Plants for House Frontage
« on: April 04, 2015, 05:48:03 PM »
My house frontage is about 10 meters and I have about a meter of garden before it meets the road. About 4 years ago I planted about 6 or 7 pot-bound  bougainvillea in the frontage soil, just plants I had dotted around my small garden  but they turned out to be like triffids and I was out there every month hacking them back.In the end I had to removed them as they got just too big, although they did look great when they were in full flower.
So can somebody recommenced some nice small flowering bushes I could plant out the front to brighten it back up

or could I just buy some more bougainvillea and plant them in the ground in their pots ???

Whilst there are many plant joints on every highway, I like the very large plant place just north of the Elephant monument on the R.H.S. Take your TW or TGF and have a look through there. You are sure to find something you like

But if you have a large wall or fence at the front, I can suggest a Blue Butterfly Pea. Its a climber, no thorns and is easy to prune. Your whole front fence will be covered in blue flowers. The flowers are used in Thai cooking, salads and also to make blue food colouring.

Maybe a good idea to go visiy BigC and Homepro, they have some nice plantings.
we have Ixora coccinea, which you can cut and prune at will, there are other plants in the same family that are yellow / have bigger flowers / grow higher than 120cm as ours does.
Ours really does look like this, and apart from weeding occasionally, I do nothing to it. Bougainvillea: I am about to give up on these, even if we buy in a pot full of flowers they don't seem to like our garden. Pruning is a regular job, especially when it is raining.

I may try that as I like the Latin Name , Clitoria ternatea

Best suggestion so far davureborn

A nice long hedge along the frontage may even keep the chicken scratching all the soil onto the road

How about Amorphophallus paoeniifolius if you want to be silly? Even botanists have a sense of humour. Flowered and died last week in our garden, otherwise known as elephant's foot yam.

I've read that it gives off a putrid smell, with the amount of plastic the Locals burn on a daily basis I think I may give that one a miss

Think you will find the local name for this is KEM.  Also attracts a lot of butterflies.  edit Pic did not transfer to post, I was referring to the orange flowered hedge.

Or maybe you should try Vulgaris Danglelerum.  buttslap
