Controversial World Cup ball defended by developer
Published: 2/06/2010 at 07:52 PM
Bangkok Post: Online news: Sports

Stars from England, Brazil and Italy have joined forces to criticise the controversial new ball to be used in the World Cup, but the developer insists there will be no cause for concern once the tournament gets underway in South Africa.

The Adidas 'Jabulani' ball has caused concern at training camps across the globe as the world's best players try it out ahead of the start of the World Cup on June 11.

It is believed to have an unpredictable swerving movement which makes its hard for goalkeepers and strikers to anticipate its direction in flight.

England goalkeeper David James says the ball is "horrible", Brazil forward Luis Fabiano calls it "weird" and Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon fears its "unpredictability" could ruin the World Cup.

However, Dr Andy Harland, who developed the ball at Loughborough University's Sports Technology Institute in England, said much of the criticism was due to the unfamiliar effects arising from teams playing at altitude as part of their pre-World Cup training.

"I've seen nothing that's concerned me," he told Sky Sports News. "This ball has been around since December and been used since then around the world with very few comments.

"Teams have gone to altitude and you've seen comments come out in those circumstances.

"We've said all along it would affect the ball, but it should be said whichever ball you play with at altitude is going to be affected."

The ball is billed as the roundest ever made, a quality which would make it less stable in the air if not for a series of grooves on the surface designed to reduce aerodynamic problems.

Harland said not one team had contacted him to discuss the ball and added he was not surprised by the criticism.

"It's not entirely unexpected," he said. "Before every tournament players come out and voice their opinions.

"There are no secrets about this ball. The ball is designed to allow the very best players in the world to exhibit their skills."

Police plan gambling crackdown
Published: 3/06/2010 at 12:00 AM
Bangkok Post: Newspaper section: News

Police are planning tough measures to crack down on football gambling and to deter youths from betting on matches during the month-long World Cup 2010, which kicks off on June 11.

Illegal football bookmakers would be targeted and police officers found to turn a blind eye to the gambling or who are involved themselves in gambling could face disciplinary action, Metropolitan Police Bureau commander Santan Chayanont said yesterday.

City police will also be keeping an eye on loan sharks who are expected to hit the streets during the World Cup, when gamblers, especially students, are heavily in debt as a result of betting.

"A friend of mine owned a gold shop," Pol Lt Gen Santan said.

"He ended up losing both his business and his family because of football gambling."

Authorities in other provinces are also preparing to tackle the football gambling problem as the World Cup draws near.

In Songkhla's business and tourist district of Hat Yai, Pol Col Suranart Wanawak, acting chief of district police, said his officers were compiling a list of illegal bookmakers ranging from those who have opened gambling shops to those who accept bets by phone.

In Sa Kaeo's Aranyaprathet district, immigration authorities at the Ban Khlong Luek border checkpoint searched tourists re-entering Thailand from Cambodia and found copies of online football gambling leaflets on almost every traveller. The leaflets were handed out by casinos in Cambodia.

Meanwhile, Pol Col Surachet Hakpal, head of the anti-human trafficking unit at the Crime Suppression Division, said the unit was taking action against a ring that was sending Thai women to work in a brothel in South Africa, the host of the World Cup.

A recent survey by the Wisdom Society for Public Opinion Research of Thailand found more than half (57.1%) of students who have bet on a football match said they knew they were breaking the law.

Depending on how the brackets play out after group play, I would expect Brazil, Spain, Argentina, and France to survive to the the final four. Mind you, the parity of competition has vastly drawn itself....so expect surprises in group play and even into the subsequent rounds. Troublemakers will be Portugal, Algeria, Cameroon, Slovenia, Mexico, Uruguay, Korea, and England {even if they might be a perennial favourite, I don't believe they'll fair well}.

Emotional start to World Cup, grieving Mandela missing
Published: 11/06/2010 at 08:52 PM
Bangkok Post: Online news: World

Africa's first football World Cup began in an explosion of colour and emotion at an opening ceremony in Johannesburg's Soccer City on Friday, blighted by the absence of a grief-stricken Nelson Mandela.

