2011-02-01

A chartered flight from Jordan arrived in Cairo this morning to evacuate Thais stranded in the country following days of violence, a senior Thai diplomat said Tuesday.

The flight chartered by Thai government will bring Thais who are willing to go home to Amman of Jordan first before boarding a THAI flight back to Bangkok, Foreign Ministry's spokesman Thani Thongpakdi said.

It is reported that some 40 of 80 Thais stuck in the Cairo International Airport registered to go home while the rest, mostly workers, wished to go to Europe and Libya.

The THAI flight is expected to arrive Bangkok at about 2am.

Thani said Public Health Ministry has assigned a medical team, comprising a psychologist, to go with the THAI flight in case the Thais need help.

All Thai nationals in Egypt were now safe and officials from the embassy were standing by at Cairo Airport to help stranded passengers, he said.

Meanwhile, the ministry issued a second warning that Thais should delay travel to Egypt till the situation returns to normal. Those whose visits to the country were essential should exercise great caution as the situation remained highly dangerous, it said.

Mubarak denies all charges against him

Hosni Mubarak, the former Egyptian president, has appeared in a Cairo court to face trial on charges of conspiring to kill anti-government protesters and corruption.

Incarcerated within a court cage, the former Egyptian president lying on a stretcher denied all the charges before the judge.

Alongside him in the dock were his sons Gamal and Alaa Mubarak, and the former interior minister with his six aides.

Those present in the court were families of some of the almost 850 Egyptians killed during the uprising in the hope of getting justice in post-revolution Egypt.

Al Jazeera's Sue Turton reports from Cairo.
