I usually find the opposite. If you are buying 'Thai' goods there may not be a huge difference but when it comes to 'Farang-type' stuff. I would never find potatoes at 28 Baht a kilo at TESCO or Big C. Staff very good at Buriram Makro.
One thing I find strange is the price variation between one Makro store and another - notably when comparing Pattaya. 5 litres of Rosso wine in Buriram 980 Baht - I bought in Pattaya for 790 baht !!
-
I have also found prices cheaper in Chiang Mai than Surin but I do not make a special ruin to CM to stock up. I see very little difference in prices between Makro, Tesco and Big C hear in Surin or did I see it in Chiang Mai.
-
There are things which are cheaper in Big C (tins of dog food, when they have any stock), and sometimes Big C has stock when Makro has none. But in general, you get far better buys in Makro for vegetables, fish, some meat, bakery items, and certain specialised farang foods such as muesli and olive oil. Also, of course, you can buy case lots of beer and soft drinks. For things you use in quantity (cooking oil, nam pla, soap, detergent, cleaning goods) Makro is again much cheaper.

I agree except on beer and soft drinks. Same price at Tesco and Big C and in some cases cheaper at local booze shop. Even spirits can be found cheaper than Makro.

Not the 'international' spirits
-
I'll give it to you on the international spirits for local but if you get at least to Korat you can beat them. But then again Mont Clair wine 5L Makro 985. Staffords Prasat 955. Rimping Chiang Mai 935.

David, I think you must be going round with your eyes closed. Buriram certainly stocks and I am fairly certain I have seen it in Surin (not sure which one uou use).

Makro in Surin has not stocked Tiger since the flood for that mater yesterday was the first time in 3 months that they had Leo large in stock. Big C has always carried Tiger and Tesco has just started to stock Tiger. For information i only have to go as far as Prasat to the local Tesco Express to by both Tiger and Leo. leo is 495 large percase same as Makro which is another 35 km away.

A lot of Makro's seem the same, the one in Saraburi has almost the same setup as Buriram.
Pattaya's Makro is worth visiting as they have extra Farang items (such as Magners).
today I went to the Marko just nort of the Don Muang Airport, what a place, it was huge. There is no comparison with the DMK Marko and others that I have visited, yes prices are about the same, but the selection is really awesome.
If someone asks I will provide the GPS coordinates from my garmin as I set it as a saved location.

That is Rangsit......& yes it is a large one but very little farang goods are stocked there.Pattaya which is the new format of store does indeed have a decent range of farang food & a very large frozen food section

Mostly agree.
What it did have that I have not been seeing in Markos (including Pattaya) is 450mm bottles of coke Zero (126 a dz). I prefer plastic bottles over cans when traveling in the car.
Also, for us Yanks they had medium sized bottles of Tabasco Sauce (3 for 147) if I remember correctly. That is the best price I've seen in Thailand.
-
I thought only women loved shopping and the males suffered it through necessity. And justs so I know will proof of British citizenship bar me from buying Tabasco sauce in Mackro? Or other nationalities allowed to buy Tabasco sauce but at different price?biggreen
I am amased at how meticulous you guys are and how organised you seem to be let alone the distances your prepared to travel. party15
Me I just grab whats available wherever I am and if I can't find something first time round the iles with the trolly wildman then I go without. Luck would have it my misses has a similar approach to crocery shopping and prefers to drop me off at a bar whilst she partakes in other shopping activities. thumbup
Mind you that said I do like a wonder around the markets two or three times a year. Each to their own...... bravo1
Note to self: Must remember to pick up new knitting pattern next shopping day!

People will search high and low for a particular item they want or need.
For instance, I spent three hours today going from shop to shop looking for some of those camouflage pants.
Couldn't see a pair anywhere..........
:D
-
Very funny DJ but have to point out with you being a fellow brit must mean "pants" as in underpants and I can't imagine for one moment why that particular garmet would need to be camouflaged. cheergirl
-
Looks like a couple of you might be looking to buy some 'Grass Paint',for info Peter in Nang Rong sells it in three shades.....Green Grass.....Grass Green ....& Greener than Grass.
-
Has he got some of those on the other side brushes?
-
What about left handed tea cups?
-
I'm looking for a cordless extention lead???
-

