Title: Boring Posts
Post by: urleft on July 24, 2017, 10:35:45 PM
How do you recommend BE handle posts/topics you don't like?

My view is STFU and move on.   Unless that post specifies you (or your family),  go elsewhere and ignore it.

Oops, this is a hurtful post.  Expect me to be desiplined shortly.

It is a public forum after all, and thankfully we all have different interests, sense of humour, thresholds of pain etc etc.

I expect most posts are interesting to only a handful of readers each time. That's normal I would think.

There are several ongoing threads on the Forum that I just can't be bothered reading, so I mark them as read and move on. Isn't that what everyone does ? No big deal.

The "my dick is bigger than your dick" posts are mildly entertaining though.

The reason I started this post was BE seems to be dying.  Which is sad as there is a lot of good local information to be had.  Even my best buddy helped me find casings, I appreciate him doing that.

I also believe banter can be fun.  Yes, I can be rightfully accused of trolling Nookie, such as with the ladder photo op (which I still hope he schedules so we can have an impromptu gathering).  This would also help Ruangsangthai that is specifically targeting support to us expats (and I appreciate that).

So I hope we can liven up this board, and if there are disagreements, TFB, ignore, make fun of, and get over it.

If that is ridicule I am missing the context.  Please explain.

And I am serious here.  I do not understand the "sneers" comment.

Also what is interesting is that almost 200 views and only 3 votes.  How can BE make an informed Judgement if no one replies?  They will have to go with their non Native English Language assessment.  That is not a hit to BE, it is just the way it is.  I want BE to succeed, they have done a lot of good for me.

So tell it like it is.  So far BE has let this boring, annoying, combative, etc. thread run, there is hope.

Actually membership and post count has increased in the previous 2 months.

Great, and I hope to see BE activity.  However the a few days ago for a 24 hour period there were less than 10 posts and no new topics.  From my viewpoint I would like to see BE get about 100 postings per 24 hour period.  I would bet that more posts will cause more replies and should be encouraged, boring or otherwise.

Many of the more entertaining posts come from people that just come for the winter months, it would be interesting to get statistics for number of posts on a monthly basis... anyone?
At the moment... it's raining and will continue to do so for a day or two... so it's back to pork pie making and wiring up the extension... now that IS boring

I gues the problem is not so much boring posts as bored members.

Anyone who could find time to read 100 posts on a single forum in a single day clearly needs to find something to do with themselves.

Of course more members will result in more posts but I don't see the point in posting for the sake of posting. That would be boring.

I happen to enjoy cooking (and eating).  Made sausage gravy and hashbrowns for breakfast.  Now you want boring, I had to investigate the US Tax code yesterday on implications of the US GVT paying my daughter (I have yet to figure out why they are doing that), that was 2 hours I will never get back.

I am doing what I can to make this forum relevant.  I made offers to admin (no response), and to Mod (please stop saying bad things).

The last BE member according to the forum is pjsomers, registered July 10.  So for over a month this forum could not get a single new applicant (other than spammers).

I really like BE, it has helped me multiple times.  But I fear it is dying and want to make it relevant.

How can us members overcome boring posts while keeping the site active?  To me one solution is that if you find a post boring, ignore it, block it, do not read it, and don't complain about it being posted, because Mod is listening and will delete the thread because you find it boring.

Also note, about 600 views and 6 votes.  Obviously only .1% of posters care.

Try looking at http://www.surinfarang.com/forum/ there is even less activity there.
I generally have the feeling that local forums are pretty much moribund in Thailand. The one I originally started with has disappeared
Skilled diplomat that I am, I won't mention the name of the person on this forum that bullies and sneers whenever he can (gone a bit quieter recently) and nearly had me abstaining completely form using the forum. Which of course was what he wanted.
Newbies especially are targetted, apart from my own case I remember the guy that proudly reported about the itinerant dyer that he had seen and immediately got the message that newbies needn't express themselves.
So two things: 1. Why do people write and answer posts at all? In my case, I initiate most of my posts because I want to learn something. I answer posts that I am interested in as it obliges me to summon up what I might know or think I know about the subject. Putting it out there is also a way of learning. Most people don't think that way and they hesitate to make fools of themselves... which in my case is obviously irrelevant as I have been making a fool of myself all my life and don't care.
2. Mr. Urleft, I propose that you start to make statistics referring to the number of posts per month for the last year or two. I'm pretty sure that we are in the summer doldrums at the moment, wait until November or so, I suspect that posts pick up then, as people start to arrive to avoid the northern winters.
Title: Re: Boring Posts

I generally try to stay out of the exchanges that become personal and/or insulting. For my part, I have a pretty dry sense of humour and I'm certainly not adverse to taking the pi*s or having it taken out of me. There are times however where some of the comments and reactions on the forum are beyond that and IMHO amount to nothing less than bullying.
I think it quite possible that many of the non active members may have witnessed this and choose not to actively take part because of it.

For my part I post to seek new information and to share information that I think may be of use to others. If a topic interests me I may take part, if it doesn't I don't bother. What isn't important to me may be of great importance to another and I try to respect that.

Exactly right, Freddy.

The last time I posted something that another member disagreed wirh I was called a liar, told I have my head up my arse and was accused of being involved in a business that I clearly have no connection with.

