Title: Disappearing Wine
Post by: urleft on April 23, 2018, 02:09:55 PM

I am a connoisseur of wine, I am very picky on the kind of box it comes in.     party9

All jokes aside, boxes of wine are disappearing from the store shelves.  There are none in Tops and Makro, Big C had a few the other day.  In Pattaya I find the same trend.  It seems there are some 3L boxes, priced about 1000 baht, which is what the 5L boxes used to cost.  But again, very little stock.

I did see some 5L of Monte Claire at The Villa for 1600 baht, but that's the only 5L I've seen in the past month.

Good one that 1st sentence @Urleft .

You are absolutely right, the "Fruit" wines as they are called must have had a massive Tax Increase for them to so rapidly disappear from the Market. At 9xx THB for a 5 liter was oke, but I am not willing to pay 15xx++ THB for the same amount.

We were (for Songkran) in Singapore and fortunately there real wine is still quite affordable with cheaper but still good wine at around 18 SGD (around 414 THB) per 700ml. Had some very nice Cote du Rhone there, which in Thailand are around 1500-2000 THB per Bottle but in Singapore (only) 700 THB.

I have an Army Buddy coming to visit, that means stock up on cheap booze, beer and wine.  He upscaled his life to a house just off the beach  near Laguna CA, so the last time he bought me a beer it was Milwaukee's Best, this time I got Fosters (maybe some Aussies will say "Same Same").  I had beer, he "sipped" (maybe guzzled) wine.  So I was on the search for some 5L boxes for him when I noted the shortage.

Bought a 5L box of Franzia Sunset Blush for my Cuz last month, cost me $12.30 USD, no tax, about 400 baht.  So Yes, 1600 baht for a 5L box of rotgut seems excessive.

Well Big C had a 5L white for under 1000 baht so got one.  The Villa had 4 boxes of a 5L red, they now have 3 for just over 1000 Baht each.

Tesco Lotus on the North Road had the most variety, probably 7 different brands, but the stock level was minimal.

The Villa's stock looked like they got a pallet of some African Wine so it was OK, but that was the only brand they had.

My Bud should only be here for several days so hopefully that will suffice.  But then I can alway buy some fruit juice and spike it with Thai Whiskey.

I bought a 5l African Wine at the Villa for under 1000 baht.  However, it started leaking forcing me rebottle.

All said and done it appear the boxed wines are spiking in price.
