Title: Moto GP in Buriram 2017 ?
Post by: smoooth2 on August 08, 2016, 11:21:05 AM
Consistent discussions and rumours are rife regarding the possibility of Buriram Chang Race Circuit hosting a round of the 2017 Moto GP calendar.

So many motorsport magazines and journalists seem to think it will happen, yet I've not read anyone willing to confirm 100% that it's a definate goer.

The 2017 race calendar has been published, without Buriram included, but the strong rumours still persist that Buriram will be squeezed into the program somehow.

Does anyone know any more about all this ?

I know that the vast majority of Thai's probably have no idea that Moto GP is the worlds premier bike racing category, and therefore would likely show little interest in the event, however, it would still be a fabulous event for Buriram to host with a huge global TV audience in the 100's of millions.

I hope it happens. Not only because of the exciting spectacle, but it would also be a huge bonanza for local business owners.

It is in connection with the Indonesian leg. Looks like their circuit will not be ready. Moto GP still want the race to be held in the area and have been looking at Buriram.

I have been to the two WSBK events at Buriram Circuit and have enjoyed both, a good track for motorcycle racing. My understanding as regards to Moto GP or F1 racing being conducted at the circuit still revolves around the provision of the Medical facilities in the city, or within a time span to enable Air evac to transfer casualties to a facility capable of handling ALL medical emergencies.
Maybe not next year but still hoping.

Hope I am proved wrong and the circus comes to town.

The global franchise owner for MotoGP has announced that 2018 season will be increased up from the current 18 races to 21.

Finland has already been chosen for 1 of the extra races on offer.

4 countries, including Thailand, are vying for the remaining 2 races.

Yesterday the Thai Govt allocated 300m baht to pay the franchise owner for 3 years, if Thailand is lucky enough to be selected. Official application must be finalised in 4 weeks time.

No announcement on when the franchise owner of MotoGP will make a decision after applications have closed.

Buriram International Race Circuit will be the host venue if Thailand gets the nod.

MotoGP attracts a global TV audience of 600 million on race weekend. Who said Buriram was a quiet little Isaan sleeper ?

When the Superbikes were here 2 weeks ago, most accommodation venues in town were booked solid from Wednesday night through to the following Monday morning. Terrific boost for the local economy, and of course MotoGP will attract a similiar, if not larger, crowd.

Fingers crossed. Go Buriram !! ..... ummm .... suppose that should be Go Thailand.

Thailand is reported to be targeting a place on the 2018 MotoGP World Championship calendar.

The country has been linked with MotoGP ever since the Chang International Circuit in Buriram (pictured) held its first World Superbike event in 2015.

"I can say that it is a possibility that Thailand joins the calendar in 2018. But only a possibility," a Dorna spokesman recently told Crash.net.

But now the Bangkok Post states that money has been set aside by the government to 'bid' for MotoGP:

"The cabinet on Tuesday allocated 300 million baht [8.7million USD] to pay for the right to organise MotoGP, the world's motorcycle racing championship, for three years [2018-2020].

"The Tourism and Sports Ministry proposed the project as Dorna Sports Group, the rights owner, planned to increase the number of host countries of the popular championship to 21 next year from 18.

"Finland was already additionally included and the rights owner would choose two more countries. Thailand, Kazakhstan, Indonesia and Hungary are vying for the right."

Sports Authority Thailand (SAT), and Dorna Sports (MotoGP global owner), have confirmed that Thailand will host a round of MotoGP in 2018

Buriram Chang International Race Circuit will be the venue.

SAT have indicated that the date will be 5-7 Oct 2018

Dorna Sports have yet to positively confirm this as the race date.

What a fantastic coup for Thailand. MotoGP is the premium race category for motorbikes. Equivilent to F1 for cars. Will attract an enormous crowd, and have global TV live coverage.

I know maybe a little late but the official MotoGp Anouncement below;

Thailand confirmed on the MotoGP? calendar

MotoGP? will visit Buriram from 2018-2020

Thailand has been confirmed on the MotoGP? calendar from 2018. Sakon Wannapong, the Governor of Sport Authority of Thailand, and Carmelo Ezpeleta, Dorna Sports CEO, signed the contract in a ceremony in Bangkok chaired by his excellency General Tanasak Patimapragorn, Deputy Prime Minister of Thailand, with Pongpanu Svetarundra, Ministry of Tourism and Sports, also in attendance for the historic occasion. More than 200 members of the media gathered at the event in a new market for the World Championship, with interest in Thailand incredibly high as they prepare to welcome MotoGP?.

Thailand joins the calendar
With the deal now finalised, the Thai Grand Prix will be staged in Buriram, north east of Bangkok, from 2018 - with the initial deal sealing it as a fixture until 2020.

