You are not able to get Cambodian insurance on a Thai car.
I took my Thai Honda in and spent 9 months in 08-09 and only had one accident driving around the whole country and that was in PP when a truck ran right into the side of my car , backed up and left.
Cost me $100 to get it repaired.
Make sure u have ur purple book and English stickers for ur license plate.
Am moving back up there this July and heading form Phuket to northern Thailand and crossing over to Laos an than heading down to Cambodia.
Be careful passing cars as u need pull way out to see around the truck in front of u.
Driving in Phnom Penh is an experience :-) as there really is nobody that follows the laws.

Hi
I have been to Laos a couple of times via different border crossings, at Nong Khai for Vientiane there was an insurance office specifically for incoming vehicles at the crossing.
At ? forgotten name for Pakse they issued me with insurance at the Laos side of border crossing. Always a very modest cost but then it was only for a few days.
Hope this helps. Don't forget to take car registration book!

PS Also you must get a car passport. Only available at a limited number of Licensing offices, and only valid for 1 year. ( I think only available from offices that border another country)
