Motocycle RIM small problem
« on: October 25, 2018, 06:03:34 PM »
Today one of our Motorcycle (Honda Wave) tires was flat. No biggie, we put some new air in to it it but it almost immediately went flat again.

Oke so our neighbor took the wheel out and saw the problem.

The side where the inner tube lays on the spokes (inside the rim) the top end of the spoke almost went through the tube. This was a relatively brand new Inner tube and also a brand new rim (from the Dealer) and we don't drive a lot (only use the Bikes in the village and drive less then 500km a year)

My neighbor said that this is a a common problem with Motorcycles and what he normally does is cut a piece of the old inner tube and stretches it so it covers the inside of the rim and thus sits between the new inner tube and on top of spoke endings. (as a barrier)

Now my question, I think it's a quick and easy fix, but does anyone know a better (more sturdier) solution?. We already went to our local Honda and asked about it and they said they don't have something like that.

Thx in advance for any tips.

PS: Attached a picture of a cut out of the old Inner tube where you can clearly see the indents of the spoke endings
Please note: The hole is where the Valve was and thus NOT the cause of the leak !

Hi Mike. Have you checked the spokes are tight? May need adjusting.

Spokes should definitely not protrude into the rim. A good quality rim should come with the liner you are building. I say scrap that rim as it may be dangerous. Hit a bump and your rim is no longer round!

Thx DD.

The spokes didn't protrude into the rim, only the top of the spoke (I don't know what you call that "big" round thing) and that has to be there as IMHO it connects the spoke to the rim.

We would gladly buy another Rim, but do you have any suggestions to where to buy one of these ?? This one was bought at the official Honda Dealer.

The rim should come with the rubber radial band which covers the retainers for the spokes if not get a new one. They are there to protect your tube from contact with the rim and spoke retainers.

Your neighbor is on the right track.

Thx @BlackCow

We already went to the official Local Honda Dealer and asked them about this Rubber Radial Band, and they don't have it.

The Honda Dealer is also were we got the Rim from.

Do you have any recommendations where to get such a Rubber Radial Band or shall we keep using the method my  neighbor uses ? Also if you know where to get a RIM with these Bands in place please let me know

Thx again, really appreciated.

At minimum I would take the rim to someone knowledgeable and ask if it is safe to use.

Thx for the suggestion, when we have some time we will do that. I suspect the other Rims on our other bike (also a Honda Wave) will look exactly the same.

But AFAIK the only place knowledgeable is the Official Honda Dealer where we bought the Rim from, so I guess I know the answer to our question already ;)

But we will take it with us and show it to some other shops.

follow the directions in the video. Even pushbike rims need the gasket or rubber radial strip between the spoke heads and the inner tube.
Ok, the first vid was for a tubeless tyre. Much the same principle for any spoke rim. As your neighbor said a cut up inner tube will do if you can not find a factory replacement.

Thx @BlackCow

That is exactly what my neighbor already has done but with and "old" inner tube strip he cut out and fitted it himself.

Oke will try to find those strips, but if even the Honda Dealer doesn't have them then it's just going into shops and ask and if we can't find them we just stick with my neighbors method ;)

Thx again !

iammike,

I don't know if you have visited BRY Honda in Muang Buriram (https://www.facebook.com/Honda-BRY-670213319741240/) or not.  If you haven't then you may want to try them and ask to speak to the parts department.

I searched for the correct part number for this strip/flap but I don't know which model of Honda Wave that you have or if it is for the front or rear wheel.  I did come back with a number of different part numbers but what may be more helpful is the parts diagram in the image and at these links: http://mototh.com/en/page/1263 (#4 in image) and https://www.bike-parts-honda.com/honda-motorcycle/100-MOTO/WAVE/2006/ANF100MSR6/Frame/REAR-WHEEL/90166/F_11/2/20531 (#16 in image).

Try showing the image to the parts department.  They should have this part in stock and if not should be able to order it.  Keep in mind that all rubber parts can suffer fatigue as they get older.  Also, some non-original equipment manufacturer (OEM) parts (i.e. these strips/flaps as well as the inner tubes) are sometimes made out of thinner/lower quality rubber.

Thx @M1Tanker

They are both Honda waves (one is the 125i and the other one is the 110) and the wheel we had the problem with was the Rear Wheel, but I suspect the Front Wheel will have the same issue.

Off topic but on the subject of motorbike parts.
Honda Big Wing have opened their new showroom ( The Tower) and it is impressive. Many millions spent building that one. Fantastic showroom and facility with a training track at the rear. They have a large dedicated Parts and Service department with its own manager and 3/4 staff sat behind the desk.
Went in last week with the new owner of the Honda I sold because he was having a couple of problems. Turned out the battery terminals were loose and a retaining screw on the battery clamp was missing. I've never removed the battery or had to charge it for that matter. It was in for its 1000km service a couple of weeks ago and a new relay was fitted, so I suspect that is where the problem occurred.
So, battery needed replacing under warranty. Told it has to be ordered, 7 day wait. Less than impressed, huge sign saying parts department but no stocked parts, not even basic items such as batteries.
After speaking to several staff via translate and finally the Manager I convinced them it would be a good solution to give me a battery from one of the new Rebels ( they had 6 in there storage) and replace it with the one ordered. There on a shelf not connected to the bikes. Seemed obvious to me but was unimaginable to them until I got angry.
Complete lack of any lateral thinking, simply ' Not have, have to order"!
