Our postman chooses not to deliver bills for months at a time. I wouldn't give parcels much chance, would you? Sending by EMS, if the guy is willing to deliver outside of Europe, can cost more than the contents.

You could get a post office box at Buriram post office.

Failing that, do you or your wife know any teachers that work at the local school? Get parcels sent for their attention at the school address. Will be delivered no problem.

Yes, we have a PO box in Lamplaimatt, THB300.- a year. But as I said above sending by EMS to the PO box is expensive, and theoretically the post office staff aren't allowed to sign for stuff.

We walked to the toy shop, maybe different management since you were there last. A load of plasic rubbish, meant for wholesale. Absolutely no board games. We walked on well past Paddy's bar, nada. Thanks anyway.

Did you go to the right place? It is nowhere near Paddy's Bar.

It has been run by the same family for decades.

I recently bought Thai monopoly there.

well apparently not. I went to the Bangkok Bank that I know (and use), walked towards 'railway station road ' and turned right. That brings you eventually to Paddy's Bar. I went to the one on this map, just south of 'Nivas Road' https://www.google.co.th/maps/search/bangkok+bank/@14.997331,103.106852,15z
Can we try again? Brat's birthday is tomorrow.

The shop is on Nivas Road. Nivas Road leads to the True shop in one direction and the railway station in the other. Quite a way and a few turns from Paddy's bar.

When turning right to the toy shop you would have seen a shop selling ice and, probably, a large stack of soda water crates.

I was reading these posts and it prompted me to go on line and see what chess sets are available in the UK. It seems you can no longer get sets like the old Spears Games type ( Folding board and plastic pieces all in a cardboard box) you can however get wooden boards and pieces for around £12. I will keep searching and if can find sets at a reasonable price and weight I will send over 2 or 3  sets with my things when I move over in September. (Mid to late Oct arrival)

No problem. I'm sure I will be able to find some reasonable sets somewhere. I quite like the idea of a couple of cold ones and a game or two. Haven't played for years.

I just found some sets on Amazon. Look to be like the spears boxed sets although not a lot of detail.  I have one on the way and if any good will send for a couple more. It's gonna be the folding board [ thick printed cardboard) and plastic moulded pieces I think but if like what I had when I was a kid perfectly playable. Is this what you had in mind or was better quality required.

Great stuff, so I don't have to do anything. I should just buy cheap stuff, if things get serious we can buy more expensive stuff later. I read that only 5000 Thais know European chess, and 2 million can play Maruk. Anyway, most of the concrete tables on sale have a chess board on top so that shouldn't be a problem. I would pay forone for sure.

Also, very easy and cheap to make a good strong chess board so as you say, if regular playing takes off then can just order some better quality pieces.

Good work. Let's wait until then and see if we can set up a Sunday morning try out somewhere. I'm sure you guys know places in Buriram that would be suitable.

Cooked, Jason, Davu,

My shipper has advised that my boxes from the uK should arrive in Bangkok on the 8th November and should be delivered to me no later than the 13th. So unless Thai customs have the desire to play chess and confiscate the 3 sets all should be good to arrange a get together. It has occurred to me that I haven't played for about 20 years so anticipate being bottom of the class.
