The British embassy in Bangkok will, as from 1st January, no longer issue income letters for extensions of stay.

Sounds like some will now be saved from paying the 52 GBP for the letter as a Thai Bank Account Bank Book ( statement ) will only have to be shown.
But one problem I see is some of the Expats I know that use this letter for a marriage extension as they have 2 pensions .Their Government Pension that gets paid straight into their Thai Bank account which they live on and a 2nd Private pension that gets paid into their UK Bank account and stays there for a rainy day. The good thing about the Embassy letter was it combined the 2 . I guess the Thai Immigration know this and want the Funds to be in a Thai Bank and not an Oversea's one .
Now both pensions will have to be brought to Thailand meaning addition monthly transfer cost's ::)

That's what I think too, Smithy.
There have been reports that the Canadian embassy have also stopped issuing letter. Some expats have suggested tat their embassy will stop too.
Looks like it has come from the Thai authorities. I believe that they want to see the money coming into Thai banks every month, as some immigration offices have already asked to see.

Looks like it has come from the Thai authorities.
They seem to be having a right crackdown at the moment .... No visa, lapsed visa means deportation within a month (http://www.nationmultimedia.com/detail/national/30356023)
This wont effect any of the good Law Abiding Expats on here .
Its a shame that the UK don't take lessons from the Thai Immigration on how to clean up a Country. Can you imagine the outcry form the SJW's and the Bleeding Heart Liberals if the UK tried to do something like this.!!!!
Oh the cries of their Human Rights being violated, sometime living in Thailand seems like the real World , whilst other places like Europe and the UK are more like cloud cuckoo land ::) loco wildman whistle brick1

Agree entirely
Here in Thailand, do something wrong - one strike and you''re out.
In the UK and other western countries, if you have done something bad in your native country, you are welcomed with open arms....free housing, welfare benefits etc etc...........and bring the extended family too!

Agree entirely
We'd be called Far Right Wing Nazi's for having these views in the UK now by the so-called UK Media (http://teakdoor.com/images/smilies/yerman.gif) (http://teakdoor.com/images/smilies/yerman.gif)

For a long time now, people have been condemning the U.S. for deporting illegals. The left has been up in arms about this. Doesn't seem so bad now, does it?

It never was a bad idea....
I expect they forked up the processing though.

Maybe this can help the British people here.
I saw this letter at the immigration office here.

I watched the interview of the US consulate general on 103 and was surprised to hear that there are 75000 U S expats on long term stay visa in Thailand. Most in Chaing Mai, Pattaya, Phuket and Bangkok. He also explained the rules, as he has seen the final draft of the police order, for retirement extension includes 800,000 in a Thai bank, 65,000 transfer monthly or a combination of the same but the amounts on deposit here that are required will have to be verified by searching the official Thai website after mid January when the order comes out. In other words it was 50/50 but the impression I got was that this will change.

DD, I wasn?t aware that we were expecting any change in the amounts involved.
-
I guess inflation will at some point hit the qualifying amongst. It's been the same for a long time. Can't see that there would be any consideration for the various weak currencies around the world. The agents will be rubbing their hands together if the amount increases.

The last time the amounts increased there was a grandfathering system. Those that already had extensions from a certain date could use the old amount for future extensions. There are still people out there extending stays with only 200k shown.
