Hoopoe
« on: May 30, 2016, 04:06:54 PM »
Saw this beautiful bird on the fence at my place in M.Buriram yesterday. Stayed maybe 5mins preening itself.

It's a Hoopoe. (pronounced hoo poo)

Common throughout Africa, Europe and Asia. National bird emblem of Israel. Not a threatened species. (thanks Mr Google)

First time I've ever seen one, and a beaut surprise for my wife, as she's also never seen one, but knew the name.

This Hoopoe put on a nice display by fluffing up its head feathers to the full extent, as shown in the pic.

Generally rather heard than seen, we had 8 or 9 on the neighbouring piece of freshly cleared land last year, shortly after rain, digging out something or another. It was a pleasant surprise for me too.

The hoopoe is a common bird in this part of the country. They nest in holes in trees or banks.... and will sit tight even if you shine a torch down the hole (the sitting bird usually just swears at you, though a few will leave the nest as you get near).  I often get them in my garden, three or four probing the ground for insects.

It's always been a personal favourite since I saw one at Dungeness Bird Observatory, in SE England, when I was 16 or 17.

I was a bit of a twitcher in my early teenage years ( until I found other birds to keep me occupied ) and remember seeing  4 or 5 Hoopoe in a small tree at the bottom of our garden one late spring morning .
I see them regularly over the rice fields and seeing them always bring back those happy times as a youngster scouting  the hedgerows ,woods and fields with my binoculars, notepad and pen , hoping to spot something special , maybe I should take it up again !!

Then they must be the sub-species called the "Fairway Hoopoe". That would explain why I've never seen one before.

Now ... if there's a sub-species called "NotTheFuckingForestAgain Hoopoe", well .... I'm likely to see hundreds     :D