Fans wept openly as five planes swept over the stadium and the iconic township of Soweto before 1,500 performers piled on to the pitch for a choreographed dance routine which saw them create a map of Africa.

Mandela was missing after his great granddaughter was killed in a car crash on the way back from an eve of tournament concert but his words were interspersed in an opening song, imploring fans to "overcome all adversity".

Artists from the five African teams competing in the finals then took to the stage, including Khaled, the Algerian king of rai music, and South Africa's legendary trumpeter Hugh Masekela.

Organisers had hoped that South Africa's first black president Mandela would wow the crowds with an appearance but he was instead mourning the death of his 13-year-old granddaughter Zenani Mandela in a crash that police said was caused by a drunk driver.

Mandela is 91 and has been in frail health.

"We are sure that South Africans and people all over the world will stand in solidarity with Mr Mandela and his family in the aftermath of this tragedy," said a statement from his foundation.

"Madiba will be there with you in spirit today," it added.

The death is the latest tragedy to hit the Nobel laureate, one of whose sons died of AIDS while another was killed in a car crash during Mandela's 27 years in jail as a prisoner of the whites-only apartheid regime.

"The nation shares your loss and mourns with you, especially on the day on which our dreams and hopes come alive in the opening of the first FIFA World Cup on African soil," said South African President Jacob Zuma.

In a letter to Mandela, FIFA president Sepp Blatter said he had been stunned "to hear the unspeakably tragic news."

Mandela's lobbying was seen as the crucial factor when the world football federation awarded South Africa the right to host the tournament.

"It was his dream to unite a nation through sport that has been brought to life again today," said a front-page editorial in The Star.

The main headline of the mass-selling Daily Sun read simply: "Do It For Him!" on top of a picture of Mandela clutching the famous gold trophy.

Ever since it was awarded the tournament six years ago, South Africa has had to fend off accusations that its lack of infrastructure and high crime rate meant it could not stage an event of such magnitude.

The hosts hope that a successful tournament with world renowned names such as Argentina's Lionel Messi, Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo and England's Wayne Rooney will overturn perceptions of Africa as the hopeless continent -- a place regarded by many as synonymous with war, famine and AIDS.

All the stadiums and World Cup infrastructure projects have been completed on time although crime is still a worry. Journalists have been robbed at gunpoint and thieves have even stolen cash from the rooms of the Greek team.

The first of the tournament's 63 matches, between South Africa's Bafana Bafana team and Mexico, was to kick off after the opening ceremonies at Soccer City, a showpiece arena rebuilt to resemble an African cooking pot, lying just a long kick from Soweto.

The one-time sprawling network of tin shacks -- now home to millionaires and Africa's largest shopping mall -- was the frontline of the battle against apartheid which ended in 1994 with the election of Mandela as president.

"I never thought this day would come. The games have started, nothing can stop us now. Bafana Bafana must win," said Martha Shange from Johannesburg, one of the first to enter when the gates opened.

Nearly 85,000 supporters will be packed in to watch the opening match which promises to be an ear-splitting affair with the vuvuzela plastic horn a must-have accessory.

Cape Town will later host France and Uruguay.

Roads around the stadiums have been declared off limits and bomb squads swept the seats before the gates open.

In a briefing to officers, police commissioner Bheki Cele warned the eyes of the world would be on them. He said 34,000 police would be deployed around the stadium, with 10,000 reservists at other public areas.

"We are on high alert," said Cele. Some 20 African heads of state and US Vice President Joe Biden were attending the opening.

is this the best we have got ???????? Emile "The Goal Machine"`` Heskey is an English international and the only donkey currently playing for Aston Villa as a hopelessly awful striker scoring -14 goals in a season. His mistake against France in the previous world cup leading to their second goal, denying England an easier route to the final sealed his "donkey" status and more recently, a lack of guile leading to England's best defender Ferdinand missing out on the world cup, cemented Emile's donkey status. which Born in Leicester, he started playing for Leicester in 1994 where he surprisingly scored a couple of goals. He made his £11 million move to Liverpool[1] in 2000. Yeah, I know, £11 million. Anyway, after Liverpool realised that he was awful (it only took them 4 years) he moved to Birmingham City FC in 2004 and then Wigan Pathetic in 2006 and then to Aston Villa in 2009.