Dear boy, It's normal in military circles to camouflage an enormous weapon until it's in action..... biggrin1
-
What about left handed tea cups?
That's easy, but you would need left handed teaspoons to go with them!!
-
LOL,
I agree about shopping, I am normally in and out in about 5 minutes to get just what I need.
However, when you have a business that requires restockage every week (or more), it is agrevating to find your main supply store out of an item. Plus Makro often has specials such as 2 for 1 when they are pushing a new item and this adds to our profit margin. When shopping is for business and profit guys take a different view.
However, I find myself wondering around the store wasting time as my TG is taking 15 minutes to determine which item to choose.
Can't say I've every seen another nationality using Tabasco Sauce which is a main staple in the States and available at most US resturants, I would guess something like malt vinegar for you Brits (which I use). But go ahead a buy, the US economy needs all the help it can get.
-

They're hard to find. Most are bought by the road laying gangs for smoothing the surface after an expertly done repair.

I have Tabasco in my cupboard and use it occasionally. I am not from the USA, but could variously be described as a Brit, Irish, and in view of longevity in Thailand , a Thai!..................not to mention a few other names!

Much the same for me. My personal shopping trips are over very quickly but accompanying Mrs. saf around Makro in Korat for her business supplies is a test of emotional endurance.
Korat's Makro is going the same way as our much more local Tesco. Supplies have been erratic ever since last years' floods and it's annoying to find that stocks of some of her menu items haven't been replenished. Fortunately, there are alternative suppliers for most thing she buys from Makro but, after a 35K trip, empty shelves are not amusing.
Tabasco, for me, is mainly something with which to spice up a cocktail or use in cooking. I wouldn't put it on food but I have seen Thais do it. Well, give them a tray of condiments and they'll use the lot!
-

Don't take her to the Rangsit Makro as you might be there for days, the place is probably 4 times as large as Buriram's Makro.

Do they stock Tiger light ? :o
I couldn't even get small bottles of Chang from the local Chang warehouses - I had to buy in Pattaya.

I'll ask but there's no real demand for it over here so probably not. Even Chang Export hasn't caught on. They are both available at Tesco, though.

I've not seen Tiger light up here either.........BUT The Chang Export is a big seller around here selling even more than LEO!!
-
jUST A QUICKIE...............Makro sell ASAHI AT 755/BOX 12 lARGE..............i HAVE IT AVAILABLE FOR a lot ,lot less!!
-
Another beer quickie ..... I noticed Buriram Makro seem to stock quite "old" beer stock !!!!
Saw Chang Export bottled febuary mixed in on a pallet with early april boxes.
Leo bottled march and april. Apparently NO IDEA about stock rotation.
Not sure of others take on Thai beer, but I think it does not store / keep so well as (for example) Australian beer.
When I do have a tipple, its normally LEO. Anything more than a month old seems to me to have a less than the advertised "refreshing" taste.
-
The idea of stock rotation and observance of expiry date has yet to reach many parts of Thailand.
Leo seems to taste different from week to week and shop to shop. Is it the age of the stock or inconstant brewing? It hadn't occurred to me to use Aussie beer as a benchmark.
-
Anyone who considers LEO to be a decent beer must be used to drinking 'catspiss'
-
It's a choice between different types of cats-piss.
-
If you come from South of Watford you won't know what real beer is!!
-
There are some good ales brewed all over England. You need to get about more when you're back home, Nookie - good for the figure. ;D
-

Best of a bad bunch nookiebear IMHO. Mind you, I have taken a shine to Chang Export of late.
Australia suffers from the same problem as well. The run of the mill XXXX (fourx)- VB - Melb Bitter - swan etc etc are borderline.
About the only decent beer comes out of Tasmania (again, IMHO) :)
But everyone to their own when it comes to beer.
-
You guys live in Thailand, is there really a need to buy hot sauce (such as Tabasco)? Thailand is the land of different chili sauces. Mix up a little prik nam pla for a couple of baht. That is similar to an Eskimo buying ice from a store.
-

I have to agree with that. One of my favorites is "Old Speckled Hen" from a cask.

3. Now we can talk brands.

Brisbane is a good city as well....enjoy.

I meant to post 2 days ago, but got sidetracked and oldtimers kicked in.
Went to Buriram Makro and bought 2 cases of Leo (12 pk bottle). This was on 19 Nov, the date on the box was 16 Nov. Looks like they are getting fresh Leo.
However, do not expect cases of canned Leo, seldom available.
-
Local suppliers around Nong Ki /Nang Rong have plenty of LEO in both cans & bottles
-
I have heard Makro are now stocking Beer LAO.........CAN ANYONE CONFIRM THIS AS ITS A HELL OF A WAY FOR ME TO TRAVEL TO A mAKRO STORE.

