Title: Alcoholism
Post by: Admin on July 22, 2009, 11:28:34 AM
Alcoholism
Source: Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alcoholism

Alcoholism is a powerful craving for alcohol which often results in the compulsive consumption of alcohol, an addiction. The cause of this craving is heavily debated, but the most popular beliefs are that it is (1) a chemical or nutritional imbalance, (2) a genetic predisposition, (3) a neurological effect caused by runaway learning mechanisms, or (4) an inability to curb one's own desire for enjoyment. As a result, the etiology and nature of alcoholism are both currently being debated within the medical and scientific communities and the very definition of alcoholism is a part of that debate.

Some believe that alcoholism is a biological disease; at the moment some are more willing to accept that the problem has a biological basis (as opposed to just being a problem of weak willpower or poor moral character) if the word disease is attached. Those who oppose the term disease don't necessarily believe that the problem is a willpower issue because there are many physical conditions (broken bones, blood clots, and embolisms, for example) that are not disease related.

Not a very good selection in the poll.............I personally don't drink alcohol every day but I would guess over a week the average would be three large bottles per day.

Lets be more realistic & say I drink 5 days a week.....that averages out just above 4 big bottles Chang each session..The odd times I do exceed that quantity,i quickly lose what little common sense I have..

OK, now I realize I am not the smartest guy around, but I can use my fingers, toes and member to count to 21  happy2.  I look at the poll:

Question: How many beers you drink/day?
1 Large Bottle  2 (33.3%)
2 Large Bottles  0 (0%)
3 Large Bottles  2 (33.3%)
4 Large Bottles  1 (16.7%)
I drink on social occasions only  1 (16.7%)
I don't drink alcohol at all !  0 (0%)

Total Voters: 5

There are 2 (1 Large Bottle), 2 (3 Large Bottle), 1 (4 large bottle), and 1 (social).  Having graduated from college with a BS in Math, I count 6, but total votes is 5.   confused3

also there are only 5 posters here (my advanced math skills came in handy to figure that out).   party10

Maybe I need to go to 4 large beers to understand the poll numbers.   party9

you touch a very sensitive subject here.
most farang living in Thailand are drinking very often and usually on daily basis but still don't call themselves alcoholists.
are they? are we?

I drink a glass or maximum 2 of whiskey and still don't call myself an alcoholist.
am I lying to myself? maybe.
Will come the time I will pay for this bad habit? I don't know.

but what I do know is that it is very hard to pass a day without this small drink to relax my mind and get a good sleep.
