TOURISM
Martha part of TAT revival plan

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) will spend 10 million baht to enlist the American household diva Martha Stewart to film her TV programmes in Thailand in September to promote the country to international visitors.

The agency also plans a series of domestic travel promotions, including its first programmes specifically for women, in an attempt to revive an industry hard-hit by political unrest in April and May.

Yesterday the TAT launched the Lady Journey campaign in collaboration with United Overseas Bank (UOB), which aims to encourage more travel by working women aged 25-45.

Pensuda Priaram, deputy governor for tourism products and business, said the agency had a budget of 20 million baht for domestic campaigns. It hopes they will lift domestic trips for the year to 90 million from 87 million last year.

The five-month Lady Journey campaign aims to generate tourism revenue of 100 million baht.

The TAT will invite 50 female celebrities to travel across the country under five themes: Natural Lady, Working Lady, Sporty Lady, Trendy Lady, and Healthy Lady. They will visit 10 different destinations in 11 provinces: Suphan Buri, Kanchanaburi, Nan, Loei, Khon Kaen, Krabi, Chiang Mai, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Satun, Trat, and Nakhon Ratchasima.

It will publish 500,000 Lady Journey handbooks for free distribution. The first Natural Lady trips will be launched in early July.

Yuttachai Teyarachakul, an executive vice-president of UOB, said the campaign was a good fit with its Lady Card credit-card programme. It will offer discounts for Lady Card holders who book tours.

Mr Yuttachai said the campaign could help the bank increase the number of Lady Card holders to 200,000 by year-end from 120,000 at the present.

The TAT and 20 boutique hotels are also staging a "One Price All Destinations" promotion offering rooms at 2,000 baht per night including breakfast for two, until Sept 30. More details are available at http://www.shanghaimansion.com (http://www.shanghaimansion.com).