ITS PRICE HASN'T INCREASED IN THE LAST 3 YEARS!
-
If anyone is stocking Smirnoff, they have new carriers, but you have to look behind the old cardboard packages. Same price.
I think these new ones and so you can make the bottles cold then take it TOGO.
-
I was in the Buriram Makro today, they are limiting cases of Leo to 3.
And still no regulars cases of Leo Cans, Korat had them a week ago, but was limiting them to 2. Buriram Makro did have 6 packs of Leo cans.
And the Smirnoff carrier was sold out.
-
The big Hokee store in Nang Rong was limiting Leo to 20 cases/493baht.....Leo Cans to 6 /570 baht but they had plenty of it.
-
There is a case for Makro insisting on minimum purchases, since it is a wholesaler.
Many times I queue up behind someone with only 3/4 items and no Makro card, and worse still are the folk who spend 5/6/7000bt and want to pay in 20bt bills all neatly bundled in packs of 5.
Bugger off!
-

True it is classed as a 'Wholesaler' but many things can be bought cheaper in TESCO'S or BIG C!
-
Case of Leo 24 pack cans in Makro today was 628 baht, up from 570. 12 pack case bottles still 495, looks like the 3 limit was removed. Again, no pictures.
-
Leo Cans now 620 in Hokee,,,,,,,,,,,bottles unchanged at 493

So changes in the Buriram Makro:
1. They have you pay for beer (and I assume other Alcohol) on a single ticket, and then scan in the rest of your purchase. Two receipts paid separately.
2. My TG was told today that starting on 1 Nov they will no longer provide the invoice printout, they are going to a regular type receipt. I would assume just like for those that don't have a Makro card.

Looked at this old post, talk about inflation:
24 Pack can Leo:
1 Jan - 570 Baht
6 Jan - 628 Baht
10 Sep - 702 baht.
132 baht increase in less than 9 months, a 23% increase.

I don't think Thai taxman will accept what you are saying on point no2
re Point 1 ,in places such as Pattaya ALL alcohol EXCEPT for beer is already paid for seperatly

Paul are you stupid? Don't you use a spell check? Can't even spell separately (even when it is spelled correctly in the quote)? Shame on you.
Just returning the favor on your noting my spelling. Careful when you berate someone's spelling, it means you had better be correct, especially when replying to a post of theirs.

Irony is when some one writes "your an idiot". Good quote that one.
This thing with Makro bills is something to do with corporate tax. If you own a registered company you can now use Makro receipts in your tax returns. There are forms that need to be filled out. Looks like people with companies will still get the large printouts.

It is rather like when they open their mouths - just wait, they will fcuk it up eventually! :)

I love it when Americans try and give grammar/spelling lessons.
It is rather like when they open their mouths - just wait, they will fcuk it up eventually! :)
You will notice that I rarely (think this was the 2nd time) make an issue of spelling, especially since as you put it, I will screw up again.
However, Nookie are I are best buds that enjoy one upping the other, The END is my favorite so far. And as I said, was just returning the favor for him mentioning my spelling.
BTW, am I the only one that can't get spell check to work on this forum?
-
It is no secret, Adam, that you are a great fan of American sport.
Lacrosse anyone!!!!
I quite like a bit of NFL, but the rest of their sport is cack, sadly working on ships over here, it is usually all I can see. Rounders on now and netball starts soon.
NASCAR, round and round they go WTF!!

Smooth,
I was in Makro today and saw the sour cream, same cooler as the milk but at the opposite end.

