Canon MP287 printer
« on: March 23, 2017, 09:30:16 AM »
My laptop computer has stopped communicating with my Canon MP287 printer.

"Printer not detected" is the message. Tried all the non-tech stuff like re-booting the printer, jiggling with the connecting cable, trying a different USB port on laptop etc.

Maybe it's the printer driver ? No problem. I'll just re-install the printer program. Now, where did I put the Installation CD that came with the new printer 5 years ago ?

Can't find it. No problem. There are plenty of online sites to download MP287 install without CD. Tried 4 different online download sites yesterday. None worked for me.

So .... is there any shop around town that may have a Canon printer installation CD for sale ?

Also, any alternative helpful suggestions specific to my problem would be appreciated.

Second question. I've seen lots of Canon printers with the large external ink tanks as an aftermarket addon. Anyone have any reviews about these big tanks ? Work well ? Cost effective ?

Cheers.

I had the same problem with my Canon printer, I went to this side and downloaded new drivers and everything worked again. Worth a try. http://www.driversdownload.net/canon-pixma-mp287-driver-download.html

I foolishly bought a cheapo Canon last year (MG3500) nothing but trouble. 'not recognising the computer, no paper.....'  After doing all the stuff mentioned above I turned it upside down and shook it, bits fell out. Works now but I haven't turned it off or let anyone else touch it since.
Truly a crap printer, will buy an expensive laser printer next time.
(Ink tanks: they are messy but they work. Usually no guarantee)

My HP printer just stopped working for no reason.  Turns out if you refill the ink cartridges the printer somehow knows it and after so many times of refilling it died. HP was sued because they programmed the printer to stop working if non HP ink was used. I got a full refund. Don't know if cannon does this or not.

Thanks for your input lads. secosteve, davu and DD

Long story, but today I managed to print some photos via the Paint extension in Windows Pictures. Lots of rooting around to do this, but it worked ok as a short term solution.

So at least the driver is working, but there's a glitch in the system somewhere. I'll find it eventually or drop dead trying.

secosteve ... thanks for the link. I did try this one yesterday, but installation was unsuccessful for me.

davu ... yeah, I know what you mean. We love our electronics, until they stop working  5555  Only paid 2500 baht for my Canon printer 5 years ago, so it doesn't really owe me too much. I've probably paid 3 times that amount for ink cartridges .... hence my query about the big external tanks.

DD ... Interesting story. Don't know about the Canon printers having to use genuine ink. I've got the exact identical Canon printer on a desk back in Oz, but would you believe the Thai ink cartridge simply will not work in the OZ printer, and the Oz ink will not work in the Thai printer. Bullshit or what !!

To finish off this thread ... Siam Computers in towncentre were able to burn an installation CD for me straight off the Internet. 50 baht.

I read (some time ago) that HP stops working after 15 000 printings, signalling "defective component" or similar. A Russian website offered a program to overcome this, which apparently worked. That's when I switched to Canon, same kind of hassle.
I have difficulty convincing my wife that nothing comes for free and that cheap can work out expensive.

I've got a bottom of the range Canon IP2770 basic printer. I had the tanks fitted at the time of purchase. I use Color Fly ink which I can buy locally and works out much cheaper than buying individual cartridges. Never had any issues with the tank.

Over the years I have had 3 Hp, 1 Cannon and now a top of the range Epson.  Both previous brands were nothing but trouble.  The current Epson is with side mounted colour ink  wells but works better than all my former printers.

Have to agree there. Had a Brother DCP 195c for over 5 years. No problems.

Any Inkjet printer can have problems especially with Thailand's weather.

To avoid problems, just regularly print something, preferably something with color (at least 1-2 pages a week) so the Inkjets don't clog up.

Here are some test pages you can download and print