General Tanasak Patimapragorn, Deputy Prime Minister of Thailand: ?We are happy that MotoGP is coming to Thailand and you can see that this is a very good deal for everyone, and all the stakeholders in motorsport fully support it. Even though they are competitors, they have all come together and would like MotoGP to happen in Thailand. We would like to say thank you the circuit of Buriram and to Carmelo, and thank you to the media. There are a lot of media here today, and that means that a lot of people will be very interested in the race. It is a challenge for Thailand to be the host of MotoGP, but beyond the circuit, it will also be good for infrastructure of Thailand ? to upgrade the airport, to get ready for everyone to go to the circuit. Not only for Buriram, but also the area and the north eastern part of Thailand. They welcome this major event to the north east, and believe the economic and the tourist impact will be very good for Thailand. Thank you to Dorna Sports, for coming to Thailand with MotoGP.?

Carmelo Ezpeleta, CEO Dorna Sports: ?Today the Sports Authority of Thailand and Dorna Sports signed the contract for the Grand Prix of Thailand to be at the circuit in Buriram from 2018 to 2020. Thailand is a big consumer of bikes also and they are happy to use MotoGP to develop tourism here in Thailand. We are very proud to have made this agreement with the Thai government. The races here so far have been Superbike ? who will also renew the contract in the near future ? and we see that there?s a lot of expectation. MotoGP has had a lot of interest in Thailand, and it?s sure to be a Grand Prix with a lot of interest from everyone. We need to fix some of the dates but the calendar is finished, and I hope we can soon announce the draft calendar for 2018.?

The Locations and dates for next year follow on rounds usually comes in October.
Tickets will probably be same as WSBK online sales and local sales .

Now lets see if Buriram (Thailand) can Handle 70,000 +  at the track and Road /rail/air transport
I will be there supporting the Local wildcards and the Superstars👍👍😎

Hi to all
If anyone is interested the Official Dorna VIP tickets are for sale on the Motogp.com web site, at  999.00 euro
I just wonder if Dorna are going to take full control of the venue to make it a better organised weekend than WSBK, like tshirts that fit westerners and more food and drinks including water that dosent run out pray1 pray1

Saying that the SBK lounge was good the last 2 years and the stands are also good for the racing.

Moto GP tickets on sale. 5th to 7th October.
Guys........I've checked out various ticket sites and all Grandstand early bird tickets seem to be sold. Does anyone know if they can be purchased at the track ticket office??

http://www.allticket.com/ is showing NO tickets available for the main grandstand.

I saw on a Facebook feed more than a week ago that the grandstand was sold out.

Side stands still available.

I am not sure if the All Ticket office at the track is still open now that winter testing is finished  (?)

I tried to change my 7/11 receipt for an October pass and was told "not yet"

I asked when? " Don't know"   ::)

I managed to get 7 Marquez Stand tickets. I've never been to the circuit. Can anyone tell me if the Marquez stand is covered/has shade??

Part of me wanted to wait and see if 7/11 do come up with any tickets as advertised but thought better to play safe. It may well be that some grandstand tickets are being held back but who knows. The adverts claim 4,000 for Grandstand at 7/11.

Freddy, neither the Rossi or Marquez stands have been built as yet.

I would like to think that they will be well covered, at least to the same configuration as the  existing side stand.

The Rossi and Marquez stands, I am led to believe, will be to the East (right hand side) of the grandstand looking out to the track.

Somnat. Ahh, OK. That's why I can't find any images of them. I've seen circuit map with them marked and yes, from the grandstand they are to the right just before the final bend. Looks a reasonable position for forward view of whole circuit.

I trust there is a better plan for car parking than the Winter Testing last few days. Was a complete schmozzle. Acres and acres of beautiful concrete parking area near the main stand completely fenced off and unusable.

Don't know what numbnut thought this was a good idea.

All traffic being directed into a piddly little parking area already full of cars, all parked higgledy piggledy, as you do in LOS.

Was interesting to watch the MotoGP guys though. Take your earplugs if going to the big event in October. Was way louder than Superbikes.

Probably going to be reserved for VIP on the day. I would imagine that the amount of VIP attendance for the inaugural event will be high.

There are some very nice VIP tents erected under a billboard at the racetrack. Many workers last night working on the hotel overlooking the actual racetrack. I suspect this parking map could be helpful to expats who plan to view the races or have associates coming to Buriram to view the races. My hardware store will be open during all days of the Moto GP races. Free delivery in the immediate neighborhoods near the racetrack may be a challenge next weekend. Thank you, Mr. Pichai.