Cheers ... thanks Keith party4
Love my deep fried potato wedges with sour cream
-
Oh sh$t,thanks,I have missed sour cream, potatoes wrapped in foil, baked, with a little butter, chives and a big spoon full of sour cream on top,I'm off to Makro tomorrow! Thanks.
-
Ummm,HEALTH warning....no on second thoughts....fuc$ it.I'm eating!
-
My ultimate goal in finding the sour cream is to make Nachos Supreme.
I hope to overcome the missing Jalapenos by growing them, was not successful yet.
Tortilla chips are another hurdle, but I hope to learn to make them.
And also need to make some guacamole sauce.
Gives me a hobby besides making pickles.
-
Urleft.I have seen Jalapenos somewhere,and I think Torilla shells/chips,but can't remember where,If I do I'll let you know.
-
Please explain why Jalapenos should be better than Thai chili (of which there are more than a few varieties). I just noted a recipe for Srirachah sauce (Srirachah is in Chonburi province) from America and they say 'take two Thai chillis, 1 and 3/4 pounds Jalapenos... what is this about?
I can grow some for you if you can get me seeds but I need convincing first. My wife sampled Js in Switzerland and had to stifle a laugh, she thought them rubbish.
-
Different kind of pepper, for example, it would be very labor intensive to make stuffed thai pepper. While stuffed Jalapenos (cream cheese, cheddar, etc), can be awesome.
However, most Jalapenos you get are pickled. Try a fresh jalapeno for some real heat.
I'll be glad to give you a pacakage of seeds with the caveat you'll share the crop with me.
-
Hold the olives,I hate olives....bring the rest on....now I'm hungry....shit I could eat the arse out of an elephant now.Stop teasing poor JasonB.

Ok. Not this week, too busy, but I will definitely send you a PM next Monday. I doubt that we will need many Js! Still have 2 Kgs from last year.

Great, will look forward to it.
I also have some Habenaro seeds. And Cilantro (used in salsa (another goal of mine)).
If you are interested, and have a lot of different seeds if you care to check them?

So changes in the Buriram Makro:
1. They have you pay for beer (and I assume other Alcohol) on a single ticket, and then scan in the rest of your purchase. Two receipts paid separately.
2. My TG was told today that starting on 1 Nov they will no longer provide the invoice printout, they are going to a regular type receipt. I would assume just like for those that don't have a Makro card.
I don't think Thai taxman will accept what you are saying on point no2

It is a damned poor mind indeed that can't think of at least two ways of spelling any word.

Soured cream is expensive when compared to regular cream. 34 baht for 150 ml compared to a very good half cream in Makro at about 90 baht for 900+ml
Why not make your own? Cream and lemon/lime juice to taste. Hey presto!!!

A recipe on youtube says to use cultured buttermilk. Is buttermilk available here?

Cream and lemon/lime juice is the easiest way.
However if you wish to use buttermilk the you must make that first.
Put some cram in a bowl an whisk it with an electric mixer. It will start to resemble whipping cream. Continue to mix and the cream will become sticky and will them firm up. This is butter. The liquid in the bottom of the bowl is buttermilk.
-
Hang on there, you must have at least 35% fat content to do that. So you go to Makro and buy 1litre of whipping cream (60%) for ฿110.- You get about 6 dl of buttermilk, and some nice butter. Ideally you would buy the 35% cream from BigC for ฿92.- per QUARTER litre. Alternatively you can mix water with milk, as per pancake recipes. .....
MILK, Buttermilk (sour milk) 1 cup (240 ml) 1 tablespoon lemon juice or vinegar (white or cider) plus enough milk to make 1 cup (240 ml) (let stand 5-10 minutes)
1 cup (240 ml) plain or low fat yogurt
1 cup (240 ml) sour cream
1 cup (240 ml) water plus 1/4 cup buttermilk powder
1 cup (240 ml) milk plus 1 1/2 - 1 3/4 teaspoons cream of tartar

Are you guys kidding ??
Sell some gold ... or whatever it takes ... to scrape together 34 baht.
Then go to Makro and buy 150ml sour cream.
Job done.

Agree, no one even cares when they are paying 60 Baht for a pie, or 70 Baht for a beer. What's the big deal with 34 Baht/150ml sour cream. brick1

The lockdown must be making everyone very bored. swordfight
-
Sorry. I thought this forum was "expats helping expats".
Why pay more when you can pay less?
Also, my advice also helps when Makro are out of stock on sour cream. You can also make it to your own taste.
I personally find the Makro sour cream not sour enough.
-
Thats why.

Maybe, how about that request from Nookie for pics of some babe around the shampoo(?) area. Pics of good looking women are appreciated by me, can't really say that about Buriram turkeys.

Whoa, what a charlie foxtrot. I ordered the item on line and they said pay for it at the Buriram Makro. Unfortunately no one at the Buriram Makro had a clue what was happening. What should have been about 5 minutes took over 30.
If you buy this way you need to go to the desk in the front past the cash registers, not the service desk. They even have a sign for Makroclick. Good luck if you do. However, maybe they will know something for the next guy.