For me the bottom line is this. It should be perfectly possible for mature adults to have a differing opinion on any subject and share that point of view, but to do so without being critical of another's position and certainly without insults.
Nothing more to say on this subject.

Believe it or not, I do not try to attack to attack BE members.  If they want to engage in reasonable discussion I am all for that.  But at least one expat here hunts out my posts to disparage me, and a 2nd is climbing on.  OK, yes I do call out Nookie, but he deserves it, just ask him.

One thing to look at on this forum is the past posts vrs current posts.  Admin used to post a lot to get interest in this site, now they fail to post.  While I did not look I think Admin's last new post was to try to sell something, and Mod's new topic was to re-start funny photos after he screwed up and deleted the whole thread.

And I will probably get banned for this but Mod and Admin have no interest in promoting this site.  Which is too bad as I want both this forum and BE to succeed.

Please do not say things you don't know about. Also not good to tell on the forum about what happens in private messages.

We have our job and our family. We try our best to take care of Buriram Expats. We promote every day with our businesses. We meet many expat and invite them to join.

We read old post and can see some members not happy about the old admin. About he doesn't understand the jokes and deleted posts. We don't want this so try to keep posts.

We never delete something by our idea. We only delete if reported more than one time. If we don't understand everything we know an English speaker to help explain.

I deleted foto thread by accident. I started a new one and said sorry.

Since we started this wrbsite membership and posts are up.

Please let us try together and stop saying bad things about the admin team.

Thank you.

I love BE and have been helped by some of the information provided by members and as a result, in some cases, I have made personal friends.
Lets try to respect everyone's right to comment and try to stay away from personal attacks.  I am not perfect and I guess no one is as BE members.
Most of us have reached retirement age and time is ticking away before we fall of the perch.  Let our last days on earth be constructive and full of respect for our like minded brothers on this forum. Let us leave our emotional baggage behind in the countries we came from and remember the reasons we are here and embrace our new home.

I have received PMs in one day, supporting my view point. This may indicate to what extent people are afraid or reluctant to express their views.
For one person in particular, he whose name shall not be mentioned, the point of this forum is to be proved right, to give evidence of his moral and intellectual superiority in all cases.
Sharing information, and of course he has been here for a long time and knows a lot, seems to be a secondary motivation.
Urleft: I have tried to support you on various occasions but your last postings concerning Nookiebear (very unfunny}and the one concerning Admin (totally unjustified) were unnecessary and one wonders why you posted it at all. I did explain to you why it was pretty unlikely that you would ever get Admin privileges. It's bloody well impossible now and you have manoeuvred yourself into a corner.
Adam: no it wasn't you that was being referred to, I think.
Oh well, I too will just leave this forum to Nookiebear and SM as well as the occasional newbie that naively comes here looking for information and either getting no response or a put down.

Davu,

I am taking my time and piece mealing my response.

Please show me your same level of indignation when Nookie referred to me (and all Americans) as a "septic"  I do not recall you supporting me in those instances.

Did you know that picture was posted here years ago?  Did you know one of his countrymen reposted the picture claiming how spot on and funny it was?  That picture was downloaded on this forum over 100 times.  However, with the forum issues that exchange has been lost forever, so I reposted the picture when reminded with a septic post.  You have your individual opinion, but lots of us that dealt with the agitator and instigator extraordinaire (and he was proud of it) found it totally appropriate.  However, he has toned down his posting the last few years, probably after he was counseled about it.
Title: Re: Boring Posts

I think one of the main problems is that urleft and a few others do not fully understand British humour (more difficult to understand in the written form, as it sometimes comes across as a personal attack). Our humour is based on sarcasm and the art if "winding up", Nookie being very good at this.

Calling an American a septic is not derogatory it is actually a term if endearment if anything. It comes as I am sure you know from rhyming slang. Septic Tank - Yank! That's it. You would probably prefer it to be changed to Sherman, but we would have to go into a time machine and get the cockneys to come up with it back in the 40's.
Now you may not like it, but that is you taking it as a personal attack which it is not.

Most of the things I post are always tongue in cheek, but seem to be taken the wrong way.

Let's all get on. If not, the next thing we know if this continues, is the leader of the free world will be saying that some white supremacists wearing swasticas and Nazi paraphernalia are decent people!!

Thank you Mod, I mean that sincerely.  I applogize for posting, but in British humor those were terms of endearment to Amercans.  I hope it is allowable to post the links were those definitions/language were quoted:  (take MOD's post as a warning about what can be seen at the links):

http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Septic (http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Septic)

Again it is misunderstood. Not all Brits use terms like this as derogatory.

If I met Nookie again, I would likely greet him with "Alright Nookie you fat bastard". Does that mean I am questioning his parenthood, No, obviously not.

But if urleft, posted a link to a dictionary it would seem that I am not being nice.

Do you see? It is purely a matter of intent and humour. Which urleft seems to be lacking any sense of.

End of discussion as it is impossible to have a sensible one with this man.

Agreed Adam. Also, if you check the link it is only one person's opinion.

Sadly some people cannot accept anything a true unless there is a link.

I was told I have my head up my arse when I posted that it is illegal to drive a car with headlights on during the day, just because I could not provide a link.