He made his England debut in 1999 agaisnt Hungry in a 1-1 draw in which he (to the surprise of many) nearly scored. He didn't, but it was close. He retired from international football after Euro 2004 and former team-mate and England striking partner Michael Owen was not very sympathetic, saying,"Good riddance - he really is absolute bollocks." Coupled with being constantly slagged off by the press and the emergence of Mr Potato Head up front he thought it was best to call it a day. and now hes back  oldmanwithstick

Country pride because I'm a Yank, but also the USA team overcame 2 game winning wrongly disqualified goals to finish #1 in the C Bracket.

Hopefully we'll get rid of the bad Refs and not have hadicaps imposed on us.

That being said, from an American standpoint it is a really sorry state of affairs that a team that kissed their sister (game ended in a tie) two out of 3 games is the top team of that bracket.   happybar

My predictions for England and USA.

England to lose to Germany 2-0. If England cannot outscore Algeria, what the hell is it doing in the world cup?

USA to take Ghana 3-1 then lose to Uruguay in the next match. If Team USA can get pass Uruguay, It will change that team emotionally, possibly enough to make it to the semi-finals, where it will have run out of steam.

I feel confident Argentina will take the cup. Nederland surge was based on the fact that they were not facing much serious competition. Watch out for Dark Horse Chile.

Dutch favourites against Slovakian spirit
Published: 28/06/2010 at 04:38 PM
Bangkok Post: Online news: Sports

The Netherlands play surprise package Slovakia in a round of 16 match here on Monday, wary of a team spirit that saw the unheralded side beat defending World Cup champions Italy in the group stage.

The Dutch, two-time finalists in the 1974 and 1978 World Cups, were themselves unbeaten in the group phase, beating Denmark 2-0, Japan 1-0 and Cameroon 2-1.

World Cup debutants Slovakia drew 1-1 with New Zealand and lost 2-0 to group-winners Paraguay before trumping Italy 3-2 to spectacularly claim their runners-up spot.

"Slovakia will be tough," Dutch striker Robin van Persie warned. "They showed really good spirit and hung in there against Italy and it was a great result for their country.

"So far, it's looking good for us, but we can still improve on bits and pieces."

Dutch coach Bert van Marwijk added: "This is an opponent we must not underestimate. We cannot be nonchalant."

Although the Dutch notched up three group phase wins -- a feat matched only by Argentina, van Marwijk warned they could ill afford to let teams back into games through sloppy play, as was the case against Cameroon.

"That period of negligence we had, we cannot afford that again," he said. "It's a bit of a lesson for the next match."

Slovakian striker Robert Vittek, who scored two goals in his team's win over Italy, said that the game against the Azzurri had "really pushed the limits of Slovak football".

"Beforehand we couldn't have dreamt about this, I'm so happy, we showed everything that we're capable of in achieving this," he said.

"The Dutch are clear favourites but we will try to give them a hard time. As newcomers we have nothing to lose."

The Netherlands were boosted by the return against Cameroon of star winger Arjen Robben, who made his South African World Cup bow as a late substitute after missing their opening two matches with a hamstring injury.

If there were any lingering doubts over his injury, Robben erased them in emphatic style with a trademark contribution to the Netherlands' winning goal, slamming a shot against the post with Klaas-Jan Huntelaar burying the rebound.

"We made it clear at the start that we would be taking this tournament one challenge at a time, and now we will focus on Slovakia and Slovakia alone," said Robben. "I'm already looking forward to it."

The Bayern Munich player will likely come off the bench for a half.

The winner of the second round match at the Moses Mabhida Stadium here face a tough quarter-final against the winner of the Brazil v Chile play-off.

KEY TO MATCH

Arjen Robben v Marek Hamsik

After Arjen Robben's delightful cameo against Cameroon, the Bayern Munich winger stands a good chance of playing a significant chunk of the game against Slovakia, who conceded five goals in their group phase. Slovakia's captain and playmaker Marek Hamsik pulls the strings for his team in midfield and will have to get them moving forward as they did in their shock victory over defending champions Italy to make any inroads into a Dutch team oozing class up front.

