Water Tanks
« on: May 05, 2016, 05:07:46 PM »
Does anyone know where I can get someone to put an extra outlet onto a water tank? I have many tanks here but find I need to customise a couple of them to help to control crap which comes from my roof.
Have just been through an exercise cleaning my main input tank which meant loosing 3,000 ltrs of water to do so. Need to have to get it done "in situ" as the tank in question is impossible to extract. I live in Satuek.

Which kind of tanks ? Plastic or Concrete ?

Concrete not really a problem, but plastic would be more difficult.

They are plastic. When you purchase a plastic tank in Australia the installer adds the outlet when it is delivered.
From memory he installed a metal outlet, made a hole with a drill like you install a key hole & the fitting had a screw on fitting inside with a rubber seal.

Yes but this is Thailand.

I asked my DOS tanks supplier if they can do it, and they refused (not really, they just said not possible). The Safe brand tank guys could do it (on new tanks), but no idea if they will do it after wards. That is why I abandoned it and went for concrete tanks, no problems drilling additional holes and making them water tight.

Good luck with your question.

No, not yet. Mr Bob told me earlier that he saw a solution somewhere where a Scottish guy made something.
There is also a commercial solution which cost over 12,000 Baht which is quite complex.
I am still waiting for Bob to get back to me.
In the meantime I emptied my main collection tank which had a blocked outlet (lost 3000 ltrs of water in the process) & cleaned it out. Found plastic bags, gift wrappings & you name it in there. This crap has accumulated over the last 8 years.
So it is back the way it used to be unless I find a solution. I GUESS HAVING TO DO A CLEAN-OUT EVERY 8 YEARS IS TOLERABLE!!

Yes, it is called Cotto Crystal Rain. From looking at it you would have to buy it with it's own tank.

Just went into the market & had a look around a fishing net shop. They make bags for the villagers out of green shade cloth. Apparently they are for holding frogs. They have a draw string in the top. Should be good for going on to my inlet pipes.
Good price too (20B each). We'll see how they work!

The filter bag would be a good idea to keep the larger pieces of crap out of your tank or a piece of rolled up chicken wire would do, just remember to clean it out from time to time. To stop your tank from silting up over time from fine dust and bird droppings etc have a look on the Web under First Flush Rain Water Diverters.
I have only rain water for drinking and never had a problem in over 16 years. The biggest consideration would be to keep dead things out of your tanks. Never leave an entry point for frogs, etc.

Thank you for your advice 'blackcrow'. I use the rainwater for drinking & through the kitchen sink tap (my wife still buys her water which tastes very bland by comparison). It also goes through a basic filter before it arrives at the sink. When there is sufficient rainwater in the tanks I bypass the filter and send it to the upstairs bathroom too. The unfiltered rainwater is not nice for drinking. (Have had this system as it is for more than 8 years but a blockage of one of my main collection tanks has caused this rethink. When I cleaned it out recently it had quite a few  small plastic bags plus other small sundry things like a gift wrap ribbon. I think the birds may bring those things onto the roof.
I will look at the "First Flush Rain Water Diverters" as you mention.
Thanks again mate.
