would forecast an Australia/South Africa final... with Pakistan and England being the loose cannons who could beat anyone (or lose to anyone!).
-
I'll go for India to win!!!!
-
Well, we're on record, Nookie. I'd love Sachin to get his 100th 100 in the World Cup... but I don't think India have the bowling to win.
-
True their bowlers are the weakness but they've got some big hitters
-
i will go for Wales.... i mean Sri Lanka cheergirl
-
I forecast an Australia/South Africa final; now both of them have been beaten in the quarters! Great win by New Zealand last night.
Now who will win? I'm retiring from the forecast business!
-

I'll stick with India yeahme
-
So the World Cup final will be India vs. Sri Lanka. India were lucky to get there, too, as their batting wobbled badly... Tendulkar made the highest score, but was dropped four times.
I'll back Sri Lanka to win, on the strength of their bowling... but with my forecast record, that's almost as good as giving India the game!
-
Yes ,the dropped catches cost them the match!!
-
It will be a good final,,,I still go for India but a lot hinges on how MURRALI performs as its his last game!!
-
Murrali only 50/50 to play in final
-
a 50% fit Murali is still worth his place........come on Sri Lanka
-
As I said in the first reply on this thread, my hope was for Sri Lanka to win (but at that stage I didn't think they would). I would love to see Murali put in a winning performance (but you also have to allow for Tendulkar's hundredth international ton... a Bollywood special).
-
a 50% fit Murali is still worth his place........come on Sri Lanka
Absolutely...I dont think he'll miss this one!
-
So India finally won. No wicket for Murali, no century for Tendulkar. For the Sri Lankans, a wonderful century from Jayawardene; for the Indians, fine innings by Gambhir and the captain Dhoni... and the Sri Lankan bowling didn't really make much of an impression.

Millions pour onto Indian streets to celebrate win (http://asiancorrespondent.com/51731/millions-pour-onto-indian-streets-to-celebrate-win/?utm_source=Asian+Correspondent&utm_campaign=8a1327e19f-DAILY_RSS_EMAIL_CAMPAIGN&utm_medium=email)
MUMBAI, India (AP) — As Sachin Tendulkar was hoisted onto the shoulders of celebrating India teammates, thousands of compatriots spilled onto Marine Drive next to Wankhede Stadium to join the country’s biggest party in years.
The entire boulevard was a massive throng of screaming, flag-waving fans bursting with unconfined joy and relief at India’s win in the World Cup final. Many stood on top of cars and trucks blaring their horns. Others danced to drumbeats. Still more chanted “India, India.”
Traffic was at a standstill amid a mass of humanity as firecrackers echoed in the background.
Siraj Sawardekar traveled to Mumbai especially to join the party.
“This is the only day when the whole of India is together. It is like an independence day for us,” said the 22-year-old I.T. worker. “We should try to make the most of such opportunities.”
Nothing could ruin the occasion, not even the failure of India sports icon and Mumbai resident Tendulkar to record his 100th century at his home ground.
“I came with friends and plan to be here till the sun rises,” said Gaurav Baid, 22, an engineer. “I am not bothered about individual performances or that Sachin could not get a century. Nothing is bigger than the team.”
After a 28-year wait for a second World Cup title, the scenes in Mumbai were repeated across the cricket-obsessed nation that is the financial powerbase of the sport and now world champion in the one-day format.
In a country of 1.2 billion people, there’ll be no bigger party.
Congress President Sonia Gandhi joined the crowd which flocked into the capital New Delhi, giving the v-for-victory sign to the crowd and waving the Indian flag.
In Chandigarh, near where India beat Pakistan in the semifinals on Wednesday, Yograj Singh said his son Yuvraj’s performances for India — including four man-of-the-match awards — were life-changing.
“God bless you son, you have made the nation and a father proud,” Yograj was quoted as saying. “It was my dream of 30 years to live for this moment.”
Yuvraj, who was batting with Mahendra Singh Dhoni when his captain hit a giant six to seal a six-wicket victory over Sri Lanka, expected the celebrations to go on all night.
“This is unbelievable. This is the most special one for the whole of India, for Sachin, for the whole team,” Yuvraj said. “It’s just amazing. We batted like champions.”
Prithviraj Chavan, chief minister of Maharashtra state which takes in Mumbai, said the long wait was worth it.
“This is an achievement that the country is proud of. Our boys in blue have done a stupendous job,” Chavan said.
His deputy, Ajit Pawar, said it had given “immense satisfaction to millions.”
“I am sure it will inspire everyone in the country,” Pawar said.
India ground to a halt earlier Saturday when the vast majority of the population gathered around televisions to watch the match.
Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium was packed to capacity with 33,000 lucky ticket-holders for the final. The trains that rumbled past the ground were almost empty. Several people stood on roofs overlooking the pitch, craning to get a view of the action.
The tension of the high-stakes game was even evident at a chaotic coin toss. Match referee Jeff Crowe didn’t hear the call before the coin landed and a re-throw was necessary. Sri Lanka eventually won it, no doubt causing a few hearts to flutter among India fans.
The Times of India summed up the mood with its front page headline “A Nation Holds Its Breath.”
More than 3,000 police officers and paramilitaries were on duty to prevent a repeat of the November 2008 attack by Islamist militants on several targets in the western city, which killed 166 people.
Both teams stayed in the Taj Mahal Palace hotel, rebuilt after it was partially destroyed in gun fights involving the attackers in 2008.

I think many people are very angry about this decision... especially the Irish, who are excluded. ICC looks more to 20/20 for income, and cares less about the longer forms of the game... the real game, not hit and a giggle.

With all these quotations inside quotations, I've got lost! I did not say last month that I hoped for fewer teams in the world cup; I suggested, as far as I remember, an elimination contest first, leaving only eight teams to contest the WC proper. This gives the up-and-coming associates a chance to compete, and a fair chance to reach the final stages. And it shortens the intensive part (which wasn't intensive this time). Others argued that it did the associates good to play against the big sides; I can't disagree with that, but it would be nice to find a different way of doing it.
Anyway, now Ireland, who are maybe as good as Bangladesh and Zimbabwe, are left out in the cold... and Afghanistan, who are a better side than Netherlands and Kenya, won't get a look-in.

I really don' t think cricket is for most of you. It needs slim, athletic people to play it, though there are exceptions. His best friend wouldn't have called Arjuna Ranatunga slim and athletic (he captained Sri Lanka to victory in the WC in the '90s). The champion, who would make even Nookie's 130kgs (you said it, not me) look athletic, was Dwayne Leverock (I think I've spelt him right), who played for Bermuda in the last WC... come to think of it, at 270 lbs he was much the same as you.

I think it's a disgrace to limit the "World Cup" to just 10 countries in 2015, Whilst those not being chosen may not be so good NOW who's to say that in 4 years time the competing 10 might be down on their luck.
Can hardly justify calling it a "WORLD CUP!"

A lot of people are saying the same, Nick. Especially as the ten include Zimbabwe and Bangladesh, who would certainly not be a walkover against Ireland or Afghanistan (the latter have developed rapidly since the last elimination tournament).

But who takes any notice of the Yanks? In sports terms, that is. They play a debased form of football, and a debased form of netball, which they call basketball, and a girl's game, rounders, which they call baseball.... and Indy car racing isn't a patch on F1. No wonder they gave up cricket (they were quite good in the 1790s); it must have been too complex for them.

Sri Lankan Captain Sangakaara stands down as Test Captain...
In recent years the Sri Lankans have had a habit of changing their captains rather frequently; I suppose Dilshan is next up. The Indians used to do the same, until they found Dhoni.
