Hi,
My 1-year driving license is about to run out, and I need to renew it to 5-year. Since I need a residence cert from the immigration, where can I get that? I live in Buriram now, but when I got my driving licenses (car and motorbike) I was living in Jomtien.
Thank´s for response from you guys that been here a while :)

You can renew you DL at any DLT in Thailand. Kap Choeng Immigration in KC can give you a CR depending on your visa status or see if your local DLT will accept this letter from your local police as Buriram the local bib's are known for this and it would save you 120 km drive each way.

Thank´s, I think we are taking a trip to Kap Choeng Immigration then. I have Non-B VISA, so it shouldn't be a problem with my VISA. Could be nice to see something else here around as well ;D

Don't go to the police station. We waited for two hours in what seemed to be a holding cell and the guy seemed surprised that we wanted a confirmation of address. However he made a good job of it, took smeared and unusable fingerprints plus ฿800.- off me. (Buriram). The guy had a gun, what was I supposed to do?
TIT, I quite like my little trips to Chong Chum market every few weeks.

If one has difficulty reading the numbers on he "color blind test" yet is not color blind, how is that handled. Is there a form to take to a physician for verification of "non colorblindness?" Wife says just go back next day with tea money, but I want it done right. Anyone encounter this? Thanks in advance.
-
Don't go until after your current 1 year has run out otherwise you will be issued with another 1 year!

Took my mate to the police station the other day. No problems. Residence letter for 100 baht. In and out, of an office, in 30 mins.
Buriram transport dept accept the letter from the police.
Don't forget the medical certificate.
-
I also obtained certificate of residence from Buriram Police Station with no issue. Quick in and out and readily accepted at Buriram DLT. My fingerprints were also taken.

OK< to put it another way, is there a medical certification that covers the color blind test when you show up with current IDL and USA DL to get first TDL?
-
I don't understand. If you are not colour blind then you will not have a problem.
Tests and other things that you have to do to get a licence seem to vary.
As an example, I have never had to watch any video or complete any written test. I know others that have.
-
Starman the problem comes with reading the numbers in the circles of dots on the machine. Some people just can't see the numbers, like me. But I am not color blind if given other tests. I just wonder if there are options.

For the Colour blindness test you stand at about 3 meters from a circle with various points of different sizes and colours. The instructor indicates a point and you have to say the colour.

DD,it so true!
-
DD,if you are really worried then here is what you can do.
Go to BRY test centre. It is just next to the private hospital. Sign up for a course of lessons. Pay the fee for the course ,2500 baht, and they will get you a licence.
-
OK, not like this one then... Good. Thanks for the info!!

In Prakhonchai they use an actual traffic light................ now, that is imaginative.
-
In Buriram they use the traffic light also. Minor problem is that it is so old that the colours are faded. Until you have seen both the red and the Amber it is difficult to tell the colour it is meant to be.
-
I read in the Bangkok Post today that Non Thais can only have a driving licence if they are under 80 kilos. The powers that be reckon fat people ( especially farangs ) have problem steering their car as there big fat gut gets in the way .

Hi Dutchdog,
I got mine last September and so assuming nothing has changed.
When you go into the Police Station there is a reception desk who will direct you to the correct office. If nothing has changed you go up a floor and the office was along the corridor. I didn't have to wait at all.
My Wife was with me and took her passport, house book and ID. I had my passport. Cop asked what we needed the COR for and hen responded for DL and to buy a truck in my Nepalese, he asked nothing more.
Copies taken of all documents. Your finger prints will be taken. I was in and out in about 15 minutes. I gave 300THB which my wife told me was to much. At that time when I asked how much was told 'up to you'
I haven't picked up in any recent postings that anything has changed and they seem well set up for the request.
-
Thanks very much Freddy, ill go off to police on Monday and let you know the outcome if its changed tc
-
I too was told that you should (or can) do this at the police station, seemed a better option than going to Kap Choeng and paying ฿500 even if it is supposed to be free. Got there at 8am. Two hours later the guy turned up and after much farting around took my (smudged) finger prints (!) and asked for ฿800 so he could buy beer for himself. Up to you but I certainly won't be doing that again.
-
I guess different people have different experiences. Guess it depends who's on duty! I can only speak from my own experience and my visit was trouble free. Officer on duty was polite and efficient. Hope you have the same experience Dutchdog.

Not much choice now. It is my understanding that Kap Cheong have stopped doing residence letters.

Not quite correct,,,,If you turn with an official letter requesting one they do them.

Someone in the Government department that it is needed for......ie Driving Licence & Taxation centre if you need to renew or apply for a driving licence.

I have the same problem, but they only have colours and no numbers in them to read, you should be ok dont worry.

Numbers are to be introduced along with a few other things in the near future

Why.. Aslong as you understand the traffic light sequence why a colour blind test.. So if your colour blind your not allowed to drive.. How daft is that..
-
Not that anybody takes any notice, but there are places where there is only (no red or amber) a green light indicating that you may turn left whilst straight on drivers have red. I believe that there are some railway crossings also that only show a red light when necessary.
Not that it matters.

Most developed countries have a colourblind test.........Fail it & You can't drive!!

Yes. Buriram Police Station.
Well went to police station buriram today, first I went alone and was told that my thai wife should be with me so had go home and get her then off to police station, he asked her a couple of questions and with all my paperwork in order was given the cert of residence in about 30mins (with finger printed using the standard stamp pad) and payment of 100baht so off to get thai licence on Wednesday thanks for all your help
-
well arrived at Drivers license Dept at 8.30am Wednesday, had a queue of thais all the way down the stairs to ground floor, finally got to counter nice lady checked my paperwork and showed me where to wait, after a few minutes of a thai instructor showing 30-40 people what is involved in the test, he processed the first 20 which gave me an idea what was required (as my thai is still limited) 2nd lot called up including me, first traffic lights (red red yellow green red etc) then the pedals push down green on board when red press brake, the hold strings and level up the sticks, then color test face on screen with colors left and right of eyes, I could not pick up the yellow but could see instructors hand on buttons so when pressed yellow button I called yellow, all passed then of to counter 1, I forgot to sign my paperwork and was told quite rudely to go away but a thai guy explained to me wat was needed, signed and returned then waited, finally got called up, my mistake as I was wearing at t-shirt (my usual attire) and the lady was asking people to give me a shirt, 3 ladies came over with jackets but to small and then a thai guy gave me his shirt, bit small but did the job, after a few minutes of the lady trying to get me in position (im 6'2) photo taken gave shirt back to man with 100baht (all the thais clapped gud show of respect for help) paid 205baht for 2 year licence and out in approx 1hr all done
-

Does it say something like TEMPORARY at the top.
-
Yep is says TYPE Temporary car
-
Yep is says TYPE Temporary car
Just keep in mind you can not use this license outside Thailand as its only a Temp. Only the 5 year DL is accepted. If you have any thoughts of driving outside Thailand you may want to go back to your LTD and get this corrected to an actual 1 year DL. I have driven and rented autos in the USA and the 5 year dl is accepted.
-
Is it an error????
What is the Thai year on the licence?
-
thai dates issue date 1/july/ 2558 expire date 1/july/2560 (2 years) also my Australian lic is valid to 2017 if I ever go back there but I doubt it.
