Advice for a green horn
« on: October 28, 2014, 02:37:00 PM »
When I first came to Thailand on holiday I came with a friend who had just been through a bad divorce and he was still smarting from the harsh settlement . Both of us were green horns ,  we arrived in Pattaya and asked the Bangkok taxi driver to take us to a cheap hotel , we ended up at Palm Villa across from soi post office . Looking back we made many mistakes along the way and did a lot of silly things and lost a fair amount of money , then over the coming years we both ended up as permanent residents in the LOS .

I now see and some times get to meet other new to Thailand green horns and while chatting to them it soon becomes plainly obvious that they are making the same mistakes as I first made . They have now been seriously smitten by the '' hello sexy man '' syndrome and on returning home life for them is never ever the same again , and the burning desire to some how return to their now beloved Thailand consumes their every thought.

Some times when chatting to a green horn , I offer the following advice relating to getting involved with the opposite sex

1. Never talk about what you have or own back home or your financial situation .

2. Never splash money about even if you think Thailand's a cheap place and you can easily afford to .

3. Never exaggerate or make promises you don't intend to keep

What three snippets of advice would you offer a green horn ?  :)

My advise is :-

Why talk to that type of person. They will not believe you or change, so why bother in the first place, unless it for some type of self-gratification????

I don't think my advice would differ that much from that I would give in the UK. Trust your head and your gut. If alarm bells are ringing, and it doesn't seem right it probably isn't. Compared to Many of the posters here I am probably considers a Green Horn and I no doubt do some things that others wouldn't. However No Means No and I try to respect the Buddist beliefs but have made it clear that I will not be sucked into it personally and it won't be a blocker for things that need to get done.
