Title: Windows 10
Post by: Starman on May 12, 2016, 07:00:01 PM
I am running an original version of Windows 7.

I keep getting a prompt for the free upgrade to Windows 10.

Is anyone using 10? Are there any problems? I have heard that there may be some problems with some Wifi routers.

Your experiences would be welcome.

Here is a list of articles from users about Windows 10, I have not heard anything good about it yet:

I downloaded it a month or so ago - it took an absolute age.

It seemed ok apart from constant requests for more and more information which I found intrusive and bloody annoying.

Luckily you have the option to revert back to your original system which I took - another long wait - so I'm back on 7 until I'm forced to change.

Thank you for your comments. Looks like I will wait.

You can wait, but the upgrade is only free until end of July.

I have 3 PCs 2 of them have been upgraded to Win 10 and no problems, and most certainly no problems with Routers, Wifi devices etc

Even if you upgrade, you have 30 days to revert back to the old OS.

I give Starman at least a +1 for this thread.  It got me thinking.

Windows 10 was released about a year ago, there were lots of issues.  However MS has been working to correct the issues.  I just (within the past hour) downloaded Windows 10 on a computer I bought less than 2 weeks ago.  My initial impressions are favorable.  So far so good.

What is important to me is that I have 20 certified windows 7 licenses for my computers, if I download windows 10 before 29 July, the upgrade is free.  Those licenses cost well over 30K baht.  Therefore my Windows 7 licenses will convert to Windows 10.  That is a hugh cost benefit factor.

Get it free while you can.

No issues with widows 10, seems to work well for me. I just hate getting used to something new when I am used to using something old.

I upgraded my main PC from Win 7 Pro to Win 10 Pro but I reverted back to Win 7 after 1 day. I didn't have any device issues. Too much spyware / bloatware for me. I didn't like the new look & feel and IMHO nothing has noticeably improved for me. In fact I think it is more cumbersome if you don't have a touch screen. Thats just my opinion though.

I updated my tablet to Windows 10 because it came with Windows 8.1 installed which I didn't like either. I thinl Win 10 (like Win 8.1) is more for touch screen devices.

^No Problem, but before you apply any of the changes, create a system restore point. (Some of the programs listed will do it for you, but better be safe then sorry ;) )

How long did it take,please?

I have a commitment to be online at 6pm every evening.

If I start at 8am does that give me time to got to 10 and, if required, back to 7?

Thanks.

It took me about 30 minutes to download, but that was using US ADSL.  My firefox files were transferred, but I had an issue with some on-line.  Nothing was transferred to the new explorer.

So far I have no regrets with switching to 10.

Download speed will be no problem.

What about installation time?

Download speed will be no problem.

What about installation time?

One of my PC's about 40-45 minutes, but on the other one almost 2.5 Hours.

Depends on a couple of things, like how much RAM your PC has also HDD speed (SSD is fast), processor speed (Pentium or i7) etc etc

Microsoft is 'tricking' people into downloading Windows 10 - here's how to avoid the upgrade

I updated my main computer to Win 10 today.

The download process was slow (4Gb over WiNet) took well over 2 hours. The installation took around 30-45 minutes.

Some programs got deieted (like Speccy) but that was not a problem a simple reinstall fixed that.

Working with it now and everything looks fine.

Ps: I ran O&O Shutup10 (and the equivalent Spybot version) to stop it leaking too much info to MS

I have to eat some Humble Pie now.

After the initial upgrade Yesterday to Windows 10, this morning my computer started giving me all sort of problems. Network not connected Messages (but could browse the Internet), Wifi would not start etc etc.

Removed the whole network stack and installed (the new est drivers) but same same.

A lot of my trusty programs would not work or would only work if I started their services manually. (and these are programs that are designed to work with Win7,8,10).

To make a long story short.

I'm back on Windows 8.1 with GWX and OSUpgrade firmly DISABLED, fortunately that "down grade" process was smooth and easy (as long as you do it within 30 days after the initial upgrade)

Maybe I will go to Win 10 one more time, but that would be a complete Fresh Install and NO upgrade

Strange. I upgraded to W10 without a problem when prompted to do so last year. I ran a program called something like 'check for W10 compatibility' beforehand, there were no flags up.

My PC was fully compatible, else I wouldn't have got the upgrade after all as they (before they download and let you upgrade) do checks on your PC.

I have no idea what went wrong, but since then I have been looking over the Internet and the problem with Network Cable not connected etc seems to be a widespread one.

But as said, I removed the whole Network stack and reinstalled it and that didn't solve the problem. Another matter was that also Wifi was having problems. I tried to solve that using a USB Wifi but that wouldn't work either. The strangest thing was that during the whole ordeal I still had Internet Access via Lan cable but the Win 10 was showing a red cross that Network cable wasn't connected.

The major issue, why I reverted, was that some of my programs were having trouble on Win 10, and I couldn't be bothered today to do a removal and reinstall of them all, so a "down upgrade" was the easiest solution for now.

And don't forget not every PC is the same as my other PC's (Laptops, Nuc's etc) have upgraded to Win10 just fine.

Sorry to hear about your troubles.

Fortunately my "down upgrade" (not really IMO :D ) went pretty painless.

Hope you didn't lose anything.

I had heard many differing reports so thought I would try it.

I had a few corrupt files so a reload probably isn't a bad thing.

I have asked for MyDocs to be backed up so should be OK. Just the inconvenience really.

I advise the Never10 program (https://www.grc.com/never10.htm) if you don't wanna upgrade.

Program also shown in the link Sofa_King posted.

Microsoft has ended it's free mainstream support for Windows 7 on January 13, 2015, but users will continue to get security updates till 2020 ,so Windows 7 users are still good to go for a few more years yet   thumbup

The only thing I download now are the security updates ;)

Too slow and cumbersome. Pop ups too. Security alerts.

To be honest I think windows 10 offers too much.

I'm a CS guy, and I've used many microsoft products over the years, as well as several other operating systems, It seems microsoft gets every other release right.

Windows Millennium, Vista, and 8 were horrible, though the 8.1 upgrade made 8 at least usable.

Windows XP and 7 were fine.

I now have 2 laptops shipped with windows 10 and I like it better than 7.

When setting up WIndows 10, it's an absolute MUST to go slow and turn off all the options that will collect and send data to MS

I turned them all off as well.  Fortunately they were all on a couple of screens in the set up.

I've always been a big fan of Windows 7. A few months ago a brought a new Desktop PC and had Windows 10 installed. To my amazement I found it easy to use and anything I wasn't to sure about a quick Google pointed me in the right direction. There is no-way I would go back to Windows 7 now !
My old PC has now been upgrade ,a new CPU and a Windows 10 upgrade at a whopping  of 800Baht     and now my Stepdaughter uses it in her bedroom for homework , Facebook and You Tube......mainly You Tube though   ::)

I have 10 on my Dell laptop and been OK with it, until last month when a supposed upgrade was installed resulting in the laptop never booting.  After researching various fixes (non worked) I ended up having to re-install windows 10 resulting in all the data on the laptop being lost.  In addition all the programs had to be re-installed, I am sill fixing that issue.

Microsoft was less that useful in supporting corrections to the issue:
