Title: Bangkok bank not issuing Visa Debit Cards anymore ONLY Union Pay
Post by: iammike on October 24, 2017, 04:36:57 PM
Called the BKK Bank call center and was told that Bangkok Bank doesn't issue Visa Debit Cards anymore but now only UNION Pay Debit cards.

This really scuks as Union Pay are IMHO useless, they aren't even accepted at many retailers. Tried at Tops didn't work, had to pay with cash. And yes there is money in the account ;)

Edit: Forgot something

That's been happening at BBK for a longtime.

I changed banks. No problem. Now with Kasikorn.

Thanks Starman.

We are thinking of doing that and close everything at BBL. The 2 of us have 6 accounts at BBL (4x Savings (2 in Pattaya, 2 in Buriram) and 2 Fixed deposit accounts)

Was it difficult to open an account at Kasikorn for a Foreigner ??

Asking for Work Permit and all that kind of hassle ??

And did you get Internet Banking ?

And is it true that you can get a Virtual Credit Card where you can do online shopping (SCB also has one of those, but that one only works WITHIN Thailand)

Kasikorn asked for my passport. They took a copy of the photo page only.No talk of WP or visa status.

I asked for online banking. They set it up and I received login information via SMS within 24 hours.

I have registered my debit card online and can now make purchases online. Not sure about international purchases. If I purchase something from abroad I use my UK card.

Overall a very good service.

Oke thanks again.

I just thought of something, I can't close my Fixed Deposit account at BBL just yet as I am soon starting the process of getting my extension of stay based on Marriage at Buriram Immigration. But as soon as I get my stamp that one will also be closed ;)

One more question, how is the parking situation at Kasikorn Down Town Buriram ?? I believe that it's the only branch in Buriram CITY ?? There used to be in Krasang, but that one closed down recently.

3 Kasikorn banks in Buriram town.

One near the old "Talad Tong" market (past the bus station, turn right at traffic lighs and on the right almost opposite 7/11). One near to the morning fresh market.(Bangkok Bank on left at traffic lights. Turn right. About 200m on the right). One in Taweegit supercentre.

Not far from you is the branch in Prakhonchai. I have heard very good stories of the service there.

Which way would you travel from your home(Krasang?) to Buriram or Prakhonchai to make such a difference in journey time?

Buriram I go via Baan Yang (30-35min drive) and then another 10min orso to Buriram.
PrakhonChai, I first have to go to Krasang (30 min drive) and then straight down at least another 45 mins.

Edit: I don't live in Krasang but 18kms (on bad roads) from it.

Edit2: For comparison, I am approx 30-35min from Satuek airport.

As of last Friday the Bangkok Bank branch upstairs in Robinson Lifestyle Center in Buriram, did have in stock genuine Bangkok Bank DEBIT cards with the Visa logo and a Rabbit.  I believe the price was either 100 baht  or 300 baht to purchase. The annual fee for most accounts was quoted as 300 baht. This Visa debit card can be verified by Visa at your home or at the bank branch. There is at least one customer service representative at a desk near the tellers who understands and speaks English.  Thank you Mr. Pichai.

Very interesting Mr Pichai,

but on their website (http://www.bangkokbank.com/BangkokBank/PersonalBanking/DailyBanking/Be1stVisaDebitCard/Pages/B1stnewdefault.aspx ) there is NO mention anymore of the Visa Debit Card, only their UnionPay Cards and even in mails to their Customer Service they are saying "NO more Visa, only UNION Pay".

I wonder what the catch is  with BKK Bank Robinson issuing them !!

When I am in Buriram I will go and ask, because the UnionPay card we have isn't accepted at many Retail Store.

I got the Union Pay card.  I have used it at Big C, and Hot Pockets.  You must enter your pin when using.

Do they surcharge you for using a debit card?  For a credit card OK.  I bank with BBK, have a UnionPay card and consider it useless.  Cash is king here.  Further comment withheld.

There is no surcharge to the user.  I find debit cards very handy.

Recently got a "Bunny card" from BBK [replacement for Visa debit card].  Works just fine.

Strange that BBK should bin VISA before establishing a large enough trader base to accept (the Chinese) UnionPay.  In the meantime other ways to pay will be needed  cash, visa, m/card,  but they won't give me a visa card.  So I'll take my custom to Kasikorn and shop with plastic like modern people do.

Bunny Card is a Visa card [Debit]
It is a chip type card and offers more security.

Be aware of the "good through" date when obtaining a Visa debit card from ANY Thailand bank. When the attractive woman who speaks some English at the desk in Buriram mentions short time she might be making a bit of baht on a Visa debit card that will only function for a few months.

I believe they have run out of Visa debit cards at the Bangkok Bank branch inside Robinson Lifestyle Center.  It is a disturbing policy to only issue Union Pay cards to bank customers.

I rarely use Union Pay card for anything other than ATM however over the past few days I've needed to book hotels and a flight. Neither Agoda or NokAir would accept the UnionPay card.
Think I'll open another account elsewhere so I have Visa.

So how much did the Chinese pay for this mission to nowhere?

No idea but Bangkok Bank are surely going to loose a lot of business. Ridiculous for a major bank not to offer Visa or MasterCard. Cost me quite a lot extra having to use my UK visa.

My guess is someone has paid a mighty big bung to someone here in order to get their foot in the   door.  But traders do not trust being paid.  Like Chinese TVs and rice cookers, you buy them on hope.  I'm looking for a new bank.

I find myself using my U.S. Visa and ATM from Chase as neither charges foreign transaction fees and the ATM refunds Bangkok Bank's 220 baht fee.  Whenever I have checked my statements against BBK's TT rate I find I get a better rate with Chase as well as having good fraud notification/protection.  Also don't find as many merchants imposing a credit card fee as before but need to make sure the transaction goes through in baht instead of being converted to dollars at typically terribleThai bank rates.

At main branch Buriram. Bangkokbank. They now refuse to accept pink identity card for transactions. You must bring your passport!

I did read when they first came out......

Quote
The Thai ID cards come in pink and yes they are written in Thai only. It will cost you somewhere around 60 baht and is valid for ten years. You must be wondering about the benefit of having a Thai identity card. Well, it serves as a proof of your registered address. It will help you in applying for an account in your desirable bank, for transferring a two-wheeler or acquiring a license. One of the biggest advantages of having this with you is you won?t need to carry your passport everywhere.  In fact, with this ID card, you can easily board a domestic flight. Also, applying for a bank loan would be so easy with this.

Obtaining Thai ID card for foreigners wouldn?t be that difficult. You will have to make sure all your documents are ready. You will require copies of your passport, valid visa or visa extension and a copy of a yellow house book. What is interesting about these pink ID cards is that they can transfer information digitally with the help of a magnetic strip. I see so much technology there!

By the way, the need for having a Thai ID card for foreigners is a recent development. This thing came up after the bomb attack that took place at the Erawan Shrine in 2015. So, this is completely a new law in Thailand. There are many who aren?t yet aware of it. Now that you know, make sure to enlighten others

But with so many reports like yours DD I haven't bothered getting one ,a Passport and Yellow House book seems to work for most things and I get a LoR when needed from my local Amphur Office !!