Five cleaners who worked at England's luxury World Cup hotel in South Africa have been jailed for three years for stealing underwear from the players.

England players faced Germany in World Cup

It is not known which players had items stolen

The defendants were also convicted of taking a USA shirt that an England player received after the teams' group match and a medal awarded by FIFA.

Police spokeswoman Junior Metsi said very little cash was stolen - about £500 - and the thieves seemed more interested in souvenirs.

The thefts at the hotel in the town of Rustenburg were not reported to police until Saturday.

Ms Metsi said officers solved the case within a day after they searched the homes of hotel staff.

The following day, a special World Cup court convicted five hotel workers over the thefts.

They were sentenced to three years in prison and fined 6,000 rand (about £525).

England's World Cup HQ was a state-of-the-art sports complex and hotel built by the Bafokeng tribe of northern South Africa and completed shortly before the tournament began.

The Bafokeng also own the Rustenburg stadium where some of the games in the competition were played.

Ms Metsi would not name the players whose items were taken.

"Everything that was stolen was recovered and they (the thieves) are now behind bars," she said.

England made it to the round of 16, but got knocked out on Sunday after losing to Germany 4-1.

A Frank Lampard goal was disallowed by the referee even though TV replays showed it had gone over the line.

I met a fairy.

"I want to live forever," I said.
"Sorry," said the fairy, but I am not allowed to grant that type of wish.
"Fine," I said, "Then I want to die when England wins the World Cup."

"You crafty bastard !" said the fairy.

The game was very interesting to watch, it was very intensive game.

The 90 minutes ended up with 0:0 but they got time extention of 30 minutes.

The Dutch played dirty game with lots of faults on the Spain (hitting one of them in the chest made him leave the game for the first 1 hour of the game) and much much more..

Also the Spanish weren't so sportive by the end of the game.

Both were frustrated with the results and the time running out without any goal!!  letitallout

Both had a problem with a very taugh judge .

But overall it was a fair judge and a fascinating game, Spain deserve their championship and their players were super defensive and attractive. footballscarf

The best team on the day won. Disappointed with Holland for adopting the"If it moves kick it strategy" I was hoping they would win but that wasnt to be. From what i've read it seem Johan Cruyff shares my sentiments. Lets hope for the sake of the game they return to play the way they have in the past. There are enough "donkey like teams" around as it is! character2

North Korean football team shamed in six-hour public inquiry over World Cup

North Korea's football team has been shamed in a six-hour public inquisition and the team's coach has been accused of "betraying" the reclusive leader's heir apparent following their failure at the World Cup, according to reports.

By Barney Henderson
Published: 12:15PM BST 30 Jul 2010

The entire squad was forced onto a stage at the People's Palace of Culture and subjected to criticism from Pak Myong-chol, the sports minister, as 400 government officials, students and journalists watched.

The players were subjected to a "grand debate" on July 2 because they failed in their "ideological struggle" to succeed in South Africa, Radio Free Asia and South Korean media reported.

The team's coach, Kim Jong-hun, was reportedly forced to become a builder and has been expelled from the Workers' Party of Korea.

The coach was punished for "betraying" Kim Jong-un - one of Supreme Leader Kim Jong-il's sons and heir apparent.

The country, in its first World Cup since 1966, lost all three group games – including a 7-0 defeat to Portugal.

The broadcast of live games had been banned to avoid national embarrassment, but after the spirited 2-1 defeat to Brazil, state television made the Portugal game its first live sports broadcast ever.

Following ideological criticism, the players were then allegedly forced to blame the coach for their defeats.

Only two players avoided the inquisition - Japanese-born Jong Tae-se and An Yong-hak, who flew straight to Japan after the tournament.

However, media in South Korea said the players got off lightly by North Korean standards.

"In the past, North Korean athletes and coaches who performed badly were sent to prison camps," a South Korean intelligence source told the Chosun Ilbo newspaper.
